Root Anything Else Besides xUltimate?

Which pretty much sucks. I have to learn this stuff. Do I have to use Linux or Mac in order to do these, or can I use Windows?

You never really specified what it is you are trying to do.

If you want to theme you just need adb (android sdk) and Gimp or Photoshop or any other picture editing tool. Oh, and winzip or 7zip. If you want to get more in-depth modifying more than just the images/icons, read up on editing the xml files.

If you want to make your own ROM, read up on compiling Sapphire or Cyanogenmod for starters. I think the compiling is what requires linux, but the whole process is a good place to start and will give you an idea of what else you will need to learn.

Ok I appreciate the info. Yeah I'm trying to theme. I want to start there at least before I jump even deeper. I do have adb as well as Photoshop (so much fun), and I do have WinRar, which I do know how to use as well.

Do you happen to have the link with making a ROM by Sapphire or CM?

Building from source - CyanogenMod Wiki

That is the most comprehensive guide you will find for building from source for cm. The problem is that its not for the droid.

Using that guide and using this guide start [CVPCS Android Wiki] which is just building plain froyo I was able to build cyanogenmod and plain froyo. It takes some messing around and combining of the two guides

There's a great guide here ( http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-droid/49813-guide-change-notification-clock-pull-down-text-colors.html) for changing notification bar/panel text color (skip the top part about Droid Customizer, which is obsolete now and move down to the part about colorChange.jar, which is still current). I've used these instructions to modify the notification bar/panel colors on every ROM I've tried for months now, and it does work on 2.2 ROMs.

Also, this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=667951) has great info about theming and The Ultimate Theming Guide.

EDIT: Crap, I just tried the first link above and found out it doesn't work. Good thing I copied the instructions (minus the references to Droid Customizer) into a Word file a long time ago! I'm attaching it for you.
