I believe I made a costly mistake

I bought a Nexus One 1.5 months ago with a plan from T-Mobile. I paid the AT&T early termination fee.

I love the phone in every respect except for one, and its becoming very bothersome. I now want to buy the Samsung Captivate on AT&T. AT&T will reverse their early termination fee's, but I'll get a $200 charge from TMO, and I understand Google will bite me too. Anyone know how much?

I'm trying to find a way to get out without losing my shirt, or at least to minimize the sting. Figuring I can eBay the phone.

Any ideas?

have fun with an att controlled, htc sensei, samsung ui, samsung poor rep for updates captivate. I would never change my nexus for that phone, while the captivate/vibrate sits on 2.2 until march i would have already had gingerbread for 3 months

The reason I bought the Nexus One was that it comes with stock Android. 2.2 rocks, and I really don't like any manufacturer crud on top of the OS.

But... There was one aspect of the N1 that I thought might bother me, and it is bothering me, quite a bit. The screen is too small. I can deal with it being a bit small, but I read a lot on the phone and gripping it just does not feel right. It's too narrow.

The Captivate is just about right. I would have bought it had it been available when I was on ATT.

Now the dilemma is if I switch to the phone for is size, I wonder if the crud on top of the OS will bother me.

Damn you G, for not building a Nexus Two with a large display!

i am very happy with the size actually... it fits perfect in your pocket without a huge buldge and it doesnt look like your carrying a glock 9mm on your waist when in its case. If i wanted a big screen i just pack my netbook and use my nexus for FREE hotspot!

For me there is a subtle difference between too small, just right, and too big.

iPhone 4 = fail OMG a small screen like that with a limited OS and the me-too's are buying them. What a great marketing machine Apple has.

Nexus One = close, but not quite there. Excellent in EVERY respect, but screen just a little tired being as small as it is.

EVO 4G = close, but not quite there. Borderline too big. HTC sense the deciding factor, no thanks.

Samsung Vibrant = fail. Umm no thanks. If I wanted a phone that looked like an iPhone, I'd call up Steve Jobs and buy one from him.

SamSung Captivate = close, but closer than N1? Great form factor and size. Yeah it has crud on top of OS, but looks better than HTC crud.

Yep, a Nexus Two with 4 or 4.1 inch display would be nice.

I wanted advise on getting out and into the Captivate the cheapest way possible. If there is a way. If its too big a hit, I'll wait a year and see what dual processor 4 inch phones are on the market at that time.

You can certainly try ebaying your phone, you might get a decent amount for it, but with newer phones out there I am not 100% sure about that. So far you are sitting at $400 ($200 fees from tmo, $200 for the new phone) for .3" more screen space. Seems like a lot of money. But if you need the extra real estate then pull the trigger and go ahead.

I called Google. Its not that bad. 200 to T-Mobile and 150 more to G. So basically I end up paying the full price of the phone. Looks like they go for ~450 on eBay. Even if only 400, the overall loss is not out of this world.

Touch decision.

I'll take a closer look at the Samsung. Too bad the 3G band does not work on TMO, or I'd just buy it cash and unlock it. Greatly prefer to stay on TMO. 3G on AT&T is so much slower than HPSA+

Then go for it, the great thing about android is that we have a choice about our hardware, and that choice allows us to pick a phone that fits our needs as close as possible. No one phone for us.

3.7 inch display small? well, I guess it depends on how big you are! For me 3.7" is perfect, but bigger would be too much, definitely.

Why not be honest w the guy, Back in the day yes the N1 was supreme Running a 1ghz snapdragon. But now that snapdragon is Inferior to the Hummingbird that the Captivate and Vibrant come with. I am sure you have seen the Bench tests and the Videos to support this.
And yes you might or you will get gingerbread before us, But you won't have the graphics or the power to run it efficiently.

why not be honest with yourself? Snapdragon inferior to the hummingbird? Could be, but not proved on such benchmarks, cos the GPU power prevails there, and yes, the Galaxy S family has a much more powerful GPU, which for a mobile phone, personally, I find it useless anyway.

Samsung is only interested in making and selling phones, not updating/improving existing phones. Another problem I soon had with Samsung was the phone's calibration. Within 6 months of having the phone, I experienced calibration problems. I later found out that Samsung is aware of the problem since it has been reported to them many times but little is done to fix it. My advice to you is, stay away from SAMSUNG.

if you think for a second that google wont tweak gingerbread so it will run smoothly on the nexus then your nuts! I made no mention of the processor. while yes the hummigbird is a "little" bit better its not enought for me to give up all the freedom of vanilla android for such a controlled device. i simply weighed the options and i like what i have better right now. this may change in november when something bigger and better is supposed to drop. but if it has all the same crap as the samsung i wont get it. i dont even like htc sense. The next phone i get will also be vanilla or at least the option to disable the ui

Sanity Now. Or was that serenity? Had a poker game and a few beer. I think I better step back and re-evaluate my spending patterns and stick with the N1 for year or so. Yeah, it would be nice if it was perfect but no phone is, and as much as I rely on it for organizing my world, it probably doesn't get all that much better. Google did a good job. I think I'll stick with it for awhile. Oh, and its good that AT&T was closed by the time I left the game. ....fight the feeling bra.

and the important lesson learned... DON'T buy subsidised...

as for the Captivate... I would wait untill it has 2.2 it's gonna be out on September if Samsung can keep it's promise. Then see how the software is and all the 2.1 bugs it has currently.

Then decide if it's worth it.

Snapdragon Vs Hummingbird(A4).. snapdragon looses. BUT if you think Gingerbread 3.0 will run slower on N1 because of that you're wrong. You don't even know how much it will change and what google will do and you are talking about that Snapdragon can't cut it... wtf..

I certainly won't replace my N1 for a looong time. I don't game on my phone. And if you don't either.. you best stick to N1. no reason to pay the termination fees.

no advice other than selling it on ebay- i think you could get over $400 for it which isn't bad.

but if you really want the galaxy s phone, why not get the samsung vibrant? as far as i know it's basically the same as the captivate. i was considering the captivate, so i read a lot about them both, and played with both in the store. they felt basically the same to me. at least that way you wouldn't be paying an early termination fee to t-mobile.

Nexus One will become OFFICIAL google developer phone.. IT MAKES NO SENSE of Android 3.0 NOT running on it...

Android 3.0 is comming out at the end of this year as far as I know of.

The Captivate.. ACTUALY the whole Galaxy S line of phones have hummingbird so don't talk about just the one phone. And because it has newer faster components that doesn't mean it's better in a whole view...
