I've heard if you use excessive amounts of data (over 5gig) it may raise a flag, but I think this is more rumor than anything else. Especially with streaming audio/video apps more common these days.

Unlimited Data really is unlimited although tethering does violate VZWs Terms of Service. If you get could you could be subject to a lot of fees. I have never actually heard of someone getting caught other than a friend of a friend of a friend type stories.

I have been tethering for 6 or 7 months although I do it pretty rarely.

For a couple years now (TouchPro with winmo before the Droid).

Although I'm not as excessive as others, I have gone as high as ~6gig one month. I have heard of people going as high as 30gig in the past with no repurcussions, but I don't believe everything I read on the internet.

As OMJ said, it is against Verizon's ToS. I don't think they can fine you, however, but more likely threaten to cancel your service or coerce you into a tethering plan.

No they can not tell if you are tethering, but they can infer from you data usage and they will charge you for it. Especially now that they have tethering plans.

I agree with everyone else, good rule of thumb is to stay under 5GB/month.

I use the 'My Verizon' app from the market to monitor my usage.

Now this might all change very soon when VZW follows AT&T with their tiered data plans... Verizon switching to AT&T-style limited data plans later this month? -- Engadget. However, more recent rumors say this tiered plan will not affect 3G but will be implemented on their new LTE 4G.

This article just came out. Verizon customers use an average of ~450mg of data a month. That's higher than ATT's iPhone users, for reference.

"(He) speculates this difference is because Android users tend to be more hard-core data users, whereas the iPhone may be used more by casual users who like the phone because it's cool.

They CAN tell if you're tethering. IF they really wanted to look at everyones apps, but they don't. I called them with a problem once and the guy read back to me all my apps...even ones I installed manually with the computer. It was scary really.

PDAnet is an application, not a plan. Either way, I do not THINK they can see what devices are connected to your phone via that PDAnet app or any other tethering app, they just see the data that is being transfered. This is why most people say to keep the data below 5GB/month. Because mobile phones normally (if in mobile mode) get directed to the mobile version of the site, if available, which is less to download. Whereas a laptop connected to your phone will pull down the full site which is more data being transferred.

Yeah they definitely can. But theyd never go through EVERYONES apps. As long as you don't raise a red flag I think you're fine.
