Who does want to pay taxes? and and it's not really proven that he's a liar from that report.

If the vessel isn't in the state, and under the states tax laws therefore don't require taxes to be paid then he's neither lied nor evaded any taxes.

The issue seems to be whether the vessel has visited the state at all, which is unproven, and hasn't been formally investigated.

Aside from this specific case; I have to say that the taxation rules seem kind of ridiculous if a state can charge taxes based on the use of a vessel just a few times. Would they charge taxes on cars that pass through the state? Seems like a very odd arrangement to me.

yes they would charge taxes on the cars..... as every state would....... if you lived in the state and owned a car that you only occasionally drove through the state... you would still have to have it registered and licensed (taxed) in that state.......

same as a boat........ no it hasnt been proven what he is doing...... but its pretty obvious what he tried to get away with...... he lives in the state....... the state law says if you are a resident and your boat travels in state waters within 6 months of purchase then you have to pay taxes ....... he intentionally is leaving his new boat out of state for over 6 months to have it "serviced"...... now common sense tells you that you didnt pay $7M for a new boat that needs over 6 months worth of service done to it.......

I agree nobody likes to pay taxes...... but for someone who has stated publicly many times that taxes are patriotic to then try to avoid them stinks of hypocrisy

Wow!? I used to taxes being paid where the thing taxed actually is, so if you owned a car in one place it would get registered and taxed etc. there, but you could still use it to visit your(not it's) home place.

Which to my mind makes more sense, it seems like just a fleecing exercise to tax something that isn't there.

This I understand a little more, but if the boat is registered, housed and taxed elsewhere it stills seems a little harsh and opportunist.

I'll defer to you better knowledge here, I can't say I've noted this guys views much at all, and if he's being a hypocrite, particularly while holding such office then he deserves some scrutiny.

He's a liar in the fact that he said he was going to use it in Rhode Island. Then he said it was there for repairs....yeah six months of repairs to a $7 million boat so he can avoid the tax.

But isn't the boat in use in Rhode Island at the moment? That would seem to be the truth, not a lie.

The only suggestion that the boat's been used in Massachusetts has been the word of an anonymous person without any detail or evidence it seems.
