as the title states, i dont see what the big deal about being rooted is, unless im missing something, dont get me wrong the speed is amazing, i nearly jumped out of my chair after the droid was all set up and i did a reboot just to see what the speed was like, yes i know i am missing out on things such as having rom manager installed, but so far being rooted has given me more problems than just being on stock, ive had quite a few random reboots, and i cant do the *228 to update roaming, it just gives me a recording that says my phone cant be updated and to call verizon, BTW im on BB 0.4 and Chevy ULV 1.0 Ghz, i mean can anyone tell me whats so great about being rooted, and what i have yet to experience, cause so far at this point, when froyo comes out officially, ill probably unroot and go back to stock, nothing against pete or chevy, but i just dont see the hype

As the previous post says you might need to try a kernel with either a higher voltage or a lower clock speed. Not all Droid CPUs are equal and you run the risk of stability issues when you raise the clock speed or lower the voltage, or both. I am lucky enough to be fine with BB 0.4 with xtheme and chevyno1 1.2 ULV. I have absolutely no stability issues.

*228 might just be down right now. I'm not sure exactly why but it seems to not be working on a regular basis.

^ This. I would try a LV kernel instead of ULV. The reboots are due to the kernel.

*228 is not always working regularly..besides, it doesn't really do anything, not sure why that would be a 'deal breaker' even if it was due to rooting (which it isn't)

There is nothing spectacular about rooting by itself. There are things that require root like Titanium backup, modifying the status bar and icons in it, wifi tethering, and more that I can't think of right now. If you don't want to do any of those things, then you are probably better off staying stock.

Same here. BB .4 and Chevy 1.2 ULV. Battery life is great and the phone screams. No way could I go back to stock, especially with this theme. OP needs to try a higher voltage kernal. Good luck.

I can give you one good reason for rooting...

You no longer have to look at the blinding white notification bar we see when running stock. This alone makes rooting worth while in my opinion (of course, overclocking and custom ROMs don't hurt either).

EDIT: Just to check, I tried dialing *228 to update roaming. It worked just fine. Whether this works or not has nothing to do with being rooted.

LOL you are joking right? If you are not willing to try a little trial and error to get your phone running smoothly, root+custom roms and kernels are not for you. personally i would throw this thing in the trash if i could not root it. normally it only takes me an hour at most to get the phone working flawless when i flash a new rom. i have no idea why so many people have problems. of course i took my time and read a ton before i rooted and flashed anything so i knew what to expect.

alright, so i switched to LV instead of ULV, so far all day no problems since switching, as far as themes go, i really like the look of the Blue Energy theme, downloaded all the files (EVspecial frf84b, ssbatt, blueround batt, blue round perc) how do i install all the files, update.zip method? or is there a app i can get off the marketplace that will install it all at once, and if i do have to do the update.zip method, do i need to do it for all 4 zip folders?

Most Themers always include instruction on how you're supposed to do it. just follow those carefully (and ask if you have specific questions in the steps listed, and you should be good to go.

Rooting isn't going to change your life.

It only provides small benefits. For many people (and it sounds like you too) the time to reward ratio is not worth it. That's fine.

I only use stable roms and stick with them for about a month each. The bottom line is that the phone must WORK every time I use it. Cell phones are a tool used to make life easier, first and foremost.

For me, rooting gives the phone an extra bonus while staying stable. For instance, with root I can use ultra-low volt kernels to extend battery life, turn my phone into a wifi hot-spot for free, lower the brightness EXTREMELY LOW (night time), and view flash content.

I don't use roms/kernels that give me reboots. Updating stable roms takes minutes, therefore the time to reward ratio makes rooting worth my time. (BB V 0.3 w/ chevy ulv @ 800 mhz)

well i dont know what the hell happened, luckly i got it fixed, my phone was in a constant boot loop, and then at times it would stay at the motorola logo, believe me i was freaking out, seeing as how my droid is my only means if internet at the moment, after about a hour of playing around with SPRecovery, i was able to reinstall BB0.4, not going to mess with a kernal this time, OCed to 800mhz is good enough for me, and scary thing is i dont know how it even happened, it just rebooted on its own and all hell broke loose

Honestly, I wouldn't be scared of breaking things too much as long as you have a nandroid back up of a stable rom. Trust me, a lot of us rooted folks have tried almost all the kernels available and have gone through what you just went through. The default kernel that's included with BB 0.4 is pretty good however I wouldn't be too afraid of trying other kernels though.

I dont install themes but instead I install themed roms the last one I installed was jrummys Kangerade blueberry 4.0.7 .... I know its an old Rom but, It seems to run so well for me that I have not moved on yet. I am getting the itch tho (been a month) maybe this weekend I will try something new !!! I also do everything from rom manager (lazy) it just makes it so easy and I have had good luck that way.

Things i like about root:

-Speed.
-Customize everything on your phone. (themes)
-Uninstall useless garbage applications.
-Have updates such as froyo before all other droids.
-Wifi-tethering
-Backup applications
-Faster boot time w/ custom boot animation
-Adobe Flash and other apps that require root
+ more i can't think of right now

Soooooo, you're running a FroYo ROM (i.e., a ROM that improves the power and functionality, and it's NOT YET AVAILABLE for your phone,) on your Droid, and you don't see the benefit of rooting? Regardless of whether you're going to go back to the stock 2.2 ROM when it's FINALLY released by Motorola, you're using it now. You say yourself that you're impressed by the improved speed, but you don't see what's so great about being able to USE these custom ROMs before they're available from the carrier?

/facepalm

Incidentally, if you didn't do format your partitions prior to installing BB, you might want to go back and do that. I haven't had a lick of trouble since upgrading to BB 0.4, but I made sure I formatted all of my partitions prior to upgrading.

im not that big of a noob, i read the guide to rooting step by step and formated, i figured id get some static over this thread, and thats fine, im just voicing my opinion on my experience

Rooting allows me to have complete control over my device and that's a big enough gain in and of itself to be worth the effort. In fact, it is why I will never be an iPhone/Apple user or why I will never move on to a Droid X. No root? No deal.

Edit: I take that back. Apparently you can root a Droid X. :D

Even with root, no custom ROMs nor kernels=NO fun! Who cares about root without those key functions IMO

I wasn't suggesting you were a noob; there are a lot of people on these forums that have tried upgrading without formatting, just to see how it worked. As always with these custom things, YMMV.

But, how about this simple fact? Without root, you wouldn't be able to run an overclocked kernel and run your processor at twice the speed of a stock phone. Personally, I think that, in and of itself, is worth rooting the phone. That, and having Android 2.2 before any other stock phones, other than the now-defunct Nexus 1.

Yeah you can root it, but you can't do anything with it. You can't put any custom ROMs on it or overclock it because right now, there's no way to trick the bootloader into thinking the ROM is legit.
