I am thinking of moving from a BB 9700 to the captivate and I have afew questions.

  1. I am going to access Gmail via IMAP. How fast is it and is it true IMAP?
  2. Does the calendar and contacts sync with Google instantly?
  3. What is the real life expectation of the battery after without streaming of video or audio?
  4. Does it offer the free turn by turn GPS from google? Same as the Droid? If not, how is ATT's branded GPS on it?
  5. Can the icons on the bottom dock be customized?
Is there anything I need to know coming from a BB?

5- I can remove the standard email icon and replace it with the GMail icon on the bottom dock? I was told by a rep that the UI doesn't allow it. I don't want to root the phone just yet.

Technically, the rep is right - you can't change that right out of the box. However, get a custom launcher ( I suggest ADW.Launcher though LauncherPro is good also) and you can customize that and more, without rooting. ;)

I found this solution. Can someone try it and confirm that it works or not please?

Great discovery! I have been wondering this myself. I tried it and it works. I just moved the default e-mail icon off the dock and placed K-9 Mail there in it's place.
Here's how to do it. Click on the Applications icon. Click on menu key. Choose View Type. Change to Customizable grid. Hit Menu key after the choice window closes. Click Edit. Now click and hold the icon you want to move. Drag it to the area you want to store it. Click and hold the icon you want to put on the dock. Drag it to the dock. It's that simple.
I just moved from the Bold 9700 last week to the Captivate. At first I missed my Blackberry....but I'm over it and LOVE the Captivate!

Anything that you miss about the 9700?

Initially I missed how well it pushed my emails to me, but I found the app K-9 Mail today and now I'm getting my e-mails just as quick as on my BB. I'm looking at the apps now to set up "profiles" for different ringtones and notifications sounds like the BB had. Some sounds aren't appropriate for the workplace and BB made it easy to change the sounds. Other than that, I'm very happy!
