Root All things Wireless Tethering for a rooted Incredible.

Ok, I keep hearing different reports of success or not with wireless tethering on a rooted incredible so I wanted to pool all of our information together. I haven't seen this anywhere else.

Once you are rooted and install the wireless tethering for root application...

1. I know some people are getting wireless tethering to work on their rooted incredible.

2. Some people have to do some minor tweaks to get it to work, some it just starts working quickly using barnacle or wireless tether for root applications.

3. On the evo, they have a fw_bcm4329.bin and a fw_bcm4329_ap.bin file, the ap file actually has extra functionality implemented for the chip. This file doesnt exist on the incredible.

4. It appears for those of you having problems with wifi tethering its probably a dhcp problem. Check your symlinks for getprop, setprop, ifconfig and make sure busybox has a grp symlink to it.
commands: grep, setprop, ifconfig. If you have errors with these then you have a problem.

I'm hearing so many different reports in the ##incredibleroot ... Please discuss your experiences with wireless tethering on the rooted incredible.

Ok. I'm hoping the steps I found in the evo 4g forums are helpful to some people:

This was taken from a post for the evo 4g (they had problems too):

Happy to report that tethering is now working using android-wifi-tether!

It requires you to do the following:

adb shell
mkdir /sdcard/android.tether
cat /system/etc/firmware/fw_bcm4329_ap.bin > /sdcard/android.tether/fw_bcm4329.bin

Then start tethering!



Another post in the evo 4g forums:

30. Downloaded the newest android-wifi-tether to the root of my sdcard
31. Went to the market and downloaded an installer
32. Launched the installer, selected the .apk file I downloaded to my sdcard
33. Android gave a warning about installing unsigned blah blah .apk's, so I disabled the warning and it installed without a hitch
34. Fired it up and even without configuring anything tried to tether to wifi... I got a message asking if I wanted to allow root to access wifi-tether, of course I said HELL YES!
35. Checked my laptop I had a unsecured wifi network and I could ping yahoo.com
26. SUCCESS.

another post from the evo 4g forums:

Install root
install wifi tethering at the top of this thread
open wifi tethering app
set ssid, access control list enabled, DO not check encryption!
Close wifi app(i had luck opening and closeing app, might need a reboot)
open wifi tethering again
click to turn it on
should see ap in your connecting device, click to connect to the wifi of your ssid you set
on the evo, you will see your device in the menu access control list
check the box to allow your wireless mac

should be connected and going. Its kinda crude steps but that worked for me.

Those with root will need to take the following steps to get ad-hoc wifi tether mode working:

1. Obtain fw_bcm4329_ap.bin from an EVO dump (located in /etc/firmware)
2. Put in following location: /etc/firmware/fw_bcm4329_ap.bin
3. Enjoy! (hopefully)

After this install android-wifi-tether, latest from the dev site.

Can someone verify these steps work?

Update: Check out new XDA thread detailing kernel + experimental Wifi Tether release for enabling Infrastructure/AP mode WiFi (ie., not ad-hoc) with full WPA2/PSK encryption on rooted Incredible. Makes your phone into a fully accessible hotspot/AP (visible to other android phones, e.g.) and adds real security (not WEP).

HTC Incredible ONLY. People running CM6, SkyRaider, or the leaked OTA don't need this, as it is redundant...but if you're running rooted/stock, take a look.

I rooted my phone for the main purpose of overclocking and wireless tethering. I'm trying to find a thread about the setcpu profiles, they have me clueless, also my wireless tethering works, then it's like it stops working and then I can't get wireless tethering or pdanet to work for another 15 min or so. Anyone had this happen, can anyone explain setcpu to me?

1) MAC address filtering
2) Non-broadcast SSID
3) Encryption

I am looking at my Access Control list and see a list of computers (students in my class) that are supposedly "connected." I see my laptop with a green check mark next to it, but the others on the connected list don't have green check marks.

Does this mean they are connected to my phone but not getting internet?

How do I make it so that they can't see my SSID? I tried to set up Encryption but it never asked me for it at any point. I'd like to enable a password and set up a MAC address filter list.

Any ideas?

I haven't tried it since I upgraded to Froyo but I was able to tether my wife's laptop with wireless tether app with no issues. The only issue I have with it is I want it to have a widget. Aside from that everything works beautifully. Last I checked.

Wireless tether worked fine on my Acer notebook but will not connect on my Acer netbook. It appears to be that the netbook (Windows 7 Starter) does not allow for ad-hoc connections. I am using the 2.0.5 pre-9 on the notebook.
