Go try one of those 7" Augen Gentouch Android tablets that are available at Kmart for $149. Supposedly this thing is running Android 2.1 but it feels more like Android 1.0 (if that is a real thing). The EVO absolutely DESTROYS this thing in every conceivable way. Every second I used it I realized how bad it was and how great the EVO is.

I used the droid x and now appreciate my evo even more. Anyone that holds the Droid X and Evo side by side will appreciate the quality feel of the EVO. The droid X felt really cheap unfortunately. I still like it. I like all high end android phones. They help fight the good fight. But Motorola really needs to learn how to design a quality device. It felt like the cheap plastic buttons would break in my hands.

Well, you have to keep the Gentouch in perspective -- it's a $150 device that has no carrier to subsidize. It's probably the best they can do for the price.

I'm still curious about getting one for my wife. Was it simply too slow or was there something in the interface that was lacking? $150 and no monthly charges for an entry level tablet that can install apps is still a pretty good deal, but a POS is a POS.

I used my itouch the other day. I had no idea how blazing fast my evo was until I used my the itouch again.

HAHA same for me hadn't dug out my i touch in a while used it to go jogging the other day and was dumbfounded. I have been spoiled recently with the Evo it felt so mini its amazing what perception can do. Never saw my itouch as small or insufficient until i spent a month with me Evo.

I agree. I held a Droid X at Best Buy and the thing felt so cheap.

It was simply a POS.

1. Screen sensitivity was unbearably poor.
2. Screen quality was worse than any device I have used in the past few years, dull and lacked sharpness.
3. Hardware buttons on the rear of the device are a pain to use.
4. No hardware volume keys.

On the positive side the form factor was absolutely perfect.

I use my wife's iPod Touch many nights out of convenience because she keeps it on her nightstand and often I grab it to look something up. What struck me was how pixelated the screen appears compared to the EVO. Before I got the EVO I never once thought the iPod Touch screen looked bad, I thought it was quite good actually. It's just in comparison to the EVO it looks like SD compared to HD.

This is the one that I have been looking into
HMN-10001

I spoke with a sales rep and he said that it "should" be upgradeable to 2.2... I'm not a big fan of "Should" but I just can't get away from the >10" screen!

It's $289 on Amazon
http://www.amazon.com/Touch-Screen-Android-Tablet-Market/dp/B003WC2B28/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=miscellaneous&qid=1280361550&sr=8-3

Check out the specs you linked to:

Operaton System Google Android v2.1; Software upgrade to Android v2.2 Froyo in Q4.

Yeah, that does say "Operaton" :) but it's that they say 2.2 Froyo in Q4 on the specs page that made me take notice. I think I'll wait for it to actually happen, but I could see myself getting this.

Doesn't list capacitive screen, so I assume it's resistive.

BTW, check out the dimensions:

Size (LWH): 3.15 inches, 3.94 inches, 2.36 inches

I'm going with misprint.

Also, no resolution listed. 800 x 480 on a screen that size is not appealing.

Yeah, the amazon listing seems to have a few misprints.

BTW, the official page says res=1024x600... though subject to change

And it can't fit in your pocket. And if you tried to hold this phonr to your ear it would make your head look microscopic.

like this guy?

so is this just a android phonr that cant make calls?

In a sense, yes, exactly.

But what it can do, via wifi and no extra phone charges - is to act an eBook reader (I use Aldiko and just access Project Gutenberg (lots of great books there, I'm reading Moby Dick now and Macbeth later), but you can also get the Kindle app for Amazon's stuff and the Nook app if you're a B&N fan) and some of these come with one built-in.

You can also email, web surf QUITE easily, use a news reader to keep up on your fav news that way, and also World Newspapers, Congress app...

And Remote Droid just can't be beat for controlling an HTPC.

I don't know if you use your phone that way or not, but I sure do.

It's become my center for data fusion.

FWIW.
