Well, I'm getting impressions of 2.2 from two ROMs I've been working with, both of which I've seen many here post about: KaosFroyo and Cyanogen.

First I'll tell you what I did with them, then I'll state my impressions of 2.2 on my Eris.

- overclocked to 710/710 with sleep profile at 245/245

- ADW launcher remained

- via Root Explorer, pared it way down of apps, leaving only the "safe" ones and the few I habitually use: Root Explorer, Weather Bug Elite, Transparent Clock, Retro Clock/Date, SetCPU, Meteor (paid) and Launcher Pro (which I did not use with either 2.2 ROMs but downloaded it anyway as I had donated)

Honestly, 2.2 seems draggy compared to those same tweaks and apps on 2.1 (xtrROM 3.03).

It is fast after tweaking the CPU, but it seems to lack the snap and smoothness of 2.1. I am nearly certain that has something to do with the compatibility of the kernel and other deep aspects of Froyo with the Eris graphics and CPU dynamics, overclocked or not.

It is always quite the eye opener going back to xtr after using Kaos for a while; the longer I use 2.2, the more dramatic the difference seems after restoring and firing up xtrROM 3.03.

Interesting...

I'm using Kaos (24) on my Eris, OC'd to 710/528 and 245/480 (sleep). With LauncherPro Plus it seems very fast and smooth. Not really much different than 2.1, except when using multiple apps.

This is also with all of the same Apps I use on 2.1. The only thing I'm not doing is porting to SD, because it's causing issues with duplicate icons and lagginess.

Two things I have with KaosFroyo that I didn't have before root or with the few 2.1 ROMs I've tried:
I finally can connect to wifi on my home network-never could before.
My bluetooth voice command works! I can finally dial without even looking at my phone. :D (note: I didn't try this with the other ROMs, it was basically an accident that I found out that it worked :p)

Over all, I'm enjoying Kaos. Of course I'm new to all this, so I'm sure I will be trying other ROMs in the coming days. ;)

I had some issues with Kaos this morning. Primarily it was getting progressively laggier, and trying to run Pandora and Google Nav almost killed the thing (or so it would seem). So I wiped everything, re-flashed, and then wiped/factory reset after the flash. Now it runs way better than I could have imagined.

I don't see how 2.1 could be faster, hrm.

"2.2 Froyo and 2.1 Comparitive," folks. ;)

We all see threads quickly morph into informative and fun, or not-so-fun diversions off of the original thread idea; I did a poor job of setting this thread off, because my intent was to see comparisons based on what rooted users have noticed between the two.

I first thought a poll might be the way to go, then it occurred to me that discussion of data/experience was the way to go.

Let me try to clarify: when I run xtrROM I am used to nearly instant response in the menus, the apps loading (with the notable exception of Weather Bug gathering updates as I do not keep it set to do that in the background on either 2.2 or 2.1), game smoothness (just one game, "Meteor") keyboarding, etc.

"Nearly instant" is not an exaggeration; it is so fast at 710/710 that I see no need to try to tweak it up any more than that, as it is nearly perfect response on a hand held device.

We've seen others reporting fast ROMs, Aloysius, etc.

2.2, however, as fast as it is, does not deliver that super, nearly instant response in the areas I mention. That is a comparison of 2.1 and 2.2 on my device. ;) ymmv

And that is why I began this thread; I was surprised, and then it occurred to me that maybe the Eris hardware is just pushed to much for 2.2. ?? I don't know... geeks, tell me about it; 2.2 was heading for Eris? I don't know.. I do know it's headed for the 1ghz animals out there in the Android line up.

I was going to edit this in to that last post, but I think it deserves its own post. :D

If the notion of comparing ROMs comes to your mind, the intent of the whole thread will be thrown way off; these ROMs are remarkable, the 2.2 Froyo ROMs and all of those great 2.1s.

I was pleasantly surprised to see 2.2 being brought to the table and one of the Kaos and Cyan ROMs will always have a place in my phone.

I just want to see posts from folks who have run at least a couple of 2.1 ROMs and also spent at least a day or two with Froyo.

As I started to read your post Frisco I was in the middle of flashing xtrROM :) I figure I will give this a try and see how I like it.

I like the extra RAM on KaosFroyo's builds, but with everything not working (camera, softlights, gallery, ect.) and getting slow responses sometimes with the launcher, I have decided to go back to something with Sense. I really like EE and will be all over 4.0 when he releases it.

sorry to get off the subject, but can someone provide the download links to these 2.1 and 2.2 ROM's (xtr rom 3.03 and kaos froyo 23/24 and others)?

Much appreciated. I'm having a difficult time finding these links. I'd like to get started on this and hope to contribute to this conversation!

What I've done is signed up for an account over at XDA, then I just go to the Eris development forum and start browsing. There's lots of great information there, as well as easy links to all the ROMs.

Check it out. WARNING: It may seem overwhelming at first. :D

I have to agree with Frisco. While 2.2 ran well on my eris, 2.1 xtr smoked it. It just felt faster than 2.2. What I did not like was all the sprint branding in 2.2. That bugged the crap out of me. I felt that at this point the 2.2 roms just lacked polish and tweaks to make it run really fast.

I would say give a while and see what comes of it. For now I am sticking with xtrROM 3.03 as it has servered me well thus far.

Conap has a easily flashed zip in his grdlock folder here

HTC Droid Eris ROM Site

called ChangetoVZW.zip -- a 1 second flash in recovery and "Sprint" becomes "Verizon Wireless"

My MAIN reason for rooting is to have more room to install apps. On 2.1 (CELB) that meant using apps2SD which I think contributed to my multiple-spontaneous-reboots-per-day problem. With Kaos.froyo, I no longer have to use apps2SD and I can still install all the apps I want - and no reboots. It is indeed not perfect - camera preview and the landscape gallery are the two big issues remaining that I care about.

As for speed, I noticed a big speed increase when I rooted and went to 2.1. However, when I switched from CELB to Kaos.froyo, I didn't notice that it was either faster or slower. Since 2.1 was already "fast enough" for me, that's all I need to know...
