Perplexing problem moving from WM6.1 to EVO

Maybe I missing something easy here but I have been using my Windows Mobile 6.1 phone for a couple of years. I don't sync it to my PC. I just use the cloud (Microsoft MobileME) for my backup.

How do I get my contacts that only exist on the phone to Gmail in preparation for a move to the EVO???

Follow these instructions to set up a Google Sync with your Windows Mobile phone and then it will be very easy to have your contacts and calendar transfer to your new EVO on its first sync.

To set up Google Sync on your Windows Mobile device, please follow the steps below.

Important Note: Make sure that you have backed up any Contacts and Calendars from your phone to your computer before proceeding. Getting Started

1. Open the Active Sync application on your device's home screen.
2. Click the link Set up your device to sync with it.
3. Enter m.google.com as the server address.
4. Ensure that the SSL option is checked.


Sign In to Google Account

5. Click Next.
6. Enter your full Google Account email address as the User name.
7. Enter your Google Account password as the Password.
8. Leave the Domain field empty. If your device requires you to enter a domain name, enter google.
9. Click Next.
10. CheckContacts, Calendar, or Email, depending on which you'd like to sync.
11. Click Finish.




12. Press the Sync softkey on the left to synchronize.

You've now set up Google Sync for your Windows Mobile device.

I wish I could do this. ;-( Everytime I try and sync the phone to my Windows 7 x64 with Office 2010 I get an error :

Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run MS Outlook and set it as the default mail client

I already set it as the default client. I think my problem is X64 related by what I have read... Reloading another machine just to sync is a PITA.


Bottom line: I guess my problem is Windows/Officex64 related. Crap....

Holy Crap Boliviano if this is as easy as it advertises it looks like just what I need.

Maybe I'll just scrap trying to get it synced to my PC.. Woohooo.

Yes that is a documented problem. Here's one discussion: Outlook 2010 and Windows Mobile Device Center on x64 platform : It's not Outlook fault !

Probably this doesn't help, but I'll toss it out there.

If your desktop app supports exporting all of your contacts into a single vCard file, then all you have to do with that is log in to your GMail acct on the web, choose Contacts and import that vCard file. Will even retain all group relationships.

So far as I know, Outlook won't do that. But the OP mentions using "Microsoft MobileME" - if that's using MobileMe for syncing, and you can access your MobileMe account on the web, then you can create that vCard file from your MobileMe contacts.

You could always just use PIMbackup (it saves as csv), and export your contacts, then import them into Gmail. your phone will then automatically sync.

You know, I wondered about that - my success with csv files for that has been touch and go - and I hadn't tried one from Outlook.

Thats exactly what I did. PIMbackup exported to a csv file. Then I imported that into gmail on the pc, everything was perfect. Then turned the Evo on, and had all my contacts in less than a minute.

No I wasn't talking about syncing with Outlook. Setup Google Sync on your Windows Mobile Phone. It is the easiest way to do it and it works just like MyPhone. Here is the link for the instructions:

No worries. Glad it worked out and wait until you get your hands on The EVO..... It is mind blowing
