One of the saddest days of my life

Whilst on holiday last week I had my Desire stolen right from under my nose in a crowd of people at the Benicassim festival from my buttoned up trouser pocket, man that really ruined my holiday and I totally miss my phone. Hopefully my insurance will sort a new one out for me so this is really just a cautionary tale, if you can get A)insurance for your phone, B)a case for your Desire which you can tie to your wrist. Enjoy your phones and please look after them.... and if I catch the scum sucking piece of s**t thief that stole it I'll cut all his bloody fingers off

Same happened to a friend of mine at an airport. On hearing that I immediately tested several apps to recover your phone if lost or stolen. good luck with the insurance. My mate bought a new one a week later.

WaveSecure seems the best, but it comes at a price. Currently have sim checker lite for sim swap notification and location.Also have Lookout that offers safety, security & tracking. I have a lock pattern that generally secures and much as a mobile can be secured. WaveSecure does do a remote wipe though, but I think it is $19.99 per year subscription.

TBH yes, I had driven 1400 miles to go to a festival with intention of seeing one particular band and it was during watching that band I was pick pocketed, they also stole my wallet with my holiday money and debit cards/credit cards driving licence in so I had no way of getting any money out of bank for fuel money home, food for the rest of the week etc. The phone also had my sat nav on which I had totally relied onto get there, a whole load of photos of my kids and stuff... Have you ever had anything stolen from you in that way, it's quite personal and violating, and yes I have a pretty good life thanks.

That sucks, i have insurance and just came across lookout last night, i love it, not only did it pin point my phone to just a few feet, if you loose your phone somewhere you can send it a remote instruction to "SCREAM" and even if the volume is right down it will still work (have yest to try it with the phone set on silent), and boy it was loud, the only way you can stop it from Screaming is to turn it on then off, so at least if you have a look on it then the person has to turn it off and then try and work out what the lock code is.

Hi Pete, just looked at it on the market, and there are a few people commenting that it drains your battery. What is your experience with lookout and battery?

Well to be honest, ive only been using it for a day,but so far so good, i have turned off the automatic back up, and ive set the virus scan only to scan weekly, i havent seen any major drain on the battery, the only thing i suppose may well drain it is that you have to have the GPS switched on to use the locate feature but to be honest like i said i havent noticed any big difference, i would give it a try mate and if it caused problems then uninstall, but just adjust the program settings.

Im using Lookout too. Only the Phone finding & Antivirus parts - not using the online backup, I'll do my own.

Not noticed any real impact on battery as I leave GPS switched on all the time anyway.

You can text your phone to turn the volume up and ring for up to up to 5 minutes.

Also, you can text it and providing the gps is on, it will give you the gps location of your phone.

Guess you didn't read my other reply, wait till you been robbed in a foreign country with no money due to your wallet being stolen with all the ready cash you have and no way of getting other money due to your bank cards being in your stolen wallet, with your personal emails and text messages and photos for which ever scum stole your phone to read then and tell me how happy you are!!

The point of the thread was to warn people of the dangers of how easy it is to be pick pocketed and maybe arm yourself against it by making sure your phone was secure ie a case which you can tie to your wrist whilst in a crowd, having insurance and maybe software to help find it... and no it's not just a phone with access to emails, text messages, facebook accounts, photos etc!

i think thats how it works, as i have gps switched on but no gps symbol is shown in the notification area, it only uses it when you activate the find phone software from the lookout website.

I have my GPS switched on all the time... Just because its switched on it doesn't mean its active. It gets activated when its needed by whatever software is requesting it.

On my phone i have wifi, mobile internet & gps turned on all the time & i get anywhere from 2 - 4 days battery.
If i really hammer the phone, like nigh on constant usage i can run it down in 24 hours.

I didn't say it was of anyone else's saddest days, and nor did I say it was my saddest day maybe I should have titled it 'one of my worst days' and yes my father died 14months ago, and several close friends, 3 funerals last year alone... what has that got to do with it??

it was also meant to be a bit tongue in cheek, as I presumed everyone loved their Desires and it's like losing a friend, I guess not.

I would be the same as you m8, but then like you say its like losing a friend.
It does after take a while to customize them how you want & then there are all the personal photos too.

Your first post on the forum is that hideously inappropriate remark? That's a pretty nasty question to ask someone, especially in response to a thread title on a forum. Try thinking before you type something.



Anyway, you can get cases with clips that attach to either a belt or a belt loop. Personally I keep the phone in a case in my pocket - With my hand. There's never been a better reason to keep a hand in your pocket than making sure nobody steals your phone!

A brand new black version desire has just been delivered thanks to my insurance company, really quick service well impressed with Barclays mobile insurance the only draw back it's an orange branded one when mine was an unbranded one. Does rooting the desire unbrand it or is there something else I have to do, as I may as well do it now before I start to fill it with apps and stuff again.

If you just want it debranded use the goldcard method

If you have the IMEI number then be sure to report it to your carrier if in the UK and then it will be blacklisted from all UK networks. As for insurance, I got a replacment desire and then managed to get it lost/stolen within 48 hours; no doubt the insurance company won't liek that and will mess me around. Best of luck with your claim!
