Verizon going to tiered plans sooner than we think?

Question - whenever they actually do this, will it apply to new contracts only? If they try to do that to an existing contract, isn't that a material change that allows one to cancel the remainder of the contract without any termination fee?

I'm pretty sure they can't change any current contracts at all. If you sign a new contract it will probably change things i.e. if you want to use your NE2 discount you might be forced to use one of the new data plans.

It would just be new contracts. But if they tried to impose such limits on currently existing contracts they would break the terms of the contract, and we would be able to cancel the contract. I don't think Vz is very eager to break their contracts with their customers though. God knows they work hard enough to get us stuck in those contracts for years d:

The archos 5 may start looking better, I can live without the data plan, there are plenty of open wifi spots everywhere, may just have to go back to a dumb phone.

I'm obviously not a heavy data user (looked back at my history & so far, .8Gb is max in one month).
I figure there are some things I can do without using data (transfer audible.com & mp3 files via USB from PC).
So I'll just be keeping an eye on things & hope my Droid lasts a long time so I don't have to confront upgrading a phone.

Well you could just use your Droid to go on wifi and instead of switching to a dumbphone just alter your contract to not include a data plan. (This would be after your current contract ends of course) Just to make sure you don't use any data you could turn off data on the Droid (can only do this on froyo I think). I don't see any reason to go back to a dumbphone when you can keep the droid and drop the data. Unless you are just switching to a dumbphone on principal (=

I was on AT&T for years, actually since way back when they were SNET Wireless and then Cingular. When my contract ended, the plans had changed. For instance I had a 800 minute planb and when it was time to upgrade my phone and renew my contract, that plan no longer existed but since that was the plan I signe dup for at the beginning I was able to keep it. I have only been with Verizon since December so I dont know how they work it when it comes to that. I dont think they can force you to change plans

I know I'm in the minority here, but I actuall like the idea of tiered data plans if it means I can save some money. And, to be completely frank, if you use lots of data you SHOULD have to pay more than someone who uses considerably less. I use my phone a lot. Tons of browsing, YouTube, ROM Manager, Pandora, LastFM, etc. but most of that is done over WiFi (because where I live 3G can sometimes be spotty and WiFi is just faster). As a result, I barely ever use over 1GB. My plan includes four phones (two are Droids), meaning I pay well over $200 each month to Verizon. If a tiered plan means I can save some money each month, I'm all for it.

Thats the issue now, I can't easily turn off off data currently.

I predicted Verizon would too, as soon as AT&T announced they were, I knew Verizon and others would follow. Its called Collusion, when the execs from all the big companies get together and take turns implementing new ways to screw the customers and make more $. Verizon took the heat for being first to raise the ETF so AT&T took the heat for being first to drop unlimited plans. Notice how each time the others followed and it was just a few months in between.

I am probably one of the few people that hope they go to tiered plans.

I consistently use between 500mb-700mb a month.

The reason tiered plans sounds good to me, is because I hope that they offer a <1gb plan that is much cheaper than what I am paying now. With that said, if the <1gb plan is the same cost as the unlimited plan that we have now, then that will be stupid...

you know it will be that they will pick a series of options that leave most of us just outside finding the lower plan useful. For example, ATT is like 200mb.. who uses 200mb? So, you have to go with the full pop plan in the end anyway.

So, I, like you, use around 700mb but I am sure they will pick plan cut offs that make unlimited the only way for most of us to go as 200-300 is just to little.

But fellow Amercans.....this is EXACTLY what capitalism is all about!! And if you don't love it...well then, you are a SOCIALIST/Democrat/liberal/Nazi/Big government kinda person, and Sistah Sara and Rush and Beck don't want you here.
So skeedadle with your pinko thoughts, and pay, and pay, and pay, and pay.......... of course, unless the deregulation of big corporations and the resultant collapse of our economy has left you jobless. Well then, you just need to go take on of them there fine minimum wage jobs.

signed: a proud Democrat :D
