45mb memory constantly and lagging on Evo

most all the time i find the Evo lagging and check the processes with Astro's Process Manager. i see i have usually around 45mb. i free up things i am not using but usually these things are not ones that i have opened. Sprint TV, news, etc. when i free up, i see i have about 105-120mb free.. then the speeds pic up a bit. normal? of course, more memory it will increase phone speeds i know. but why is it so low?

whats everyone elses free memory look like?

i am a new Android guy. have had an iphone for the past 3 years.. the switch is nice and finally getting away from the culture of apple people. but this phone seems to lag a lot unless i constantly kill process's.. any tips for me?

"Laggy" response in the phone is usually CPU, not free memory. My free RAM is *rarely* above 50 MB, and I'm running a custom ROM and kernel. On stock, I never saw it go above 45 MB on a good day. So long as Android can kill off idle apps/processes when memory is actually needed, the amount of free RAM isn't really relevant. As the addage goes: "free RAM is wasted RAM." I don't experience any slowdown or latency in the GUI/processing unless I'm installing an app.

You can use a program like SystemPanel, Juice Plotter, or something else to check CPU use and see if something seems to be constantly pegging your processor, or get a better idea of what might not be cooperating properly with memory management.

Does the problem go away when you restart the phone, and show up later? If so, you can restart the phone, make a note of the running processes, and compare that list to the new list once you notice the slowdown. That could isolate down a problem app.

Other people have reported a hard reset resolving odd slowdowns and battery issues. You could try that as a last resort.

I usually only have about 40-60mb free at any given time and suffer little lag. From my understanding, Android kills processes as necessary should another process need immediate access to more memory. It's pretty good at it since I personally find no performance difference whether I have 50mb or 150mb after using a task killer, which is why I only use task killers to manage the occasional rogue app inexplicably hoarding my cpu's usage.

My only recommendation is to look for an app that might not be working right, and if nothing comes up, try a battery pull. A battery pull, although annoying to do, tends to fix a lot of weird problems. When my application manager lags regardless of how much memory I have, I pull the battery and then it works lightning fast again.

The only places I have lag bad enough to consider annoying are when I'm opening up my bookmarks in a browser and also flipping through the details of my contacts...

flipping through contacts i have lag.. camera opening, market takes 3 seconds to open. sometimes the internet.

maybe its just me but i am used to much faster speeds on the iPhone and it is only 1/2 the processor as this one. i am NOT comparing this to an iphone.. just saying..

i will check into a CPU Usage app right now.

321 MB I only have about 12 or 13 apps. I only keep apps that I acually use. If I use live wallpaper, I only use the pre installed live wallpaper. The ones I download seem to lag a bit. I actually recommend not using live wallpaper at all. I also recommend Quick App Clean Cache. I love this app very useful. I hope that helps.

No custom ROM. No Root. I just dont download a lot of apps anymore. I noticed downloading unnecessary apps take up to much space and your not even using them.

And I clear the Cache everyday using Quick App Cleaner Cache.

Oh, a couple of us thought you meant RAM.

I think t1jordan is confusing internal app storage with RAM (memory). The OP is talking about RAM, not storage. They're two completely separate ball parks, and one has little to no effect on the other.

The Evo comes with 512 MB of RAM (for running applications), and 1 GB internal storage for OS and apps (upper 300's MB free for apps). The amount of free storage space has little effect on actual running applications, unless they need to write something while running. Then you'd run into issues if your storage space was suddenly too low :p But, from what apps I've come across, if you're *that* low on storage, we're talking less than a MB left.

EDIT: pwnst*r beat me to it :p

Sorry, no it doesn't. The Evo does not have 512 of "AVAILABLE" memory for your apps......check it, even before you install any of your apps....i think it's got around 380mb max available....pls check your facts.
