Hi, this is my first android phone and i love it, i've been waiting on at&t to come out with something forever and i finally have the captivate.

obviously now i want to root it but i have one question that i couldnt really find the answer to. it probably sounds dumb but i just want to check. if i root my phone and install a custom rom that is 2.2, does that mean the my phone is now running 2.2?

thanks for any help

oh and will rooting and putting a new rom have any effect on the gps problem?

Yes it does mean you'll have Froyo. I'm running it on my Droid now and will be running it on my Captivate when I switch over.

As far as the effect on GPS, if the developer(s) of the ROM implements a fix into it, it should fix it. There's other fixes for it in the forum....have you tried it? If not here's the link....

Well I may be wrong but I thought there aren't any custom 2.2 roms yet for the captivate... how does this work?

Nope there isn't just yet. The first build will probably be CyanogenMod team. I'm running 2.2 Froyo on my Droid from VZW. I'm be switching to AT&T and getting the Captivate real soon, by then I'm hoping there will be an Alpha release of a Cyanogen build. If Samsung or AT&T leaks a 2.2 version of Froyo with TW on for the Captivate, developers will also work to enhance that....whenever it happens. I for one will be trying to theme a few things on it and of course share it with the Android "nation".
