Is this true about Android?

I heard that Google backups up your settings and configuration on your phone to the cloud so that if you replace your phone and get another Android phone that as soon as you log into it your new phone will have the same settings as your old one. It doesn't seem believable to me. I know Google keeps track of what apps you've purchased, but I can't believe that they keep track of your free apps and all of the settings of each app. Am I wrong here?

Dang it. I just realized I'm in the wrong forum. Please move or delete. Apologies to all.

Partially wrong, yes.

It will automatically back up your Google contacts and calendar, so that will automatically synced to a new phone.

Apps, on the other hand, are a mixed bag. It will remember which apps you've bought, but you'll have to download them again (for free) It doesn't remember your settings though.

Free apps. It seems to remember some and not others. Generally, you can back up free appps with a backup app and restore them pretty quickly anyway.

So far, every time I've flashed a new rom, the apps I install from the market will automagically download to the new system. Might take a while(about 30 minutes), and don't go to the market until they do, or they won't.

I haven't seen any backup apps that work without root

You do not need root to back up free apps. Only copy prtected paid ones.

That's interesting. When I flashed to my current rom I went to the market to redownload some stuff, and several of the apps had 'Automatic' next to them. I wondered what that was.
