I went to Cancun for a week, the last week of June, and a week after I cam back out Sprint bill arrived. We had purchased 4 new Evos (3 + 1 replacement after mine was dropped, insurance covered most) and expected an additional $800 or so on our bill.

We opened the bill to find International Wireless Data Roaming $9,836.46. Yeah. The bill is $11,667.93 total. According to Sprint, I used 13.64674 MB of data. This data was only in Cancun, not my data usage in the States.

I was under the impression that since I had not activated international data/calling (as stated in the terms and conditions) I would not be able to access the internet, meaning no roaming charges. Obviously, since I have the Evo, I have the unlimited plan in the States.

I have called Sprint and they refuse to eliminate or even reduce my bill. I understand maybe and extra $100 in chagres.. but $11k??

Any ideas on how to get this fixed?

You should send something directly into Hesse explaining that your issue. It's worth a shot. If Sprint's wise, they'd use this as a chance to have some good PR. Of course, Sprint also has to weigh that against the number of people who already use the "I didn't realize" explanation.

Guess I'll have a wifi-only Evo when I travel outside the US.

Yeah, unfortunately this is entirely your fault, the problem w/charges like that is you have to go very high up the "chain of command" to find someone even authorized to help with that dollar amount if they even chose to. At Cingular back in the day, reps had $200 limit for disputes, managers 1k and so forth. I remember someone called in to dispute a bill over 20k due to a baby sitter calling her BF in the middle east and racking up Int. Long Dist. Charges, no one could help her.

You're most likely screwed on this, hopefully you prove me wrong.

I wouldn't email. I'd send a letter directly written to Hesse with the appeal. I'd explain to him regret and embarrassment for not knowing what was happening. Knowing that it was my mistake, I'd even offer some type of payment/resolution. I'd also add that I never thought I'd fall into the same situation as the person at another carrier who had a similar problem yet could not get a reasonable resolution.

Then I'd offer to be the top customer service testimonial they've ever had. I'd tell them to put me on any marketing material and/or the Sprint site as a believer that Sprint get's it now.

And then, I'd pray it works.

Good luck.

you start by finding out what the bill is really for, and what rates you are bring charged. data roaming in mexico is $0.002/KB. for 13.64MB of data, that should cost you about $28.

$5 says the 3rd Evo went to a kid who was told unlimited texting and then decided to text a ton while on vacation....and added a few phone calls just for good measure. it's 50 cents per text sent, 15 per text recieved and 1.69 per minute for phone.

that's still a shit load of texting but kids now a days can do 100 without blinking.

At first glance I thought that would be impossible. 1 week to reach a number like 11,667. But on review it's not impossible at all. I've had 10,000 texts on a monthly bill with only 3 phones. they weren't new phones, and we were at home, and there fore probably texting less than if we were away (checking on the house, sending pics to family and friends, jumping on tapatalk :p...

If all you did was text, with no internet use, and no phone use, it would take 23,336 texts at .50 cents per text to reach that number. That's an eyeopener! Granted, we did it in a month, but on a week vacation in mexico, i'd be sending crap all over the place never knowing what it cost. Sorry OP, I hope they show some sympathy. I can definately see how that could have happened to me.
