This does not mean we will get it in September. It means the Galaxy will.

Then they have to tweak it for the AT&T Captivate, then send it to AT&T.

Then AT&T has to cripple and bloat it, drag their feet for a month or two, weasle some more money from subscribers, etc, before sending it out to customers probably December or later.

rooting will not prevent you from getting OTA updates. However, flashing a new ROM will. Personally I'm not holding out much hope for Sammy's update. I'll probably load Cyanogen onto my phone long before AT&T gets this into our hands.

From my understanding (mainly what I've read), you can get the updates but you don't get the notification. This means that instead of getting a pop-up you'll have to go to the manual update checker and use that.

PPL need to learn to read. This was a UK announcement - all carriers in the UK will get the update in Sept. US is far away, and AT&T will probably push it out the last of the 4 big US carriers.

To me, people need to stop asking about froyo. It's coming, it's announced and confirmed, that's great.

The question people need to be asking Samsung, so we can get them on the record committed to it now, is will you release a Gingerbread update for the phone as long as the hardware is capable of supporting it. The OS is only 2-3 months from being unveiled if Google sticks to their time table, and if the rumors are true it'll be a much bigger overhaul than 2.1-2.2 is.

So yeah, unless we want our phones to be outdated before the end of the year, we need to start making a push as a community to get a commitment from Samsung to support not just the OS that was released 4 months ago, but also the much bigger one that's right around the corner.

Think it was closer to 2 months ago for the N1, and yes, that's about when it hit phones, but Google unveiled the OS and released the code earlier than that.

You do have a bit of a point about the Gingerbread release, though, especially since Gingerbread will be released probably about the same time that Froyo makes it to our Captivates...

You are right though. I would hate to just see this phone get ONE update. I don't know of any phones that have a faster processor or more RAM so I think it's pretty safe to assume that our phones would be compatible with Gingerbread. Now I guess it's up to Samsung/ATT to get us the update... or do it ourselves.

Yes, but unless Samsung threw in the kitchen sink with their source code today, we still won't see Gingerbread unless Samsung leaks it or releases it first.

Having source code available means that chefs can cook ROMs to their hearts' content, which means that as soon as Gingerbread's available, someone'll prolly cook up a custom ROM based on it. Very much looking forward to seeing what the end of the year brings.

I personally don't care if AT&T releases froyo, there will be custom ROMs available before they are ready to release it anyway without all the crap that they put in it.

Yes, but they'll also need all the proprietary junk to get it to work correctly, and it's not known at this point if they released it. I'm just not holding my breath to see Gingerbread on this.
