Who has rooted their X?

I rooted mine, the best thing for me is wifi tethering. Also removing the bloatware is nice too, but i put it back today just incase we get an OTA soon I don't get a bricked phone.

The Droid X is my first Android phone and I rooted it just because it can be rooted. I like being able to backup the contents, take screen shots, wifi tethering.

So if you have a rooted phone, and an OTA comes up, isn't that like upgrading a jailbroken iphone? It saves everything (messages, apps, etc) and overwrites the jailbreak/root with the updated OS?

Depends on what is removed. We know for a fact that if BackupAssistant is removed and you do a factory reset your phone will essentially be bricked. Also if GoogleTalk is removed the market no longer works. I would just rather have everything back in place so if I get an OTA and don't have a chance to ignore it all I will lose is root for a few days instead of a bricked phone.

I've been strongly considering rooting my X this past week. I don't care about removing the apps really since I've already hidden them in the app drawer and the phone has 8GB of onboard storage I couldn't fill if I tried. I just want a better backup solution and the wifi tethering would be very useful. I haven't taken the time to read up on the ramifications of rooting should something go wrong.

Main value I got from it :

1- Remove unwanted, preinstalled apps
2- Free WiFi thethering
3- Lastly (& most important to me actually) taking screen shots

As a somewhat related question, is the "Free Wi-Fi Tethering" that is enabled by rooting the phone the same thing as having Verizon's 3G Mobile Hotspot pay service?

If so, then I am totally rooting this phone tonight.

It is essentially the same thing, there are a couple different tether apps that basically turn your phone into a wifi hotspot but I am not sure what the restriction is for the number of devices that can connect, I know Verizons wifi is 5 devices and $20 extra for limited data, that's the only difference. It is really nice to have when you need it!

Yes it is third party apps, they need root access to enable the tethering over wifi. Before I rooted I used pdanet which will do tethering over usb or bluetooth, but you need root access for any wifi tethering unless you want to pay Verizon for it.

I really don't get the major hate of bloatware. It's been on every phone since the beginning of time. So I have a few extra Icons in the app drawer big whooop! I just ignore them and that's not hard as they seem to blend right in with the other 200 I have in there Besides I think its easier and safer to just freeze the app with TiBackup than removing them, which has been proven to be very dangerous.

What I have issues with though is bloatware like CityId that is going to run out of its trail period and nag me to upgrade with no option to uninstall it if I decide I don't want it. That's' just wrong.

Been there, done that, undid that so I won't have problems with froyo, don't miss it.

Probably the only root app I really used was AdFree Android, which I think is still working. I think it just needed root to install.

Adfree yeah......I like the blank boxes instead of an ads.lol Frankly I think the ads looks better than an empty blank box on my screen. It makes me think something is missing all the time.

At least the ads are targeted and meaningful to me and my area. I've actually clicked on a few which is something I've NEVER done before.
