"K-9 Mail"...answer to POP3 email blues???

I was underwelmed with the email client which handles POP3 (hotmail, yahoo, verizon, etc) accounts, and was looking for an "Outlook Mobile" type client, coming from my Moto Q. The stock client just seems to limited, aside from having some issues. Looking around, I came accross the K-9 Mail client and found that it was available in the Android Market.

Its only been installed for a few minutes, but in checking the settings/features, its much more robust than the stock client. Many more check intervals, options to set default number of messages, delete from server on delete option...the only caveat on install stated that it may have issues with Hotmail (i.e. Plus or paid accounts may have connection issues), but my basic free Hotmail came thru fine. Text is much easier to read with the white background, black text and 2 line info display. FWIW, you can also manage identities, and has more features I don't understand, and probably wont use.

With my check interval at 3 hours, I sent a test message from my comcast account (not involved with DROID) just now and got some certificate error message from the program (has its own mail folder for errors), when I performed a manual check/sync. I just ran it again and the message came thru. I think it may have been SMTP setting issues, but they seem resolved.

Based on the the interface and options alone, I think I'll work with this app.

The flashing purple led isn't stock? Its independent of the green led, physically...I just thought I wasn't paying attention all this time and it was the default color for notifications and not a K-9 thing. I really need to start putting this thing down and not have it working all day.

The only thing I did was change the "theme" from Dark (like the native Droid mail) to Light, with the white background w/black text. I'll look for more settings.

Hmm, you also see purple. Maybe I didn't change a setting then. Duh. I could have sworn I changed a setting for LED on email notification. Gotta think the chances of us both choosing purple aren't too high though.

Guess I gotta follow your advice -- put this damn thing down :)

Had the phone since Saturday...I don't know how it functions when in sleep mode.

I just noticed my green LED isn't flashing...I thought that was status. Oh wait, maybe its 3G/1x status, and not flashing because I'm on WiFi.

I just installed Road Sync (Exchange), companion software for Docs to Go, and its setup allows you to change LED color notification to Green, Red, Yellow, and Blue. I can't find it in GMail, and its not configurable in K-9. K-9 is in fact Purple by default.

That triggered my memory: it was Note Me where I changed LED color for reminders. Installing so many apps, their settings are all getting mixed up in my head.

Actually, my phone happened to not be in use for a minute, and I got a message on my 2nd K-9 account, and it was pink'ish. It doesn't correlate with the colors of the messages in the respective inboxes, but cool to know there is a differentiation.

I just can't leave it alone long enough for any status lights to come on.

do you have to delete your android email app so you don't get double notifications? reason I ask is because after I did that I'm not getting any notifications theough k9 even that box is checked...any help would be appreciated

I hadn't slept Sun or Monday, and by Tues/Wed, I wasn't in the most coherent state of mind so take my results with a grain of salt. FWIW, I had both the native app, and K9, setup with hotmail and verizon POP3 accounts. From what I remember (again I was doing a lot of testing with various scenarios) both apps were receiving mail. I can't begin to tell you what did what, but I believe you will get notifications if you have an Inbox setup on multiple apps.

If nothing else, turn off the sync on the app that you don't want to use. It took me a while but if you go to the "Accounts" screen, in the native email app, if you press and hold a given account, a menu will pop, allowing you to delete the account. I though I was going to have to do a system reset.

This part I know for sure, with K-9 you have to assign a folder a "Class". After that, you have to configure which "Class" will be synched. Again, with K-9 for sure, if you have multiple accounts, they get assigned a different LED color when new mail arrives. I'm not sure if this is true with the native app.

You don't have to delete the "app", you can either just set the native app to "not synch", or "Remove account" altogether.

There is a way to import your POP3 email accounts into the GMail app. Just google "Gmail Mail Fetcher". It will give you options to create new "labels" if you want some separation, or "Filter" rules. But for the most part, everything is imported in to the Gmail inbox. It will put a clearly visible lable on each message from the outside POP3 account, when in the "Inbox" view.

Gmail app, so far, is most likely the most feature-rich POP3 mail app...unfortunately.

I'll try K-9, but wonder exactly what the POP3 blues are. I am not a techie, and this is my first phone that does more than...make phone calls:). I have 2 gmail accounts and 1 verizon account. Gmail appears to be working fine. Verizon, however, isn't. I'll go hours before getting e-mails. I called Verizon the first time this happened (4 hours). Miraculously, while I was on hold, the logjam broke. Days later, I hadn't gotten mail in 12 hours. Called Verizon, stumped the person, who went and asked someone else. Came back and told me to restart my phone. That worked. Well, ya, it might work, but it's a tad cumbersome if that's how I have to get my mail! I don't know why it happens. I saw another thread suggesting having all mail go through gmail. For fear of mixing up my accounts (which are used for very different reasons), I am reluctant to do that. Is it my phone, or is this a general problem with POP3 or just Verizon?

Also, is there a way to empty email trash?

I don't know if this is related, but I also have disappearing ring tones. I used Mabilo app, got 5, 1 remains, 4 routinely disappear from my ringtone list, though they are apparently still on my phone.

Thanks!

If you're using the native email app "E-mail", for your Verizon mail, then any problems are most likely application related. If you're not receiving mail in a timely manner, check both the application's sync settings, as well as the main phone settings for "Background services" and "Account sync"...sorry, took my DROIDs back today, can't give exact terminology.
