Question - whenever they actually do this, will it apply to new contracts only? If they try to do that to an existing contract, isn't that a material change that allows one to cancel the remainder of the contract without any termination fee?

The archos 5 may start looking better, I can live without the data plan, there are plenty of open wifi spots everywhere, may just have to go back to a dumb phone.
we all will be fine its just for new customers

It doesn't help that Droid X users are eating up data 5x faster than any other users...
Motorola Droid X Users Eat 5X Data Than Any Other Smartphone On Verizon
Thats the issue now, I can't easily turn off off data currently.Well you could just use your Droid to go on wifi and instead of switching to a dumbphone just alter your contract to not include a data plan. (This would be after your current contract ends of course) Just to make sure you don't use any data you could turn off data on the Droid (can only do this on froyo I think). I don't see any reason to go back to a dumbphone when you can keep the droid and drop the data. Unless you are just switching to a dumbphone on principal (=
I am probably one of the few people that hope they go to tiered plans.
I consistently use between 500mb-700mb a month.
The reason tiered plans sounds good to me, is because I hope that they offer a <1gb plan that is much cheaper than what I am paying now. With that said, if the <1gb plan is the same cost as the unlimited plan that we have now, then that will be stupid...
I predicted Verizon would too, as soon as AT&T announced they were, I knew Verizon and others would follow. Its called Collusion, when the execs from all the big companies get together and take turns implementing new ways to screw the customers and make more $. Verizon took the heat for being first to raise the ETF so AT&T took the heat for being first to drop unlimited plans. Notice how each time the others followed and it was just a few months in between.
