Removing Stock Apps

I am rooted and wondering if there is an easy way to ditch the stock apps I don't need?

Rooters have to be very careful removing stock apps. Some are "safe" to remove, and some are not.

I've yet to see a comprehensive list of what not to remove; I believe that is because it differs from ROM to ROM.

On any ROM I've flashed, I've safely removed all of the "social networking" stuff: facebook, twitter, YouTube, etc.

I found that 90% of the HTC stuff must stay. However, having said that, there are some ROMs out there which have HTC stuff pared down to near nothing and offer separate flashable zip files for the user to include following the main zip flash at will: xtrROM is one of those.

yeah, I wanted to ditch Twitter, stocks, the broken Facebook, Footprints, Friendstream, The regular mail app (Not Gmail), and Music

I've tossed all of those with no anomalies.

The first time I knew that I messed up, I'd deleted Talk. I began seeing force closes on a "com.* file trying to load.

The stock Weather app, also. I'm still not sure about that one; I never use it preferring Weather Bug Elite, but I have to leave it until I can figure out how to tear it out without causing problems.

Does it reclaim space when deleted? I tried removing QuickOffice using Titanium Backup, and although the app was gone from the app drawer and the system/app folder, a manage app listing showed an item for QuickOffice at 3.54 MB still. It didn't show the thumbnail icon, and the name was com.whatever.whatever. Is a reboot needed?

So how do you do it?

Use your file manager with su permissions.

The easiest way is to purchase Root Manager.

After it is installed and the permissions are set, go to system > app and then click the little "mount r/w" icon at the upper right of the screen so it says "mount r/o."

Now, carefully long press the app you want to get rid of and you'll see "delete" on the popup.

*whew* .. that's good.

Your phone might have (fill in the blank) if you hadn't rebooted following deletions.

HAHA! I've worked with PCs enough years to know that anytime you add/remove apps you need to reboot no matter what OS your on. And before the Linux guys jump all over me, you may not NEED to reboot, but it's still good practice so that any errant lingering processes are nuked

I generally won't reboot, because I'm lazy. And waiting for Windows to start takes forever, especially on old PCs.

I have a Windows 2000 network file server, which runs great, and is very quiet (its a Pentium II, no fan and minimal hard drive noise). However, I have no monitor attached, so you have to wait about 5 minutes for it to boot up so you can remote desktop into it and check that everything is working. Unless its a system update, or driver, I avoid reboots on it. Its rock solid though. Ran it 50 days straight without a single reboot.
