Is the GPS issue that big of a deal for you?

Yes we all know there are some issues and it can be fixed sort of....

Why does everyone make it a big deal?

Are most of the users of this phone road warriors?

I understand we all paid X amount of money but again realize this phone has only been available a week or so.

I find it kind of odd people are returning the phone for just GPS issues.

I really like the phone and everything that the Android OS is about.

Yes... I will return the phone if the GPS doesn't start working before 8/20 (the last day I can return the phone). GPS is the main reason I have a smartphone instead of a standard messaging phone that would be much cheaper.

I travel a lot and have already gotten very used to having the ability to get directions, and search for what is near by from my phone.

Every other problem I hear of people having are minor in comparison.

Coming from a Tilt 2 where it pretty much worked out of the box (and even better after a ROM flash) but was slow and ancient, I expected the Captivate to be captivating. I used to get a lot of updates based on location and geolocation and now I can hardly do that with the Captivate and the GPS just ends up eating battery if I leave it on searching. I'll still keep it in hopes that it will be resolved soon, but it is a pretty big deal for a lot of people.

Just like jmreed said, GPS is kind of a big deal to me. I would much rather have a phone that updates maps for free, than have a GPS unit who's maps may be outdated in a month, and I would need to pay an arm and a leg for. As of right now, it's not a huge concern cause I'm very familiar with my current location, but I would like to use this for travel, or getting to a place I've never been to before in this area

GPS is a huge deal. I like to be able to pull up directions in a foreign location and know where i'm driving. I like to pull up maps and see where to eat right around the corner. Weather app updatesthe weather as I drive through the city or across state so I always know what I can expect. Plus.. I'm paying money for a phone that is suppose to work. SO yeah it's a big deal.

It'd be nice to get a fix, but it's not really a deal breaker for me. Mine is fairly accurate as to my location (says within 70m but on the map it's more like 200), but I can read maps fairly well. All I have to do is look for the fastest way to get from where I actually am to the route on the map then follow that.

I've been testing the GPS on this thing as much as possible lately... I haven't had a problem yet. The only thing I could even call a problem would be that the first time I tried to locate myself using Google Navigator it couldn't connect to the satellites until I went outside. After that initial connection its worked awesomely. I've been using it on the way to/from work and such just to fiddle with it, and it catches me missing turns and recalculates in at least half the time that my regular Tom Tom dedicated GPS does.

I can't help but notice that almost all of you will use the GPS as a substitute for a standalone GPS device. Am I the only one who has a different important use for the GPS? lol.

GPS is a very big deal if you're used to use 1) YELP! while walking in the city 2)Walking/Jogging/hiking exercise 3) Golf GPS.

Of course, I'll use it for driving as well but with help of using YELP or something similar.

Also, it will haunt me forever thinking that I spent almost the same amount of money you could buy an iphone 4 thinking that the GPS is crap (even if you're not going to use it) I would really feel bad about my purchase, wouldn't you?

I hope Samsung fixes their crap.

Whether we use it or not is irrelevant IMO. It is a feature that is advertised and it should work correctly. I don't like making excuses for giant corporations.

I understand we all paid X amount of money but again realize this phone has only been available a week or so.

However it was manufactured and being tested for a while, so it's not like it was made a day before it was shipped.

If it makes you feel any better, there is no iPhone that has built in turn by turn GPS for free. Yet, at an AT&T store they cost the same. Also, I've had both the 3GS and the iPhone 4, neither of them had GPS that were worth a crap. They were usually pretty inaccurate and drained battery just as fast if not faster than the GPS on the Captivate does.

The navigation is free on these phones and I think the cheapest that compares to google nav is Tom Tom and its $49.99 and I think you even have to pay a yearly fee.

I really think that samsung will release either a firm ware or some kind of over the air fix.

Samsung makes really great tvs and I dont think they would want to purposely make a bad phone or any type of product

Yes I know, but fortunately I have a Garmin Standalone GPS so I'm really not into using the iPhone's driving GPS. I use my wife's iPhone when I'm walking and looking for certain stores that I can't find (in the city) or elsewhere. I like to walk a lot and YELP is really a big help for me. If I need driving directions, I use my Garmin.

I actually find the iPhone very very boring. Most of it works, but is sooo boring (jailbroken or not). That is why I was so happy when the Captivate showed up on AT&T because I know it would be my next phone and its cheaper if you buy it with no commitment. Now that I have it, its so disappointing because of this GPS problem, as it is very important to me. I've been telling my wife about Android being great and all but when she sees me on the phone with AT&T/Samsung techsupport angry .. she then says to me "You should have bought the iPhone". Ouch.

It is ok to have a problem with a new device. But to ignore and pretend that they (Samsung) don't know that there is an issue, makes me sick. I've talked to a rep and they are saying that they don't know this issue.

I'm still hoping that they will release a fix before my return window is up. If they want to beat Apple, this kind of support is not a good start.

I think what irritates me the most is that neither Samsung or AT&T has said _anything_ about this issue. The GPS is essentially inoperable, which is completely unacceptable. Now, if one of them were to say that they're aware of the issue and are working on a fix, then I would at least have some confidence and feel a bit more reassured that the issue is going to be fixed.

If they don't have a fix by 8.18, when my 30-day return period is up, then I will for sure be returning the unit.

I dunno if this will matter to anyone... I used the GPS tonight coming home from work (just been fiddling with it testing accuracy) and when I set it up in the car it seemed to be JUST out of range of the WiFi at my job. It showed the WiFi icon in the Notification Bar but it had no signal. While this was there it couldn't connect to the GPS. I quickly disabled and re-enabled WiFi and it INSTANTLY connected. Has this been the case for anyone else? This was actually the first time I've noticed any problem with the GPS.

so im guessing the people who are calling this a dumb thread have never been early adopters to any new device?

the iphone was horrible when it came out

no app store,no gps, no MMS,no landscape mode,no copy paste.

it went 2 years without most of these features but people still bought it. I know, I was one of them.

True, this is 2010 and most phones have all of these features but im gonna give them some time to sort all this out.

do these incompetent morons even test the phones before They start selling them? Is samsung becoming the toyota of the smartphone business?

My toyota can find me on the map! (even while i'm accelerating out of control! hur)

Look, I'm going to go into the store and see if I can get it exchanged. I mean, some people's work perfectly so since they all have the same software wouldn't that mean it's a hardware chip defect? Well I'll let you know what I find out from them. But if they try to be all obstinate and deny there's a problem then I can keep my money and they can keep their defective phone.
