By now everyone knows the Droid X has an encrypted bootloader that is going to take a serious effort by the Android Developers to crack so we can load custom Rom's. What needs to be done is get Droid X phones into the hands of these developers so they can get to work. Pete(Bugless Beast) won the AllDroid contest so he has one and Birdman collected enough donations in just over a day to get a Droid X that he will have on 7/17. That's a start but I'd like for the Android community to pull together and lets get some donations to the developers, any amount helps $1, $2, $5 whatever the amount...skip the morning Dunkin Donuts, bagel, etc for one day and it will add up fast. I can continue to update this thread with new developers that can help us all by working on the Droid X as enough donations are collected so they can purchase their own phones. The developers create all the Roms, themes, etc for the rooting community to enjoy...lets make it a little easier for them to continue this development on all the new Android phones as they come to market.

I sent a few messages out to some developing teams and the first response back was from Cyanogen that the person he recommends is Koush. Once he has enough donations I can list another developer for us to donate to and help the rooting/unlocking cause.

Thanks to the Android community Koush should have a Droid X by Saturday to start hacking at that bootloader, I received numerous requests that a donation link be setup for ChevyNo1. I contacted Chevy to see if he was interested in helping hack the Droid X which he was. Here is a direct link for donations for him, you can check the link out over at his forums as well: http://ssandroid.com/

This is our chance, so lets start donating to ChevyNo1 for a Droid X, please put a note that the donation is for a DroidX: http://bit.ly/awetS5

If anyone would like to recommend a development team or developer let me know. Please spread the word, also you can let me know other Forums to post the same message.

Sounds like a lot of the hacking community agrees that this koush is pretty much a god-send. Another important piece of info is this: koush [apparently] never had a milestone or made attempts to help those guys out.

To me is sounds like this really could be our best shot right now at getting root and other hacking goodies. That said, I guess we're still waiting to hear from Birdman about the thing that was "really good news but he couldn't say".

I'm gonna throw koush a bit of money and I'd encourage you guys to consider doing the same. The worst that can come out of this is you don't get to have your Starbucks Chai Tea tomorrow.

just to update this, I think the birdman news was that the eFuse doesn't brick the device if it's tampered with.

Bump...I ordered a Droid X for Koush and it should be here by Wednesday (they only ship to the billing address), then I'll ship it out to Koush via USPS Priority and he should have it no later than Saturday. So I guess you can change all your threads to indicate that donations would be for motivation/appreciation of his work toward rooting the phone. I told him that if he gets this one all set (custom rom working), that I'll send a Droid2 his way since that's what I want to upgrade my Droid1 to...but i figure having a Droid X will make Droid 2 that much simpler to get going when it's available.

Great stuff Jon8RFC.

This just shows what a great community Android has and this forum has. Never witnessed this in the 2 years I was with the iPhone.

I'm gonna trust you and assume that you actually did this...
I can't even tell you how awesome that is. Thank you so much for doing this!

Negative, the X is readily available. When the EVOs were "sold out", I simply told my friend to hop on NewEgg, and she got it few days later. That's what I did for the X too, and it's actually just $579 retail, so that's a nice money-saver versus going to Best Buy or Verizon. So if you're itching to get one, the supplies are "limited" on NewEgg (whatever that means), so hop on it ASAP after you read this post! Select "replacement phone" on the right to get the retail price.
Welcome to our Wireless World

I sent Koush the tracking number that NewEgg sent me, and it says it will get to me on the 21st by 7pm. I'm going to hit up the main post office's 24-hour mailing center and ship it Priority Mail to him that night. Unless I get there by 5:30pm, it won't go out Wednesday night, but the latest it should get to him is Saturday since he's not in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere.

The Droid X is on its way to Koush! I went to send it Wednesday (it got to me well before 5:30pm), but my notary said that I couldn't get the NewEgg receipt notarized since she had no way of knowing whether it was genuine or not. So I had to re-word the "cellular phone relinquish form" I wrote to simply state that I was including the original.

To be clear: Koush did not request such a form--he's a pretty chill guy. I decided it was in his best interest as a developer to know that he truly had complete ownership of the phone and that I wouldn't change my mind at a later date and say "by the way, I decided I want the phone back"...so I wrote it up and went to my notary.

I would post the USPS delivery confirmation info (emailed it to Koush about 4 hours after I dropped it off) for y'all to see, but I'm not sure of the privacy policy USPS has and don't want Koush's privacy compromised. My receipt for the Priority Mailing says the expected delivery is Saturday, which is 2 days of the 2-3 days allotted for Priority Mail...hopefully it gets there Saturday, or else he will have to wait two extra days since it's the weekend :/

Anyway--it's on the way!

If anybody has any need for future use of such a form for a phone donation, you're welcome to use mine as a template. Of course, depending on whether or not you have it notarized (not entirely necessary), you can remove the second page and adjust the paragraph as necessary. You'd need to use an OATH that your state approves, though. I had to manually type the notary OATH form from a copy she gave to me yesterday because I wanted to have the footers (had to remove them before sharing to the 'net) on both pages for reference in page 1, and apparently I left one line out in the OATH, but she compensated for that since I was in a hurry...the main thing is page 1 anyway:
