Droid Doesn't - Not Yet at Least! - VIDEO OUT

Very nice! That supports exactly what I was saying..... wait a jerk minute....

If you have a long commute into work, how is a tv out helping you?

How is a tv out helping you when shopping at the mall?

hmmmmmm

I have a Pioneer AVIC 700 head unit in my car.

The AVIC is a 7" touch screen NAV system w/TV-in ports.

I'm not always the driver, when I go places, and even if I am, being able to hear the game is better than missing it all together.

The TP2, my original choice, has 800 x 480 resolution, which would be 1:1 pixel mapping with my head unit.

Closest Outlet mall is 1.5 hours away...and the others are "out of state".

SlingMobile + Slingbox = watching your cable/sat/DVR service on your mobile phone in HD, or preconfigured res.

So, why not get the TV tuner for the AVIC ??
you could get at least audio by using a simple phono to rca, and connect it to the audio in for the AVIC.. still gonna be screwed for video, less you actually watch it (as a passenger) on the droid

I was just looking at the PS3 cable on the internet, as I was (hoping) that there was a direct way to hookup the DROID via a mini-usb/component out cable to the TV...

"breakmyfootoff" - you have hooked a DROID up through the PS3, or just using the cable?
i'm pretty sure he's saying that he's hooking the droid up to the ps3, which is then hooked up to the tv. just like you can hook the droid up to a computer and then hook the computer up to the tv. i don't think that's what you want though.

Then I guess you have never owned a vcr, dvd, or dvr. Welcome to 1975.... The droid gets beat by betamax.

TVs are here to stay, and have every imaginable way to plug stuff into them - component out, RF, composite, SVIDEO, HDMI... HMM, guess the motorola guys were asleep at the wheel here.

Well dont remember any vcr,dvd etc that made phone call or watched youtube or got on the internet so not really a fair comparison i think.
Yes it would be a nice feature, I had it on my omnia and never really used it, its easier to just push play on my laptop (even connected to tv) or just play the dvd than it is to hook up phone to watch on tv, plus using it that way i couldnt use my phone when it was hooked up so what good was it then...
Anyway its nice for once in awile but no way a deal breaker for me

And.. ??
Composite video requires 2..
A usb webcam (with audio and video and power for the device) has 4 connectors right ??

Doh, forgot about 3.5mm...looks like N900 will be using this:

Are there different A/V 3.5mm cables for the iPod? I heard that some off-brand ones don't work. But I've also heard of chips installed in-line, so that only Apple cables work. For whatever reason, the "Pioneer branded cable" for iPod connection to the Pioneer AVIC had many issues. When AVIC owners used Apple branded cables, the problems subsided.

Also, for the 3.5mm A/V cables, are some of the mini-plugs gapped a little differently on the pin?

I'm not ready to call this a troll post but geesh if you buy a device that comes with a contract, and you are smart enough to find this forum, maybe you should find and read the spec sheet.

Buying a device that clearly doesn't have a feature you want listed and then complaining about it, then inferring others that don't agree have IQ problems is pretty lame. It defies logic and therefore logic says he doesn't own one.

I personally like to have my phone close by in case it umm rings. I wouldn't let my kids play with my phone to watch videos if I ever find a wife that is content with my cooking/cleaning needs.

I think I'll go buy a car tomorrow that doesn't have BT and then go to their forum to bitch about it.

Sorry to make this sound like a troll post, but there are a lot of unfriendly people on this forum. I think the droid just needs an app and a micro-usb to composite video cord to hook up to the tv and play video. I was hoping someone here would know more - not just try to convince me it is ok this phone won't (can't?) do this. Oh, and I did ask the sales person and the did say it does everything the iphone does, and more. People should know about this limitation.
- if I read this a week ago, I probably would have held off the purchase...

However, in the first post you said you had "done a ton of research"
Now, if a commercial or any other documentation said "droid does video out" then yeah, i'd be pissed too, but nothing states that..

You listened to a SALES person, that told you what you wanted to hear.. wow.. that's because, it's how he makes a living !! You should always be smarter than your salesperson. Have enough sense to ask a salesperson a question that you already know the answer to, just to see if he knows what he's talking about.. I remember on "launch day" i heard a SALES person tell a customer that Blackberry does push email, and the Droid phones don't... That sales person was immediately flagged as a tool.. Then i had another sales person ask ME how to sync contacts, and how to add contacts to gmail... She seemed amazed that when i turned on my droid (for the first time) and added my gmail info that all my contacts appeared within seconds.. And this phone was purchased a week after it launched..

Now, in the sales peoples' defense they can't know every feature for every phone..

and yes, some people in here are unfriendly.. Half of us reading this post are shaking our heads going "huh, really, is this a must have feature on a PHONE ?" and the other half of us are saying to ourselves "man, i hope this kid gets out of his moms basement sometime soon"

The phone has to have the necessary hardware and software to make it work, I'm pretty sure the Droid does not have the hardware and certainly does not have the software....so just randomly connecting cables from other devices won't work and could damage the phone. If you really need this feature, you may want to look at another device. But I do agree that it would have been a cool feature to have assuming it didn't alter any of the other specs.

I have one of those for the ipod and my video camcorder - i tried it - no video out. I don't think the Droid 3.5 jack is a TRRS, just a TRS jack. I think it only does headphones/speakers, not headphones/speakers and video? Anyone?
That is correct, have tested myself.

Ok guys, the hardware IS CAPABLE. Please read my thread which I have had for a while, which answers a lot of the questions on here. To sum things up on it, we are waiting for the Droid to be rooted to find out if the MicroUSB or the 3.5mm Jack can be hacked. The Texas Instruments board that the Droid has (OMAP™ 3 Processors - OMAP3430) support TV-out, but the meanies at Motorola are well.... meanies.

After reading the postes regarding the Video Out question, I was struck by the limited imagination of many of the responses about watching a movie on the DROID. There is much more to share or watch than a movie.

Photos and YOUTUBE come first to mind. YOUTUBE has many videos that are great to share with a friend or a group if the DROID had the ability for video out. Using a notebook computer or a "netbook" for that matter is not always a good solution.

Riding on a subway or on an airplane, computers are just way, way to big - and take to long to boot. We live in a very mobile socity, and as such we often like to do more with less . . . less bulk. Mostly, being able to hook the DROID to a TV would be cool! Way Cool! Next to "sex," "cool" sells!

Teaching a class, and having the ability to hook the DROID to a TV, Monitor, or Projector would be a great asset. Not to mention cool. If a robot can crash through a brick wall, is it to much to expect video output? I want everything, and I want it in a small package, and I want it cool!

I have the DROID because I like to support my own "home team" Motorola is an american company - the inventors of the cellular phone. Verizon has the best network - together I should be able to do everything an iPhone does and much much more.

Motorola - if you are listening . . . Great Job, but I want more! Motorola needs to beat "iAnything" every time. Keep up the good work!

Droid is not a phone. It has a more processing power and memory than a home pc sold 7 years ago. It's a handheld computer.
Thirteen years ago, my 233 MHz, 32 MB of RAM, 4MB ATI Rage Pro, 6 GB hard drive PC could totally...do nothing my Droid does.

However, that doesn't change the fact that my Droid can do almost everything minus one or two things. Nothing is perfect and every choice has both pluses and minuses. You chose the Droid, meaning you may lack some things that the iPhone has, but you gain some things, if not a lot more things IMO, that the iPhone denies you.

There is always something that engineers/software developers miss (I speak as one), and even if they do try to squeeze in such features, they come at a cost. A cell phone can only be so big, after all.

Still, the resolution of a video on a cell phone would be too horrible to play on a TV. Hell, the resolution of a video meant for a computer is too horrible to play on a TV. The only things I would ever play on my TV are full, non-ripped DVD movies and old VHS tapes (I need to convert these to DVD soon).
