Root Return/not??

Ok, I have a question for you guys.

I have had my Droid since...eh, maybe around February of this year. I have had to replace it about 3 times (doesn't bother me, as long as my replacement works). The other times I have replaced it were due to my messaging app FC on me (pre root) and the last time was after root and I had dust under the screen and I complained enough and mad the VZW rep mad and that made me call the warranty office and complain and I got a refurb.

ANYWAY, here's my question. Should I return my Droid for a refurb? I have been running BB v0.4 for about 3 days now and was running Kangerade 5.0.9 for about 1 week prior and I think SS v4.4 for about 2 weeks prior to Kangerade. ALL of those ROMs, and I still had a problem with my messaging app FC on me. I mean, it's not a CRAZY big deal, but it gets annoying as hell for it happens about twice a day now.

Also, I have not got a shit ton of dust under my screen....NO clue how this ALWAYS happens to me. My friend has a Droid and doesn't have a spec...wtf?Every single one of my Droids get dust under the screen. I now have an Otterbox case, and that seems to have stopped the dust getting in. Oh, and the plastic on the back of the screen (the thread that was terribly long, about to or not to take off that thing) has started peeling making the sliding of the screen somewhat difficult and not smooth.

The only reason I'm asking this I guess is to make sure I'm not being too...dramatic? I have wiped D&C MANY times and nothing seems to work. I've used Handcent in the past to no avail either.

I plan on just calling the warranty center first, not even bothering with the store. I'll tell them (and this is true...that's the sad thing) that the store will tell me this: You just need to factory reset your phone and it will be fixed. That's what they did last time and it didn't work, obviously. Then they said they wouldn't replace it until I could SHOW them the FC...shit, it's RANDOM! I can't reproduce that! I'll say that the store won't give me a new/refurb one because they never have and I already know the problem, so send me another one...please.

Also, I know unrooting is possible, but is it...dangerous? I've been to the Unlockr site and read through the unrooting process which doesn't seem hard but I saw a guy say you should just flash to stock 2.0.1 without root then do the OTA. Well, I can't seem to find the 2.0.1 file...

Sorry for this long ass post that will probably get me bitched at because it's a dumb question. Thanks though for those who DO answer! Any thoughts on this will be greatly appreciated.

Do you use a task killer? Does it auto kill tasks?

Also, I am of the opinion that the piece of plastic on the back of the screen is supposed to be removed. It looks just like any of the other bits of plastic on there to protect it while shipping. Some people have said that taking it off has made their screen slide open too easily, like when the phone is just sitting in their pocket. I've had my Droid since release last November and took the plastic off immediately and the screen still has a very nice amount of resistance to opening but your results may differ.

I think what intrigues me the most about this thread is that the fact that you actually use the stock messager app :p

I think the FC's must be caused by a software conflict (like a task killer as suggested above). I have a hard time seeing how it could be a hardware issues especially over a few different droids, and only affecting on app. It's possible but seems more likely that there is a software issue.

the nice thing about root is that you put the power (or at least ability) to fix software issues in your own hands.

I'm assuming when you flash different ROMS you are restoring apps via Titanium Backup (or letting the market do it for you). I would back everything up and do a wipe, and fresh stock ROM install. before you restore any apps does the problem still happen? if not add your apps back a few at a time until the problem resurfaces. Helping you narrow down the offending app or service

also yes I'm positive that the plastic under the screen is supposed to be removed, like the plastic that comes on the screen when you unbox it.

Easy way to tell if its a 3rd party app causing a conflict..... boot into safe mode. run your droid like that for a couple days and see if it FC or not. If not, start looking at your other apps for the issue.
Have you tried Handcent or Chomp? Do they FC as well?

I unrooted my phone the other day to let the Mrs practice rooting before her phone got in. Wasn't hard at all but I did notice that the info in the "Phone Info" section didn't match an actual stock DROID, I think the Kernel actually said the word Test at the end (WTF?). So if you can go down to 2.0.1 then do the upgrade OTA that would be the best to ensure that all the version #s and such actually line up with a stock droid.
Also, don't remove the plastic under the screen. Its meant to stay there (Ok I don't know that but I like to start arguments and this one is perfect LOL)

LOL. There's really no harm in leaving it on in most cases. I think it's unlikely it's supposed to be there but people even got conflicting information from Motorola themselves. I can't imagine they would design the phone so that part of the sliding mechanism of the screen relied on a plastic sticker.

In the case of the OP if it's already starting to come off by itself and is interfering with the sliding of the screen, I would just finish the job and peel it off.

Thanks guys, really! No, I HATE task killers and have only used them once; uninstalled same day. I guess I'll go ahead and take that plastic off lol. And i'll try the safe mode option SinfulDragon, thanks!

BUT, just in case I DO want/need to return it...anyone know where the 2.0.1 file is so I don't have to deal with this......sketchy version of 2.1-update lol?
