Root Bought a rooted Eris - Question on OS

Should get the Eris via FedEx tomorrow from user msjulie.

She informs me that it's rooted with 2.1

I've read tons of stuff about 2.2 but wanted to know if it's even worth it to upgrade to Froyo.

What benefits do I have?

Will I end up gauging my eyes out with thing that aren't working correctly?

Any personal advice on staying with 2.1 or moving to 2.2 would be great.

I'd like to state first that I don't have an Eris (my wife does) so I haven't used Froyo on it. I do a lot of reading though since I'm always looking to get my wife the best software available. Having said that, Froyo is faster than 2.1 and the only problems that are known issues are:

1. Camera preview does not work without a third party app (market app)
2. Wireless tethering does not work

I personally have not seen anything on a 2.2 with sense for the Eris. I'm not saying it's not out there but I haven't seen anything on it. There is a 2.2 sense Rom for the desire that a couple of devs are looking at porting but I'm not sure what the status is on that.

im pretty sure he has his version switched in his head. hes thinking 2.1 is 2.1 and 2.1 is 1.5

It has the plainjane rom on it which is the HTC 2.1 release + rooted (superuser privs app) and wireless tethering via aNetShare app. It's also currently setup with setCPU as the modified kernel allows for over/underclocking; the current profile is stable.

I basically need to know if I should even bother upgrading to the KaosFroyo?

The problem with your question is, it's personal preference. I can tell you that it's pretty easy to switch back and forth between roms. You could always do a nand backup of your current ROM and then flash to KaosFroyo. If you don't like it you just do a nand restore. I would suggest heading over to xda and do some reading on KaosFroyo to truly help you in your decision.

If you're going to start switching up ROMs, do yourself a favor and get Titanium backup and pay the extra $1 to upgrade to the full version. If time is something you value, the $1 upgrade will be a great investment as it lets you restore all of your apps without having to load each one individually. I didn't know about this app when I first started switching between ROMs and spent way too much time reloading each one at a time.
And Plain Jane is a sense based ROM, which by its nature will be slower than a non-sense ROM like White Widow or KaosFroyo. XtrROM has a semi-sense based version (actually the first of the two versions that he released) which uses only a few sense features, like the social networking aspects of Sense. LauncherPro is a much better home solution than Sense imo, and the recently released Pro (not beta) version will have sense-like widgets incorporated soon.
