Root How to stop automatic app install when switching roms

OK, so I searched but couldn't find anything that was helpful. When I switch ROMs on my droid, and boot up the new ROM, sign in to my google account, etc. the market automatically starts downloading all of the apps that I had. Now, like most rooters, I'm using Titanium Backup and restore my apps through that so I keep all of the data and settings as well. How do I stop the market from automatically starting those downloads? All I need to download is TiBu so I can restore all of my backups. The last couple of times I just go into the market and cancel all of the downloads except TiBu but with over 100 apps, that's very time consuming. There has to be an easier way that I haven't found or read about yet. Thanks for any help, it is very much appreciated!

The only way that I know if is to not sign into google. You can skip that by tapping in each coner of the screen moving clockwise starting in the upper left corner.

Would that still allow me to go download TiBu from the market? Or is there an .apk somewhere that I can install it? Then I just restore my apps, then sign in to Google and it sees them so it doesn't try to download them?

You will have to go and get it from the internet to install or you can pull the app from data/app and copy it to your sdcard prior to switching roms.

You have to be signed into your Google account to use the market so the first thing wouldn't be an option. As far as Titanium goes, if you have it installed right now you can just copy the .apk from /data/app/ to your sd card.

If you turn on airplane mode you wont automatically get your apps synced as long as you arent on wifi. You couldnt get Tibu from the market but TiBu can now make an update.zip that will install it so you could use that to install tibu

That is a nice feature that I was unaware of. I guess that's one of the downsides of the auto app updating thing is you don't read the changelogs as often.

I figured this out a long time ago by mistake. All you need to do is uncheck google sync right before flashing your new rom. Apps will not come back automaticaly but will show up in the market under down loads for a brief time.

Is this the two check boxes under Settings>Accounts and Sync labeled "Background Data" and "Auto-Sync"? Thanks, that's really easy then. That's a good piece of advise that I obviously haven't seen anywhere before.

Also as an FYI TiBu can be downloaded from the interwebs officially Here!

I forgot about being able to download it from their website. That's also very helpful.

Of course, if turning off google sync, like stated above, actually works, then you can log in and just download it from the market like normal then restore all the backups.

I've thought of that but won't that prevent my Texts/other settings from being restored along with preventing the apps from being installed?

google does not backup your texts or settings ... your contacts and calendar will come back as normal.

Here is what I do that works well for me.

Skip the google login with the corner taps, then go to settings>accounts and sync and turn on background data, but not auto sync (must have background data on for market, auto sync off stops the app restore). then, add account>google.

This will work fine for everything, it just syncs as you open your apps (gmail, voice, google account apps basically) so its slower, but it works if you want to leave it this way.

But I then go to the market and download whatev I need, TiBu in your case, let it install, then go back to settings>accounts and sync and then you can enable the auto sync and it will not restore your apps as you have installed something yourself which interupts and cancels the app restore process.

I've come up with a good way, as I wanted the same thing a little while ago; market auto installs are painfully slow. Before I switched over to anything, I backed up TiBu with Astro. I took the backed up TiBu apk and dumped it on my computer. I then wipe and flash the new rom. Once the new rom loads up and I'm at the Android screen, I bypass it with the corner taps, then install TiBu using ADB (you can also install SetCPU this way, so you can start overclocking right away to make restoring faster). I then restore all my apps with TiBu, and then setup my Google account and let all the syncing take place (over wifi). Since your apps are already installed, the Market won't bother. And wala... good to go.

Really? I had just assumed that the reason they show up a few minutes after a ROM Flash was Google was doing it...

I am positive tho it pulls back my search history as well. actually I just noticed it reads my search history's from the computer as well as the phone, weird...

I just tried this yesterday when switching to JRummy's Kangerade 6.0.11 and it worked well. Like you said, just bypass the google login with the corner taps, go to accounts and sync and turn off auto-sync, then add your google account so you can go download TiBu from the market and restore your backups. Then you can go back in and turn auto-sync back on.

Just a note for everyone too, turning off auto-sync before flashing a new rom doesn't do anything because it turns itself back on. You have to do the corner taps and then go turn it off before signing in to google.

I do the app+settings backup for a few apps. Most important for me is Touchdown. With the settings restored, it keeps the font, signature and other settings from being lost. It's a major pain to customize these fields because they are HTML and they are not exportable.

Titanium Backup makes it very simple.

As for other apps, it is hit or miss. Kindle keeps its settings, but other apps won't.

When i switch roms this never EVER happens to me! Does it only do this with paid apps or free apps as well? Ive never bought an app so maybe you have to buy something at least once to enable it?
