Im wondering, has anyone figured out if the X will prioritize using WIFI for data usage instead of 3G if it is available? Will WIFI show up on my plan as data usage?

As far as I know, the phone will use WiFi instead of 3G if WiFi is available and connected. Looks like it's using WiFi instead of 3G for data on my X.
WiFi usage will not show up on Verizon, only data used on the cell network (3G)

Do you have to have wifi on constantly for this to work? If so will that eat up a ton of battery?

I have been searching for an app that will turn on wifi when I get to work or to my house, but turn it off and 3g back on when I am anywhere else. Anyone know of any apps that will do this? I don't want wifi on and searching (and wasting battery life) when I am out driving or at a place I know doesn't have wifi

Having the wifi turned on will drain the battery since it's looking for a network. Wifi does take precedence over 3G also.

Long press on the home screen, select widgets, then power control. There is a wifi switch in that widget.

Tasker or locale will do this, and do it automatically so you don't have to press any buttons, but you have to set it up.

You could have it turn on wifi during certain hours then back off again, or have it turn on wifi only in certain locations (determined by GPS), and many other variables.

I set up tasker to turn off bluetooth when I'm in range of my wifi at work during work hours, because bluetooth wastes battery and unless I'm in my car I don't use it.

EDIT: From my testing I've also found that setting wifi to "never sleep" actually uses less battery than having it sleep when the screen is off

Do you have to change a setting to make Droid X access the internet via wifi instead of through the cellular connection? I have very poor cellular signal strength (0-1 bar) in my house, and full signal strength from the WLAN. My phone is obviously trying to access the internet through the cellular connection, because webpages continuously time out despite the great wifi signal (not a problem with the WLAN, as other computers on the network have perfect internet access).

My wifi and 3G signal seem to cooperate pretty well. While I'm home, my wifi is on automatically and as soon as I get out of range, it switches to 3G, switches back to wife when I enter my house. It will also notify me if there are wifi networks in the area but it's up to me to connect.

My only complaint is that I cannot get my Droid X to connect to my wireless N network; only wireless G!

Does anyone know if 2.2 will fix this?

Maybe it's just me but that's got to be the best Freudian slip I've seen all day!!! :D :D

The leaked version does not fix this for mine. Its to a point where I use my laptop for everything on N and go change my router settings when I MAY want to use G speeds and to update my apps.
Sad that I can't figure out how to use what I paid for.

Motorola's own forum has 10+ pages talking about this with no acknowledgment or answers

I had resolved my wifi issues the first week I had my X, except for one...

I turn off the wifi whenever I leave my house to save battery. When I get back in the driveway, I turn it back on. It wouldn't automatically reconnect to my wifi unless I went under wifi settings. I didn't have to do anything, just going into that menu made it reconnect to the wifi.

Once I installed the leaked Froyo, it now automatically reconnects to my wifi once I toggle it back on.

I can connect to my Wireless N network on both 2.1 and 2.2 and don't have any stability problems. It connects at 150mbps.

I am using WPA2 with AES encryption. I have read reports that the DX has trouble with TKIP encryption - you could try changing that and see if it solves the problem.

I am on 2.1 right now, and it behaves perfectly and reconnects to Wifi when I'm in range of an appropriate network.
