Help Best Barcode Scanner

Then you obviously haven't tried the other one.
You open the app. The camera automaticly gets started, and you'll see a rectangular with a red little bar in it. Point at the barcode, and you're done.

...Which is all of one button push less than Shopsavvy. Everything else is exactly the same, you just need to tap a button to activate the scanner. But it allows you to scan product barcodes and do price comparisons as well. I'm not seeing why the other one is better here? ;)

Alex here from the ShopSavvy team. The ZXing barcode scanner is the example scanner they released as part of their open source project. It is a great scanner and if all you are looking to do is scan barcodes it will work great on most Android phones. If you are looking for comparison prices from retailers I would argue ShopSavvy is significantly better. Why? Well ShopSavvy includes all of the results that ZXings scanner has as well as 20,000 additional retailers from around the world. ZXing is a part-time open source project by some great folks, while ShopSavvy is a full-time job for our company (biggu.com). All we do all day is add retailers. In addition to adding retailers we are also getting access to their inventory systems so we can tell you what is in stock and what isn't. Anyway, feel free to use both scanners - we won't mind. :)

Oh and if you want to include our scanning technology in your application (for Android or iPhone) you can for free (it works on all those pesky Android phones with fixed focal length cameras). Here is the link: freebarcodescanner.com

Interesting to see you monitoring the forum! Since you're here, one nag I do have is that for some things when you scan them you get results, but for a totally different product. I'm assuming this is the manufacturers fault for not using unique barcodes? If more than one result is in the database for that barcode, will the software prompt you and show both?

About 86% of the time we know what users are scanning. After doing some research we have learned that the 14% we don't get correct are almost always grocery related. ShopSavvy was designed as a tool for price comparison, not necessarily product identification. Once ShopSavvy figures out the UPC of the product you scanned and your locate our backend servers contact retailers and ask them if the a) know what the item is, b) if they have it in stock and c) how much it is. We then show this data to users. Most retailers are happy to give us this data. Other retailers (mostly grocery stores) won't share this data with us (they don't want to share their prices for a bunch of reasons).

The way our system works the more retailers we have reporting back the more accurate our data will be. For example, it is really easy to enter a product in Amazon's database. Anyone can upload ANY UPC and associate it with anything - i.e. upload a Coke can UPC in Amazon and claim it is a porno and you have poisoned their data. If there are no retailers in your area who give us the price on that can except for Amazon we will show you the result from Amazon - i.e. the one with the porno. But if a lot of retailers in your area offer that UPC and the majority of the retailers agree on what the product is (a Coke can) and a minority think it is something else (a porno) we will throw out the minority result and stick with the majority. So on most items we get it right, but on items very few retailers sell we might get it wrong.

We are planning to include a feature that would allow users to add retailers and products to the system. How often do you think you would add a product? Once a month, once a week or more often? Would you be willing to include a picture of the product? How should we display user submitted results? Should they be mixed with normal results from retailers or separately shown? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Amuse, thanks so much for your input it makes a big difference.

Not living in the U.K. (visiting once a year), what other countries does ShopSavy work in?

Thanks again, not only for your info but for the way you speak about your competitors, it is honoring and professional.

This topic forced me to register here.
My question is: is there any barcode scanner/price compariser which works offline. Bbecause shopsavy is nice but it works good only for US. Im from Poland and i dont need all base of products which are thousands kilometers from me. When i buy a milk for example i want polish price from polish shops. This is not a problem because i can add new to database. But the problem is that i dont have mobile internet because i dont need it. And when i add new product from barcode just to compare it locally shopsavvy and all the programs i tested before wont let me do that because i dont have int. Connection. The only program that works offline and let me build my small database is Barcode box 2. But its very basic, it just adds barcodes one by one, it cant compare prices or at least sort the list of products by name to make comparison easier.

So anybody knows such program?
