just wanted to see what insurance everyone got (if u did) on their droids. i was offered by verizon 2 choices. either verizons insurance like $9 a month, or another company which was like $80 for a full year. they talked me out of the verizon one. apparently the verizon insurance gives u a used phone that went through a 15 point inspection. with the other plan u most likley get a brand new phone but if you get a used one its been through 150 point inspection. i paid the $80 for the other company. (oops forgot to say the company is "Protect Cell")

Is there a deductible if you loose your phone, it breaks, etc if you go w/ Protect Cell??

Guy at the VZW store told me that the $5.99 insurance wouldn't be honored on Smartphones any more, so I switched. (I'd already had the $5.99 from my previous BB Pearl.)

If he was either uninformed or just looking for a sale and I could have grandfathered the $5.99 I'm gonna be unhappy...

Anyone know for sure what's the truth here?

Well according to my bill I am still on the $4.99 a month plan for my insurance and was not told of any changes when I ordered my phone last week over the phone. SO I think you should go back and protest...

You most likely bought your device from an authorized reseller as opposed to a corporate store. In a corp store, the only flavor is Asurion.

Yes, the deductible is $89 per claim, and you are limited to two claims in one year.

Verizon offers 3 tiers of insurance and can only be added within the first 30 days of purchasing a device. The extended warranty which covers manufactures defects does not take effect until after the manufactures one year warranty is up so you will be paying $1.99 every month for the extended warranty for a full year before it does you any good. The second tier is the Asurion protection which I pay $6 a month for my Droid and the 3rd is the total protection coverage that is a combination of the extended warranty and the Asurion coverage for $7.99 a month for the Droid but the same catch applies in that the extended warranty does nothing for you until after a full year of paying for it. I dont see any point in buying the Total Coverage unless you plan on keeping the device for more than a year, and even then its questionable IMO.

I'd call and complain - they should have grandfathered it for ya.

I went with SquareTrade Warranties, i think it was $67 for 2 years. And it covers Accidental Damage from Handlings(damage from liquid spills, item drops, or any other accidental damage) and hardware failure. Only thing it does not cover is willful damage, negligent use, theft or lost. There is $50 deductible for ADH. And if they can't repair your phone they will gave you the full refund of your phone max ($399). I still think this is better then verizon wirless insurance they offer, which in two years end up costing you $240 (assuming its $10 an month).

So based on what I am reading insurance is well worth getting? I have never had insurance on my phone and never had a need for it. My Droid will arrive tomorrow. When I purchased it online I declined the insurance but it did say I had 30 days to add it. I probably will since this phone is far more expensive to replace and probably won't handle as many drops as my Razr and Env2 did!

So if I got it straight, the Total protection and extended protection probably aren't worth getting correct? The third party insurance souns like the best option correct?

Thanks

I got the $7.99/month Asurion plan. Never got phone protection before, but the Droid spends a lot more time in my hands than my previous non-smart phones, and it's got lots of stuff to break.

I skipped the $1.99/month extended warranty, because it seems that Verizon basically provides a $50-deductible extended warranty for free, and the $1.99/month just buys down that deductible to zero.
