Stuck to my guns. My Behold II replaced with Samsung Vibrant

Just wanted to chime in with some thoughts here. I'd purchased the Behold II just under two months ago. And yeah, I'd bought into that whole upgrade to 2.x crap thanks to sales reps and the oft removed/replaced/removed/replaced Samsung video.

It took a while, but with the awesome work of eugene, nu, and others here I had finally gotten the phone to function reasonably well (running the tweaked 1.6 release from here), save for a few dialer issues I still have (the occasional total lockup of the phone).

Still, the whole debacle about Behold II support did leave a bad taste in my mouth and I felt it a bit tiring that I (with tons of help from the community and a lot of reading) had to fix most of the issues myself by basically ditching everything remotely "Samsungy" about the phone. Also, the fact that this phone still had minor issues actually functioning as a phone was the last straw for me.

So I took matters into my own hands and began engaging in email and phone exchanges with T-Mobile corporate. After several weeks of emails, patience and a bit of phone tag, I have now gotten a firm commitment from T-Mobile to replace my Behold II with a new Samsung Vibrant free of charge. Mine is on it's way via UPS as we speak. I was led to believe that this was a joint decision by T-Mobile and Samsung as a resolution to extreme cases of dissatisfaction with the Behold II taken on a case-by-case basis. As to whether or not that is the actual truth, well that remains to be seen I suppose.

In my interactions with T-Mobiles Executive Customer Relations, I was very careful to be adult, professional, and to avoid inflammatory responses and behavior. The gentleman I interacted with conducted himself very professionally and was quite candid with me in regards to the rock-and-a-hard place T-Mobile sort of found themselves in with the Behold II. Still, despite trying to retain the high ground ethically and professionally at all times during my exchanges, I remained adamant with my dissatisfaction and left them with three options to resolve my complaint, making it clear that no other options would be considered. Replace my phone with a 2.1 sporting handset, release me from my contract and refund me, or watch me ignore T-Mobile's attempts to bill me until the cold death of the universe.

The nearly three decade long experience I have in the service industry both at the brick-and-mortar and corporate levels, as well as nearly 10 years worth of experience in tech industry press at least leads me to believe I've developed a very clear understanding of how to get satisfaction from service providers over the years. I've dealt with the best and worst customers in the world in my many years standing in this man's shoes, and I've learned valuable lessons from both sides of the coin. Maybe that's just my ego talking, and me having a dose of excellent luck and timing too. Hard to say for certain.

At any rate, I just wanted to share my experience here, and to offer a bit of advice. For those of you who are willing to invest the time, it might be worthwhile to take your arguments about the phone to the proper sources at this stage of the game. And be sure to utilize your anger and indignance as tools to focus your approach and demeanor, and not lose the high ground when trying to wheedle your way through this sort of situation. At the end of the day, the very nice gentleman (who I had significant disagreements with that took effort to overcome) at T-Mobile corporate I interacted with...is a human being. And human beings will generally take you more seriously when you take them seriously and treat them with respect regardless of what their job is.

I'm just glad my situation is resolved to my satisfaction.

Well it's not here yet. The phone was just released the 15th, and mine was shipped UPS Ground directly from their offices in Louisville Kentucky. I should have it sometime middle next week. I'll be sure to follow up with some impressions when I have it in my grubby little paws.

All the reviews I've read and watched indicate it's definitely way better than the Behold II, which is better than I expected to get from T-Mobile. 1ghz hummingbird cpu, 4" S-Amoled WVGA screen, 512mb ram, 16gb internal, 2gb microsd with that stupid Avatar movie on it (will be one of the first things to go lol). Touchwiz 3.0 seems smooth as glass and less intrusive than Touchwiz 2.0, but I'll likely revert to ADW.launcher unless the Samsung widgets captivate me.

And the phone has already been rooted lol. So no matter what people might end up thinking about the Vibrant, it's still a massive improvement over the Behold II. So long as it makes phone calls without locking up, and does everything the reviews suggest it does extremely well, I'll be content in all likelihood.

Yeah, I'd have to agree. And, if you think this through it'd probably be a bit inappropriate for you to expect T-Mobile to care about your E-Bay purchased phone.

I do hope some of you are able to achieve some level of appropriate redress from T-Mobile. The resolution to my situation took a great deal of legwork over nearly a month on my part, both in "selling" the reasons behind my satisfaction and in carefully researching some of the very specific flaws with the phones software. It's more compelling to give detailed evidence that, for instance, com.android.twsettings seemed to create sleep issues and some force closes and lockups with the phone when bypassing the Touchwiz launcher, than merely saying "this phone sux0rz!".

Just an example, and a poorly explained and still possibly an anecdotal one at that, but getting a resolution to an issue is as much (if not more) about how you describe it than it is about what the issues themselves may be.

Still, at the end of the day it's entirely likely that I just got lucky and hit the right moment with the right complaints. I'm just glad my situation is being resolved. I wish the rest of you the best of luck!

Well I have no leverage seeing as I won this and selling it would be pointless i mean what is this worth now like $120 since the vibrant released?

$106 on gazelle.com

As a side note to anyone looking to do the gazelle thing I will confirm what I told everyone over a month ago, although you are paid on a walmart card you can spend it anywhere visa is accepted.

I spent about $70 of the $126 I got for mine last month at the liquor store............. I can't wait for the $147 from my Cliq to get drunk again. Thanks for the free booze Tmo! :D

Lol unfortunately my back up phone is kinda crappy now (motozine) so most likely I will be keeping it since I originally won it and being that it was my first android phone and that its not worth to sell for only 100 I would at least be content with $150 but thats still low priced.

Put it on Craigs List for a couple of weeks, if you don't get any bites, just go directly through Gazelle.com. By doing that, you aren't limiting yourself to a gift card. They can either send you money via PayPal or check.

lol No shot man...no way no how

Heh, I didn't think so.
Man, I wish I'd looked a bit more into phones before I went with the BH2... I was kinda desperate to get a new phone, and I liked what I saw with the behold, but after ordering it, and digging deeper on these forums, I realized I made a mistake, and should have spent the extra $100 for a Vibrant.. :(
Oh well, live and learn..

Its not a gift card. It is a prepaid debit card that can be used anywhere visa is accepted. Read above lol.

I, obviously, cannot use the Upgrade for the B2 => Vibrant. I think we ALL know this.

However, I COULD

A: Use the second phone on my account (the one I gave to my mother for emergencies) as an upgrade... There's NO way should could EVER POSSIBLY understand how to use a Smart Phone ;->

B: Do as above and "convince" T-Mobile to send me the Vibrant

C: Get it through work (They always end up with my "cast off" phones anyway, and semi-subsidize my personal phones, and as they're on T-Mobile, the Razr V3 they have is MORE than able to use the Upgrade)

D: Just wait until there's a REALLY GOOD reason to upgrade (Hardware 3D, 2Ghz processors, HTC 1 stops being a prototype....)

So far, I'm sticking with D. The B2 is flawed, but it's hardly "unusable".

If you are on the fence about the vibrant do yourself a favor and wait...there are at least two better androids set for launch on tmo before the end of the year. One possibly as early as late September so you won't need to wait long.

If rumours of the Vanguard being the HTC Vision are true then nothing but it being HSPA+ and having a slide out qwerty makes it better than the vibrant. HTC Vision was rumoured to be 3.7inch HSPA+ with the same old snapdragon processor that got beat and it won't have android 3.0 more likely 2.2 or 2.1.

I can't wait to see it however if it proves rumours wrong.

My word of advice get the Vibrant off contract and save your upgrade for November. There will be 4 new Android devices hopefully worth upgrading to according to this map.

Yup that would be the rumour... HTC Emerald slated for November. weird that its saying its going to have Android 2.1 when around that time Android 3.0 should be arriving.... Devices in november should at least be released with Android 2.2

Did that say Super Amoled? Interesting... Hopefully not too many catch onto Super AMOLED otherwise I see another AMOLED shortage debacle in the midst.

I am calling that article a fluke right now because now device should be releasing in november with Android 2.1 unless android 3.0 release isn't slated till early next year...

Well, just updating the state of things here. I received my Samsung Vibrant from T-Mobile today. Taking away everything that is way better than the behold ii (bigger screen, 1ghz cpu), it's what Touchwiz and the Behold II should have been.

Having said that, I'll likely be rooting the phone, installing Modaco's custom rom, and running ADW.Launcher. Gonna give Touchwiz 3.0 and the Samsung social widgets a go for a few days before I decide.

And yes, it's already rooted. And yes MoDaCo already has a custom rom available that at least allows some customization, wifi tether, and removal of stock apps. And yes, Cyanogen now has a team member assigned to porting CM6 to the Vibrant/Galaxy S. So if you're thinking that the Vibrant is a potential repeat of the Behold II in the support dept, it's probably going to be orders of magnitude better in that regard.

I've installed all my usual favorite apps, tons of mp3's and video, and it's been great so far. It came with a half charge, so I spent the better part of the day (about 6 hours) draining the battery. It's on charger now, so let's hope battery life ends up being ok. It's already way better than the Behold II was for me with a ton of tweaks battery-life wise.

At the end of the day, T-Mobile did the right thing for me and though it took significant effort on my part I am now satisfied.

I'll leave off by giving a bit shout out to all you guys. This was a very helpful place and brought me up to speed on Android in general, and the Behold II specifically, in record time. So some of the credit for my success with my complaints definitely goes to you guys!

My hats off. Best of luck to you all!
