iPhone 3GS to Droid X = bliss

I've been, an avid iPhone user for a few years now. But not your typical complacent user. I made that phone obey my every whim. This took plenty of convincing (aka jailbreaking/unlocking), but eventually I turned my practically sterile iPhone into a smartphone powerhouse. Toggles, customized themes, enhanced functionality (which phone company doesn't provide SOME sort of reminder mechanism for missed calls/texts etc!?). But as I said, I had to make a very big effort to get it to function as I say it should instead of how Apple says it should. Things were good, nay, GREAT.

Then I got a Droid X. Why I wasted my time with iOS I'll never know...

Android is far, FAR superior. Everything that I had to FORCE my iPhone to do, comes naturally and STOCK on the Android and DX.

Bliss. :)

im with ya i did the same switch and havent looked back. I actually had the EVO first but sprints network is a joke so it went back and the DX took its place been great ever since.

Yeah, but I'd take Sprint's service over AT&T's any day...

Though I will admit, if the iPhone ended up on Verizon's lineup it would sell out like mad. Probably even more so than the DX.

The simple fact is, the iPhone is made for the soccer mom next door, the hipster in that thrift store, that grandpa who got it for his 80th birthday...in other words: people who just want to use it without thinking and that is MANY average people. And in that respect, the phone is excellent and superior to the current iterations of the Android platform.

My only suggestion would be if Android had an "easy" skin, which made it overly simple to use common functions, for those millions of users described above.

But for the rest of us who know what's what...getting anythign other than the Android OS is not even an option.

I too switched from 3Gs and am very happy. The Droid X actually works great as a...phone. There's a new concept.

My wife also got a droid x and likes it better than her iphone 3g.

My only question is this...Is there a way for us to sync our calendars and contacts over the air, similar to MobileMe? Actually, Me didn't work very well (kept making new duplicate calendars in both our phones), but we were able to use iTunes to keep everything in sync.

Basically, I need to pick up stuff that my wife puts in her calendar to keep me organized.

I'm not entirely sure about contacts...but calandars for sure. If your wife and yourself both are using google's calandar online, then all you have to do is share your calendars online, and it will automatically populate your DX with all relevant dates and events both ways. So essentially your wife and yourself can add events on your phone and it will sync with your calandar online as well as post that information to your wifes calandar on her DX. It's a beautiful thing!

Haha, I went from a jailbroken 3G to 3GS and now ordered my DX last Sunday. I left because I couldn't stand att's horrible service. I'm glad there are others who feel the same way about the DX cuz that makes me more comfortable about the switch.

I'm with you on that one. Verizon has this country covered pretty damn well. There are spots of weak signal, but they are few and far between, unlike AT&T.

Also a side note, Google Navigation is AWESOME. Sooo slick. Just updated my Maps app through the Android Market and LOVE the updates.

This phone and OS keep getting better and better.

I think that everyone has owned or used an iphone before. It's like experimenting in college. You really don't know what's wrong or right, but after you experiment with the iphone you realize it's either a bad experience or not quite what all the buzz was about.

They you grow up, get more experience, and then make the smart choice that you should have made. Suddenly you are not a lemming anymore!

somebody should copy and email this thread to all the apple fanboys and steve jobs for saying that no one would leave the iphone for a gigantic phone (or whatever size pot shot he took)

i would pay to see the look on jobs' face if he were to see the numbers of people who have dropped the iphone for droidx and what will be droid2

I've been an iOS user since the first generation iPod Touch. At that time, I had a Palm Treo 700w, but after using the iPod Touch I knew I wanted to get an iPhone to have that capability with me wherever I go. Enter the iPhone 3G I bought next summer and used until 7/20/10, i.e. the day I discovered how much fun Android can be.

Don't get me wrong, I loved my iPhone and even swore by it at times, but it's just so ordinary and un-customizable. I've really enjoyed Android OS so far and expect that to only grow with Froyo. The 1-Click Root method for my X gave me the first taste of jailbreaking/rooting a phone, and it has been great so far as well. Especially free WiFi Tether. And no bloatware.

I had been waiting a while for Verizon to get iPhone...none of the Android phones really grabbed my interest, until Droid X showed up. Jumped on it on the day it came out, thinking I would switch to iPhone when it eventually came to Verizon. Now, there's no way I'd ever switch to iPhone...Android is so much better (My wife has 3GS, so I'm quite familiar with iPhone).

I switched from a 3G to the X... I tell my friends that I love tHat I can actually make calls and they laugh, but I'm not kidding. AT+T was so frustrating and now I can use my cell phone as a phone!

I find the android OS to be a little complicated...obviously the iPhone was simple to master...but android seems much more innovative and there are features like speech to text that just make Apple look like they are behind the curve...where's my droid...smart usual app....

Also, there are an awful lot of excellent apps that are free on android...not so on the iPhone...most of the useful apps cost money.

I'm making this phone my own and loving it...I thought thte size would be an issue. It was the only thing that made me hesitate but it doesn't bother me at all..looked at the incredible and it made me glad I had the larger screen.

Welcome! You fit right into the world of Android. Only, when you root, it's not illegal. :)

Welcome to the Android Family. :)

Thanks! Loving every second of it!

Everything can be done wirelessly on the x, even copying files back and forth to a pc. Honestly rooting (aka jailbreaking) hardly gets you anything on android because pretty much everything is allowed.

Honestly, I'm debating whether to root or not. But those damned Blockbuster and City ID apps are really annyoying me...I'll wait and see if 2.2 rolls out before I take the plunge.

Jobs' statement about the "hummers" is just ridiculous. The phone is big, yes, but is it outragous? No. It's one of those things where once you get use to it, you can never go back as many of you have said. Looking at my 3G screen is like looking at the face of my watch in comparison to the DX. No competition.

What's good about the DX is that it is big, but it's a bit slender. Unlike the EVO which is a bit fatter in the hands, the size of this phone comes in it's length. So width wise, although the screen is MUCH larger in both dimensions, the DX is only slightly larger than the iPhone when holding it because of its ridiculously thin frame.

I was worried about making the switch from the 3GS to the Droid X After reading these posts I know I can make the transition to DX with no regrets.

I just got my DX activated 8/1 and put my 3Gs aside. And there is a little learning curve, and I keep trying to hit the center home button that isn't there to wake it up and keep pushing the on the headphone jack to lock it! Besides that, it's so much easier to make it do what I want than it was with my iPhone. I had it jailbroken, but that just adds another layer of possible problems and difficulty. In fact, the day my DX arrived, I updated a 3rd party app on Rock and locked my phone up; it got stuck in a boot loop and I had to restore it, meaning starting the whole process of jailbreaking and setting up all over again. Last time, it took me a day and a half to get it back how I liked it! Shouldn't have that problem now!
