Root Root VS. Leaked OTA VS. Both VS. Waiting

Rather than what you have, I would like to hear what you recommend and what are the advantages.

This is what attracts me
Root: Wireless Tether, Titanium Backups, Remove bloat, maybe Kernals
Leaked OTA: 720p, faster
Both: Sounds dangerous?
Wait: Safe option

I am very close to rooting and waiting for a 2.2 rom.

to do both I have to do the OTA first and then root? How risky is this?

The thing I want to avoid is having to go back and unroot because then I loose all my history and data that is in the phone (from what I understand).

I had the OTA and then had to root to undo it. My phone really ran poorly on the OTA. Root was neat when I had it... I dl'ed the free flashlight app and played around with that. But I still rolled back to factory. With Froyo right around the bend, to me, it's just not something I need right now.

Oh and yes, you lose EVERYTHING. Not that it's a big deal... contacts are backed up on Google and if you have AppBrain all of your apps are essentially backed up.

Just wait for the OTA. Root your phone. And then download the SkyRaider ROM. It has the OTA on it. but the camera does not work yet.(praying that they get the .32 kernel soooon), then you can have flash 10.1 and have root and the OTA.

I can't imagine that 720p out of a tiny sensor is any better than whatever resolution it is now. I'm going to wait and not risk it.

I don't understand why there's been such an influx of "to root or not to root" threads lately. It takes less than 10 minutes to unroot.

There's a few more variables with the leaked OTA in the mix (though not a huge deal by any means) and honestly, I don't think it's that earth shattering anyway so I decided to skip it since day 1.

I ran into this same dilemma the other day. I was unrooted, installed the OTA, and then got gun-shy when I heard about Froyo potentially coming out soon instead of an interim OTA update. I started looking into rolling back, read through the documentation on the forums here, and was back to a stock install within an hour's time.

Rooting is literally a 3min process on the DInc, and is totally worth it. If I had to do it over again, I would've stuck with a stock install, and rooted it via unrevoked3. The 720p from the OTA is choppy, you can already load custom boot animations if you're rooted, and I saw no major difference in call quality/signal or battery life. YMMV

I have the OTA and root. I've reverted back to a 2.1 rom after the OTA because skyraider rom seemed unstable, but that was most likely due to me using hydra's ocuv kernal which I don't think is compatible with the OTA.

For those afraid of losing apps, history, etc.: Titanium Backup is great for saving programs, settings and such. I'd recommend the donate version for a painless restore. I haven't had any problems restoring after rooting, unrooting, OTA, loading skyraider rom, cm6 rom, etc. There were a couple times I had to manually install a program after a titanium restore after loading a 2.2 rom, and then manually restore the titanium program settings, but it was just a couple extra steps. Absolutely worth the price of the donation.

Root it! You'll never realize how useful wireless tether is until you have it. Case in point: there is a cable shortage right now in my town and instead of waiting for my ISP to fix it, wireless tether is saving the day. Root it. Don't do the OTA. Install a hydra kernel. You'll be happy.

Root, and download Titanium Backup. Backup all apps + system data. Unroot. Install Leaked update. Reroot. Download Titanium Backup. Restore all apps + system data.

You will not lose a single thing. All apps were restored, including game stats/saves whatever. All call logs and settings are restored. Even my scene was restored eventually.

YMMV, but... since I couldn't care less about 720p (I have a perfectly good camera for that) my vote goes to root and wait. I already have WiFi tether (free at that) via the root process, and nothing else in the update (I hate when it's called OTA... that's how it's delivered, not what it is, and since you're installing it manually it is not OverTheAir) interests me that much. Nothing earthshattering.

My rooted Inc runs flawlessly, and I see no reason to mess with that until a truly tested Froyo comes out with all features working properly.

+1. Exact same setup I have. Works perfectly, and the undervolted kernel has gotten me to the point where I only have to charge my stock 1300mAH battery every other night (I'm not a real heavy user, but I haven't done anything else to improve battery life... data's still always on, etc)

I'm rooted and running Sky Raider's 1.9 Froyo Rom w/ Sense. I am very happy with it(minus the lack of Camera). I am not planning on doing anything else at the moment. I think the OTA was not released for a reason. I will wait for the official release.

the ota is now pointless. when froyo hits the dinc, and its supposed to soon, it will have froyo along with all the upgrades that the leaked ota has. so there is no reason to install it imo. just root and wait for a froyo rom with everything baked into it already, hopefully it won't be long.

answerman - That is great to hear that undervolted has helped your battery so much. Do you notice it slowing things down much? I am looking forward to my battery lasting all day, not to mention, two days!

thats not what i mean....i'm sure the updates in the ota work fine. verizon halted the ota for a reason. when they release froyo it will also have all those features that fixed your camera. so in that line of thinking it is pointless, unless your camera issues were really bad and you couldn't wait. latest reports have the dinc getting froyo late this month early august. either way i'm glad i waited.

No reason not to enjoy your phone now, and spend the 15 minutes reverting back later once its here

Yea I was thinking of reverting back than thought of this. What if the leaked update with froyo comes in 2 months? What if there is no froyo and when the ota hits it's the same as the leaked version now?

Too many "what if" Just going to enjoy my fully updated phone now and worry about the rest later.



On a side note if there is a froyo update would it be possible for someone to post a stock nandroid backup of it and have it work for those of us with the leaked update now? Since we have already updated the radio.

you're right, reports can always be wrong. but most of the stuff in the ota i wouldn't really use, i'm mainly waiting on froyo so i just prefer to wait. for you, you wanted to go ahead and benefit from the leak for a while til froyo comes along. so i guess to the op its all really personal preference.
