Help Is the Moment still a better phone than the Intercept?

I've been convincing my brother to get the Moment, which is free from Amazon for new contract, but a best buy rep was telling him to get the Intercept because it is a newer phone. I don't see a lot of discussion yet under the Intercept forum, but I've learned that it has a slow internet connection with rev.0 instead of rev.A and it has a non-standard screen resolution which makes some app not run correctly. But I read about data lock ups with the Moment and was just wondering if this is already a non-issue or a real serious issue. My brother does not want to spend money with the phone and wants only free phones that come with the contract. I thought the Moment is a good choice. Coming from a Hero, I couldn't really recommend it because I was having some issues which made me replaced it with an Evo.

The data lockups area a serious issue, but the development community may have a fix for it finally... Other than that, the moment is much better than the intercept.

There's still far too few posts about the Intercept to even know if Samsung fixed the lockup or GPS issues or if it suffers from some other issue. I don't understand the rev0 thing at all. I'm guessing here, but I bet the phone is capable of rev A but is downgraded just to make it less desirable to the more serious user. There may be things taken from the Intercept for the Moment, but I doubt the hacker community will latch on to this phone and develop much for it. Sprint is positioning this phone one very small step up from a feature phone, and that's where it will remain. OTH, because of the lockup, gps and tepid mfg support, I can not/would not recommend the Moment.

I don't know about that. The posted results are mixed at best. It didn't work for me.

From day 1 the moment was never what I would call a perfect phone. Battery issues, lock-up issues, slow response time...then I upgraded to the newest Android OS. My phone went straight to hell!!! If I text more than 5 minutes, the battery is half gone. Add one or two phone calls and it is screaming to be plugged in. I HAVE PURCHASED TWO NEW BATTERIES...it is NOT the batteries. That bitch as I have grown to call her, the Nuance voice command, if I could I would rape her and then burn her at the stake! It works WORSE than ever. Yes I have trained the bitch. Why can google have such a great voice command on the same phone while the Nuance bitch seems to be on the rag all the time??
I have been to the Sprint store so many times, talked to tech support, written emails, that they finally did it...they broke my spirit. I just don't give a **** anymore. As soon as my contract is up I plan to RUN to the nearest Verizon store and do business with them.
I know, it is not Sprint's fault my phone SUCKS, but they have been little to no help. So...in a nutshell, I am done with sprint and more done with Samsung. They can both go to hell.

I guess I'm one of the lucky few. I've had my moment since April and have had very few issues with it. Most of the issues I've had ended up being more or less operator error. I can text, surf the web and talk on the phone all day without worrying about the battery dying on me. Most days it only gets down to 40-50% by the time I plug it up before I go to sleep. I've only experienced data lock up twice in nearly 4 months and the GPS works great. In the last month I've used it more than ever and it's taken me to my destinations without incident. Loving my moment!

It's better than anything else he'll get for "free" I assume he's ruled out the EVO or waiting for EPIC cuz they aren't free and won't be for quite a while. EPIC 4 will be out by then. HEHEHE

I'm with you there, definitely I agree that the Moment will be a better phone than any out there that's free. Getting Sprint's family plan for himself, wife and kids with the free Moment, I thought was the best deal he could get, but what really made the difference was getting a reception inside his house. I couldn't get any decent signal inside the house with Sprint, so that means he would need to call retention dept for a free airave after he has signed up for the plan. Sprint won't give it to him outright. It's just too much trouble for him and still with no guarantee that his phone will work well. My brother's coming from a very old simple phone, the LG enV. With a little bit of learning required for Android phones, no signal inside his house, and having known that the Moment has quite some problems, though some might have workarounds, made me think that it may not be an appropriate phone for him. There isn't really any phone out there that doesn't have problems, but I guess going for a much simpler phone quite similar to what he used to have and stay with Verizon might be best for him. In the end, he renewed his contract with Verizon and got the free Samsung Reality for the family. He is paying more for his plan because each phone requires $10 for limited internet.
I think the best scenario would have been for Sprint to give out free airave right away to new customers who ask for it because they don't have signal inside their house, then with airave he gets signal inside the house, he gets free Moments, enjoy the great plan from Sprint with unlimited data and I would have lots of free time rooting 4 Moments to customize it for their need. Too bad it's just not what happened.

the moment is definetly better than intercept IMO. no flash,lower res screen,rev a,theres more cons that i just cant think of right now. but yea intercept sucks. only good thing is its getting froyo.

I read posts like these and can't help but wonder if the people having these problems are causing the problems themselves or are simply inept.

To the OP - Yes the Moment is a better phone than the Intercept. In this case newer does not = better. I would never downgrade to the Intercept.

As of late, my data lock ups have just gotten stupid insane. They happen at some ridiculously ******ed times and its just so unpredictable. Its never been so bad before. I was trying to keep my phone on without ever turning it off until I get the Epic 4G because of fear of another boot up -> crash -> reboot -> crash loop. Yeah... that didn't go well due to a gazillion data lock ups. I am scared to even used quick boot to reboot after a data lock up because I think that may help in causing those horrible boot loop like problems I get.

I have had the Moment since November also, and I have just minor issues. I have not rooted the phone, but I did the 2.1 upgrade, so I know it wouldn't be a problem if I want to do it. I wish it had a better battery, but I don't know a smart phone out there that you couldn't say the same thing. I have had only a few CDMA lock-ups, so maybe I just got lucky there.

I just got my wife the Intercept, it was an upgrade for her from the original LG Rumor. The Intercept is most certainly not an upgraded Moment. Its lighter and smaller than my Moment, but it is also less capable with a worse screen. I haven't tried the multi-touch (actually I forgot it was supposed to have it because I'm used to my Moment). But the bottom line is my wife likes it so far, and it does much more than her old phone without any issues so far.

There are different lock up fixes out there. Noob's version, or the one built off the Acclaim, or the one built off the Intercept. I forget which one I'm using, but whichever one I'm using I haven't had any issues with so far. 3d acceleration on the Moment sucks though, same with the Intercept. Samsung didn't write any proper drivers and openGL support for the Moments gpu, however 2.2 is suppose to have native support with this chipset. So as soon as you see 2.2 updated on the Intercept or Acclaim is when you'll see it on the Moment. Battery life sucks, but you can get a battery to last like 3 or 4 hours for like a dollar on ebay. Bigger resolution, most apps won't even support the Intercepts tiny resolution. AMOLED screen. And personally, I like the keyboard on the Moment better.

are you running stock or a rooted rom? cus man, your phone sounds possessed. the problem you're having happened to me once when i was running a version of nexus lighting and i decided to go and clear data/cache from a bunch of apps and also go into recovery and clear the dalvik cache just for fun (well, really in an effort to clear memory). when i rebooted, my phone went nuts, locked up like crazy and rebooted idk how many times. luckily i had backed up my system before clearing everything so i went back and reflashed my backup and my phone went back to normal.

sorry for getting off the thread topic. but anyways, i went and played with the intercept today, and i may be biased, but the moment is just better in every single way.

I always think eactly the same thing. My phone has been great since last December when I got it. I've gotten it into a few bad spots but was always able to get out of it. My only real complaint is the gps is very weak but it does work.

There's just no way that some people can get one bad phone after another without being part of the problem it seems. I've seen people go through as many as 6 phones and claim they were all bad. It would be interesting to get a hold of one of the bad phones to play with it.

Since replacements are usually refurbs, if the refurb process is poor it's entirely possible to get bad phones over and over. When my old Mogul packed it in I went to a repair center. They had 6 refurbs to swap with and the best of the bunch had a worn out slider and screen flaws (white spot), the worst looked like it had gone a couple of rounds with a wire brush. Apparently Sprint/HTC's refurb process amounted to turning the unit on. If it boots it's refurbished. I ended up accepting the best of the bunch which lasted a couple of days till the screen went dead at which time I was upgraded to a Touch Pro.

Ive had both and prefer the intercept. Yeah the screen is smaller not as clear. The internet is a little slower. Still fast enough for youtube normal quality, pandora high quality, and sprint tv though. The flash on the camera wasn't a big deal to me. But the darn thing works, which is more important to me than all these other things combined. It'll just chug away on the internet and do gps reliably which the moment could never do for me. I use this analogy: what's better a car that starts every morning and is reliable or a super fast car that is hit and miss if it'll start for you?

After a year of troubles (and replacements) of my Samsung Moment I finally got them to realize it had serious issues and they offered to replace it with the Intercept which they swore up and down was an "upgrade or equivalent" phone. I got it tonight and I'm seriously peeved at Sprint...I already want my Moment back even though it didn't work half the time.

Reasons why Intercept is worse:

-No flash
-smaller screen with worse resolution
-crappy lcd screen vs beautiful OLED screen on Moment
-667 MHz Samsung S3C6410 (ARM11) vs moment 800 MHz
-certain keyboard keys are *very* hard to push, I REALLY miss the Moment's keyboard. The way the keys were shaped made them so easy to type with.
-home and back buttons won't work most of the time
-battery life is same if not worse then the old moment
-rev 0 internet on new, rev a on moment
-google maps will not find my location no matter what I try
-Intercept feels like it's about to fall apart if I even put it in my purse wrong and is way too small.

These are just things I've found in the last hour of having the phone. I'm seriously considering paying the $200 to cancel my sprint contract. I paid for the Moment especially for the fact that it had a flash, really nice screen. How could they possibly consider this an "upgrade or equivalent"? Because of Froyo or multi-touch? I'm reading on here that the froyo version doesnt even use flash so how would it matter?
