Buyers remorse?

Have had my captivate for a week now. Came from a blackberry bold. So far I'm loving it. Anyone planning on taking theirs back?

I switched over from an iPhone 3g. With the newer iOS releases, my 3g was running well beyond sluggish. Almost to the point that it was unusable. I was originally planning to buy an iphone 4. And, to be honest, I would have bought one, if they hadn't been short on supplies. Even though I pre-ordered, I was too high on the list. So, when I started to read about the Captivate, and noticed the growing restrictive nature of Apple products, I decided that it was in my best interests to try a new approach.

So far, I am pleased with the Captivate. Are there things about it I would like to see changed? Absolutely. But, at the end of the day the good outweighs the bad.

My concern is that any one of the following issues could be software or hardware related, and if we can't get a definitive answer from Samsung and a firm date on when they will be fixed, before my 30 days are up, it might go back.

GPS issues (I get reception on 7-8 satellites quickly, but getting a lock can take 5 minutes - I've tried all the listed "fixes")
Compass Issues (Compass is jumpy)
Lag (a bad one, obviously software, but not yet told they will fix it)

Overall, its an awesome phone with an awesome screen, but my fear is that the compass and GPS issues are hardware, and therefore, will not be fixable. I can't wait past the 30 days only to find this out.

I've mentioned before that I had/have an iPhone 4. Be glad you didn't try the iPhone 4 first because the iPhone 4 is AMAZING for reading text on web pages. The Captivate is better for media....but for reading full web pages, you need to zoom in to be able to read the tiny text. On the iPhone 4 I could read the full text without zooming in on a tiny page. It's hard to explain what that's like unless you've used it.

That said, in all other aspects, the I like that Captivate much more. I new within 2 days of having it that I was not going to be going back to my iPhone.

I described this a bit before. But using an iPhone is like being in a beautiful walled garden. It certainly has a wow factor when you're there, but gets boring after a while. Android is like being at a skate park where you can do whatever the hell you like without some old guy in John Lennon glasses yelling at you.

Definitely not going back. Although I would love to have a higher resolution Android screen. And note that I'm saying higher res and not bigger screen. I think the 4" screen is my perfect spot for a smartphone.

This was my exact experience. The main difference is I was looking for an Android after Apple broke my 3G with the 4.0 update.

Btw, Baji, you *can* downgrade that 3G back down to iOS3.1.3 and make
it a usable device again. I did and now its my wife's fulltime Bejeweled handheld..

I agree about the text on the iphone 4. I had one. And yes the text was alot better to see than on the captivate. You could view it un zoomed. Where the captivate you have to really zoom to get a clear picture...

There are only 2 things I miss from my iPhone 4 that I returned: The screen resolution and the battery life. I would always get 2 days out of an iPhone charge. I haven't been able to get 2 full days out of a charge on my Captivate yet.

Things that make me happy I switched: Being able to make phone calls much more reliably.

I still may return mine (also coming from a BB Bold like the OP). For me, the stock Exchange client is horrible; you can't organize folders, can't change colors of notifications, and is very restrictive in general as it relates to organization. I'm using the demo version of Touchdown, which is better (still not great) but I have a hard time accepting the fact that you should have to pay $20 for an app that allows you to function like a smartphone should in the first place. Same reason why I don't accept the iPhone 4 "just buy a case" to cure reception issues.

From what I've read, I'm not sure the Froyo update for the Captivate will address my email concerns.

Other nitpicks about the phone as well (GPS issues, battery life, TouchWiz in general) but the screen is great!

Those are my 2 grips about the captivate as well. Battery life sucks. I get about 1 day out of the battery with heavy use. My Iphone 4 I got about 3 days. And the GPS. On the Iphone 4 it worked perfect. On the captivate it never locks on to the SAT. And I have tried all the work arounds...

I had way too many problems with my iPhone4. I had two that I tried and the same problems. They took it back without hassle.

I love the Captivate! Won't trade it for anything at this point! Still trying to figure things out and this forum has been very helpful. I am mostly Mac.

2. Dell Streak? Sounds like it is made to be landscape mode which is annoying. I like portrait much more. Not to mention 1.6 until an update
3. Att is suppose to get atleast one more android device this year. I hear it is a cousin of the Desire, but who knows when that will happen... I can't sit around and keep waiting. I need a phone and I have about 21 days to decide.

I started in the smartphone arena when the latest and greatest was Pocket PC 2002 running on T-Mobile's Pocket PC Phone Edition. I've had WinMo phones ever since, the last one being the HTC Touch Pro 2.

I couldn't stick with MS any longer after seeing where Windows Phone 7 is headed. Although I've had several friends with iPhones, I've just never been able to make myself get one. It always seemed that Apple intentionally hobbled them in some way just to say "Look here! You can overspend on inferior equipment and have an elitist attitude, just like Steve Jobs himself!" Sure their stuff is decent, but never INSPIRING. I wasn't an early adopter of Android because I wanted to make sure it was going to have developer momentum behind it. I'm loving the Captivate so far and can't see leaving the Android platform for the forseeable future.

Same situation for me. The GPS thing is killing me. I am coming from a iPhone 3Gs and loved it, but with the iPhone 4's being on such a long back order, I decided to jump ship and get the Captivate. I LOVE the 4inch screen and think it is the perfect size for a smartphone, but again, the GPS issue is killing and the battery life is HORRIBLE on this thing.

Those 2 issues alone are making me want to take it back, but I am waiting on Samsung to say something about the GPS issue first. I have about 21 days left also before I have to decide.

I think it's funny how many of us had iPhone 4s before and returned them for this phone. I'd be interested to see those actual numbers.

Anyway, normally I'm against bringing iPhones into an Android discussion or vice versa because it just brings arguments, but I think it's fitting here since we're talking about what we had and have and if we like it.

So that said, I'd like to add to what you said. I miss the screen, but the Super AMOLED can hold it's own fine, so I'm ok with that. I do miss the far better battery. This phone has one of the WORST batteries I've seen actually. I also miss HSUPA and working GPS.

Overall, it's hard to say. I do like the phone, but I'm quickly realizing what a turd it is. And let me tell you one thing for damn sure. The issues with this phone are FAR more than the issue with the iPhone 4's antenna. Too bad my GPS won't start working with a simple case.

No plans to switch back or to anything else right now though. I'll stick with it for a little while and see if an update can fix things or if we get our own ROMs going that will.

GPS is what bothers me. I have a full blown built in GPS in the car, but still knowing that the phone HAS this feature but it does not work makes me feel disappointed.
If they fix it, this will be a great phone. If they do not fix it, I would still keep the Captivate, as Aria is too small for my fingers, and there is no other decent Android on AT&T.

This is how I feel right now. I'm getting the GPS issue, the accelerometer lag, Yahoo email not syncing, and battery life.

having a hard time with Samsung Kies and importing my contacts from outlook... also doubletwist saves to both internal and external SD so I have my itunes in both places. I'm trying to figure out how to point it to the desired SD.

I love the phone but if I can't get those two things figured out its going back. I spent 4 hours so far on samsung kies alone with no luck. It shouldn't be this hard to get things done (sync contacts).

I am still debating. I have had my captivate for about a week. I too upgraded my iPhone 3G to iOS4 and got a snail for a phone. I went to the apple store and the guy said "looks like you are screwed." So that made me not want to give Apple any more money. I know they don't care about $200 but it is the principle. I was looking at getting it to.

However, I have a few grips about the phone.
1) GPS - I need to know this will be fixed or it is going back in another 21 days.
2) Bluetooth Keyboard - I think I can get this to work, via KeyPro app, but havn't confirmed it yet (has anyone linked a BTKB to the captivate).
3) Exchange Folders - They layout sucks. At the top they are all in ABC order not arranged by the strucutre I have them in Outlook (i.e. a subfolder isn't a sub in the parent one, they are all equal).
4) Battery Life - I am diligently playing with the "Advanced Task Killer Free" app and it seems to work well. Only 1 day life, but doable.
5) Battery Slow to charge.
