...And people ARE born with racist thoughts...
Really? care to offer any proof of this claim? Ever seen a new born stare into a mirror IOWA? It's weeks/months before they can even comprehend that the image they see is themselves, so to suggest that they could be forming racist thoughts, while unaware of their own race, or have any concept of race is frankly ludicrous.

...Act like the Romans or get out...
I think you mean almost the exact opposite of what you seem to be suggesting; unless you really want them veni, vidi, vici. Which doesn't seem to match the rest of your post's tone.

@mpw, what's with the literal interpretation?

iowa wasn't suggesting that a baby is thinking of anything, but that it's in the human (applies to all animals of course) nature to be xenophobic, and it's true

and "when in rome, act like the romans" is an old saying, meaning when you're visiting some place, you should respect the customs of that place - you must have heard it before

Maybe that's what he did mean, but if I wanted a reader to interpret my words, rather than take them at face value I wouldn't stress the parts that make it seem like I'm talking in absolute terms, like he did with 'ARE', and then follow this with a sentence suggesting something slightly different; I think there is a difference between instinctive fear, and learned racism.

I remain to see any compelling evidence to suggest that racism is instinctive rather than learned behavior.

I have heard the saying, and I'm well aware of what it means, but that's not the saying Crude used; which was the point of my post.

From the forum ReadMe:

remember that you are not debating someone else's intelligence (or lack thereof), background or location, but rather the topic itself and their position on the topic. For best results try to back up your assertions with some sort of evidence, and also be prepared to have others find evidence against your assertions and shoot holes in what you have said.

Personal attacks will just get threads closed or worse, so avoid attacking the messenger and stick to attacking the message.

fair enough - i thought it was perfectly clear what he meant, but i guess i can see how someone could misinterpret it

I think there is a difference between instinctive fear, and learned racism.
of course, but the point is, both exist - like iowa said, the learned behaviour from bad parenting/influence just makes it 10 times worse

are you being serious now? he didn't say the "when in rome" part so you assume he wants everyone who comes to the states to literally "act like the romans"?

For the record IOWA, don't flatter yourself that any of my replies to your posts are part of a personal grudge. And while you claim to have 'called me' on my BS, just remember that I've been willing to back up my views everytime, it's you that has ignored my requests to back up your lies in the past. I can do without you abusive Private Messages too, so don't bother sending any more.

And time and time again, I've asked you to post *just one*, of these supposed "lies". Seems to me someone is lying about lying. If you have beef with me, take it to PM. No need to litter the board with your pointless/fact-less posts due to some grudge you may or may not have. And just to throw this in, I guess you mean your backing your posts because "you said so" should be good enough for everyone.

EDIT:

It's natural to fear the unknown(different).

Animals and Humans seek predictable circumstances. Then they can be comfortable and relax.

When something enters that is unknown, our brains secrete adrenaline, dopamines and a host of other enzymes and we're in the fight or flight mode.

That is, until we determine what it is and how we can deal with it.

They key word is... CONTROL.

Though we are not be able to control everything, we try to control what we're exposed to. No surprises. Predictablility of everything around us.

When we can't do that, we get comfortably numb with self medication so that we just don't give a damn what happens.

Actually my original comment on this was intended to be quite light-heartedly pointing out that what he said could be read as the opposite of what I believed he'd intended to say. And you ask what I assume, when I've already made it clear what my assumption was; I thought somebody with such great comprehension wouldn't need to ask for further clarification:rolleyes:

And when I have, you ignore it, so what's the point?

...Seems to me someone is lying about lying...
You've accused me of this before IOWA, and I've asked you to offer actual proof, you've failed. You keep coming back with the same pathetic arguments and false accusations, accusation I can and have aimed directly back at you and offered examples(where you haven't/can't)

...If you have beef with me, take it to PM. No need to litter the board with your pointless/fact-less posts due to some grudge you may or may not have....
I have no inherent grudge against you IOWA, as I've already said, just against the lies and accusations you keep making.

Again as I've said before I have no interest in taking it to PM, and would appreciate if you wouldn't bother PMing me again with your private abuse and further lies.

Might I point out that it is you that again has re-started the same old pointless posting of accusations and lies, not I.

...I guess you mean your backing your posts because "you said so" should be good enough for everyone....
Again with old accusations IOWA, and you must be aware you don't need to guess, as I've already answered this particular accusation before, and shown how your guess was wrong.

...That is, until we determine what it is and how we can deal with it...
With regards to your edit IOWA, you're talking about instinctive reactions to the fear of the unknown. I accept that most humans and animals will act on these instincts, but these are not racist thoughts.

Racism is a belief, not an instinct.

And the fact is, in today's day and age, the WHITE male is the one that's most discriminated upon, in America.

Oh, really? Do you have some legitimate proof of that? And by proof, I don't mean some b.s. from a right-wing site.

And people ARE born with racist thoughts, unfortunately.

Do you have some proof that people are born with racist thoughts? I'd like to see it.

Every school I ever attended was integrated. I grew up in a city that houses a major university that attracted faculty from all over the world.
As a result, from the time I was toddling around, I saw people of every color, stripe, variety, background, gender, religion. I've never thought that the "white race" (of which I am a member) was better than any other race.

The most obvious, blatant racism I have personally seen lately was during my walk-bys of two Tea Party rallies in Washington, D.C. The crowds were full of ugly people carrying ugly signs and saying ugly things.

which leads me to think you either genuinely didn't get it, or were arguing over semantics for your own amusement (aka. trolling) on purpose

Racism is a belief, not an instinct.
The instinctual tendency to distrust the unfamiliar isn't racism.
the way i see it, racism is a belief built on that instinct
without the instinctual tendency to distrust the unfamiliar there would be significantly less racism

of course at this point in time, much racism is caused by each race's respective histories - histories, which would be vastly different if that instinct didn't exist

I don't think the race issue will ever go away completely. It is deeply ingrained in some peoples way of thinking and then that way of thinking is passed down from generation to generation. As a Black man I truly believe its impossible for another race to fully understand how Black people feel about it. Its very easy to say, it was 200 years ago get over it, but the fact is racist things happen everyday which make it hard for some Black people to get over it. A Black person can walk through Howard Beach in NY right now and be called a nigg*r so you can't say "it was 200 years ago." There are a lot of times reading various forums and a Black person pulls the race card and i think "Get over it, this has nothing to do with race." But at the same time a part of me understands because I don't know exactly what that person has experienced to make them feel the way they do.

I think for us to truly move past racism is to not pass our way of thinking on to our kids. Kids are not born with racist thoughts. Of course they see a difference in color and may be curious about it, but they don't feel that one race is superior to another until someone teaches them that.

I agree with you dakidobf, I think it is up to the parents rasing kids today to nip it in the bud. One thing that always annoys me, though is some of my friends who are black, will refer to each other with the n word We all need to stop using derogatory terms to refer to each other. I dont know if rap music is the main culprit, or what. I know that rap is the only mainstream form of music I am embarrassed to listen to in public because of its vulgarity, i don't hink it is any worse than it was back in the 1990s when Iwasn't ashamed and didn't care what people heard coming from my car. but now that I am older I am beginning to think it is helping with the continuation of racism. But back to my main point it is up to the parents to teach our kids, every generation, I feel, is lessening the racial lines, and if we as current parents teach what is right and practice what we preach things will be better.

Well if wasn't obvious I guess I should use a smilie for those who don't have a sense of humour the same as mine; my bad.

...which leads me to think you either genuinely didn't get it, or were arguing over semantics for your own amusement (aka. trolling) on purpose...
Well as I've already explained that I did get it, for you to choose to think I genuinely didn't get it is basically you accusing me of lying; don't worry I get that a lot from people who don't bother to/or can't comprehend what I've posted.

And as for arguing for my own amusement, it seems to me that it's you that started the argument; what do you expect, that I would defer to you obvious superiority (despite the fact that there seems to more a deficiency in you comprehension) and apologise for trying to get clarity from another's post?

So I'm going to say I'm neither liar OR troll, but thanks for the accusations all the same.

...the way i see it, racism is a belief built on that instinct.
Seems like a very weak argument to me, if you watch very small children play together they rarely even notice the different races, and play happily, yet racist attitudes can be formed later in those same children, after they understand the concept of right and wrong, which suggests to me it's a learned beliefs, not instinctive at all.

i'll say that your choice if smiley faces is quite annoying and just by your posting of an image that large alone I'll say your being quite annoying and troll ish...
I didn't realise it'd be quite so big I admit, but I didn't think the stock one was obvious enough for some people.... and wasn't it you with the large ***** a few posts back?;)

And as the accusations of trolling started before that smilie I assume that seeking clarity from others, answering question asked of me, and refuting false claims and lies about myself made by other must be deemed by some as trolling

Your comments stating the stock one wasn't quite obvious enough for some people and then your posting and leaving an image that was easily 4x larger than my already quite large image shows how pretentious you were and continue trying to be ;)

You say you aren't being a troll but there was no subtlety to your accusations about what other people might or might not get. IMO that kind of shows a little arrogance on your part eh?

Now, you're just being evasive!

Mwahahaha! OK, I'll stop.

That's what he always tries to do. We ask for proof of anything, "Oh, I did already." Umm, I guess there must be a secret section on the forum only for mpw, because NO-ONE else can see them. That's classic troll behavior, misdirection. Something he doesn't like? Change the subject.

Ask for proof? "Oh, I posted it already". No you didn't, and what your typing, isn't the truth. The fact that you have nothing better to do than fabricate lies about lies, mpw, is sad.

and 3devious, mamist? o_O Does that exist o.o

To the rest of the thread:

As human beings (and any animal in nature really), it is normal to fear what is different. Fear drives humans. It's classic nature vs nurture. We seek situation in which we can control. You want an example of this? Walk around in a ghetto for about an hour with no protection, during nice weather, and see how you feel.
