I'm looking for a good notepad/memo application that a) can sync between Hero and computer (i.e. doesn't have to sync to the internet, although if that's an option too that's OK) b) I can somehow get all my notes from Outlook in there (so I guess it should be .csv compatible?) and c) privacy option (password protection) - like the good old Palm Treo - you can mark it private, and it gets hidden, and only shows up if you type in the password. Palm users will know what I mean.
Is there such an app out there?
Thank you

Hmm...

Well, there are a few options...

You're asking for a lot of functionality in your post, so the most powerful option with the longest history for you to explore is the famous Evernote program/app/website/etc.

Evernote has been around a bit, and is a really powerful, elegant, and fancy system that probably has ALL the different options and functionality you're asking for.

One nice thing about both Evernote (and also 3banana, see below) is that it allows you to put ALL kinds of media into a note, not just text. Photos, audio, etc. can all be part of a note and shared across computers, phones, websites, etc. from your Evernote account. There are both free and paid versions....check out the video demo they have:

https://www.evernote.com/about/download/android.php

I personally use the "3banana" note app for Android, which synchs with the "Synaptic" website. I don't think it exports to Outlook or CSV formats, though. Like Evernote, it allows you to take notes that include some different media, not just text:

I also use the Astrid "to do list" app, which would also works pretty well for taking notes -- not just tasks. It can synch with a site called "Remember The Milk." Logging into the RTM website allows you to export tasks (or "notes" if you call them that) to iCal format, which you can also import into Outlook if you want. Another nice thing about the Astrid/RTM combination is that you can add a pane for it into your Gmail account online (it's in the Gmail "labs" list) and see your to do list (aka "notes"?) when you log in to gmail on your computer:

Astrid - Android?s Simple Task Recording Dashboard

Does this help??

OK all, if you read her original post she needs something that she can use offline, incase her internet is down, or phone does not have good signal because of where she is located, reason why I am posting here is because I told her to post a thread to ask for advice, and I am on the PC more that she is so I am able to monitor for her a little more for now

Has she even tried using it? If you are looking for us to test it out then you are going to wait awhile. Install it and see if it will work for her needs.

No, she is getting the phone today, she is not asking for peeps to try, just asking peeps that have installed anything of the sort to post info here so she can take a look at the options and test the programs out

I really appreciate the responses - I have heard a lot about EverNote, and it seems everyone loves it except those who need to be able to access it without the internet. Where I live at home, I get very poor reception so I need to be able to get to my notes without a signal - that's why I am asking. I just got my Hero phone, and my head is spinning - I need to get my head around it first and figure out how to use it and then I will try EverNote - in fact, I can't wait to try it - again, thank you so much! What a great forum, to be able to ask advice and get help. :) THANK YOU!

Well...Android phones have a BIT of a learning curve...so keep messing with it, try everything, press on everything, and you'll pick it up.

Also, if you do a search in the Market, you'll see a few more notes programs. Most are not as functional as the ones we listed. There is one called "Easy Note + 2Do" which integrates with GDoc, which I notice somebody posted about here as well. Looks like it combines notes with a To Do list, which is actually pretty neat. I may try it myself and see if I like it better than the Astrid/3banana combination I'm currently using.

Am pretty new to smartphones and the Hero myself so I can really relate to how it makes your head spin! Have been looking into "note making" apps and ran across one not yet mentioned: NoteEverything (URL below)

Have just begun playing with it but I like the UI and amount of control it offers. Looks to have similar features as EverNote, and supports OutLook and Palm created notes.

After looking at ALL the apps out there for memo, notepad etc., and coming from the Palm Treo world where they had the GREATEST system available - I have finally found one that I love. It's called B-Folders - and this is why I like it.
a) you can make/amend/delete your notes on your computer, just like you can with Palm and the desktop manager, and then when you sync, all your notes go to your Hero.
b) you can make/amend/delete your notes on your Hero and when you sync, everything syncs nicely with your Hero
c) it's securely password protected
d) you can sync using different methods - up until now, I was unhappy because the only method I was able to use was through wifi, and I DESPERATELY wanted to be able to sync just using my Hero USB cable, attached to my computer. The wifi sync was really easy and quick - but that wasn't the point. With my Palm, I could plug it in to my computer, press a button, and everything synced. THat's what I really wanted.
e) THEY (Jointlogic) HAVE UPDATED IT like they said they would - NOW YOU CAN NOW SYNC WITH USB CABLE! So now I can connect Hero to Laptop, and sync it directly without going out through wifi. I tested it last night and it works great. Thank you Jointlogic for doing what you said you would, when you said you would.
f) Customer service - I gotta say that they are second to none. Any time I've had a question they're responded within a couple of hours. I'm impressed.
g) It is free to use on your Htc Hero. Down side is: if you want all these other capabilities, to use it on your computer and your Hero and have everything sync, then you'll do like I did and after the 30 day trial period, end up paying almost $30 for the full version. I hate hate hate paying for software - I thought this was expensive to be honest - and I usually work with what's free out there - but NONE of the other apps had what this has - password protected, the ability to sync, the ability to work ON your laptop and make notes OR work on your HERO and make notes and then make them all sync - so I figured, what the heck. If you don't want all these capabilities, B-Folders IS free to just use on your Htc HERO, but if you want to sync it to your laptop etc., then you'll have to pay for it.
g) It's NOT only for notes and things - you can add contacts too plus a host of other things.
It can be found at B-Folders for Android

I also use Astrid, which is a good To Do/List app, but I wanted something similar to how I used my Palm Treo, when I could open the desk top manager, type in notes and memos and then sync those across to my phone. B-Folders does all that and more. Apart from the price, I give it two thumbs up and say it's the best syncing/memo/notes/secure app out there.

Evernote does have a windows app that does sync. With that you only need internet access to sync notes, now I never used it so not sure how it works.

Lately I have been using Springpad which has a great Android app. AND in their Android app you can set a PIN so noone can get into the app without it. Now they say they are working on an API and a Desktop version so it can be used without the internet, but who knows how far out that is.

i just checked out b-folders b/c i want the same thing: a notes app to sync directly to my desktop via usb cable or bluetooth, NOT over the cloud. they are currently having a sale until 12/31/10 on their desktop app to bring it down to $20, which imho i still at least $18 too much. i heard springpad is rumored to bust out a desktop app to sync w/its notes app. does anyone know 1) if it's true 2) if it'll most likely be paid or free? any other ideas? thanks!

Springpad is a cloud based service, so not quite what you are looking for. So any syncing would be in the cloud, not straight to desktop. As far as a desktop client to go with their cloud based service - that would be a no: Create an offline destop version of Springpad. Katin, one of Springpads employees, says "Hey guys, just wanted to give an update. We do not currently have a plan for an offline, desktop app."

My understanding of now Evernote works on Android is you can write notes offline and they will be uploaded when you have a data connection. However, there is currently no ability to read notes unless you are connected to data.

That may have been an older version, but the version I have now has the option to select which notebooks are saved locally (must be a premium user). These of course can be sync'd as well. What's so amazing about this product was I've been trying to find a way to sync my old Outlook 2007 Notes. Now all I do is select the Outlook notes and send them to the Evernote Notebook that I created and Voila! Now my notes are on my PC, Android and my laptop. Awesome product! :)

You are right. A couple releases ago the EN Android app enabled offline notes for premium users. Their android app does keep getting better with each release.
