USB Tethering Works with WiFi

While USB tethering over 3G/4G networks doesn't work unless you pay for the $30/mo hotspot feature (which I still cannot get Sprint to admit is a stupid name since I don't want a hotspot, only tethering, but I digress), you can tether and use the phone's WiFi connection.

Why would you want to? Well, I have a laptop that requires a USB dongle and now I have one less thing to carry. OK, not the best reason, but I found it interesting.

I don't claim it's terribly useful.

:D

Usb tether is free. Hotspot isn't. You can't tether while in 3g from what I understand.

There is some question as to how long the free usb tether will be free.
I was ready to cancel my Hotspot service in lieu of the free usb tether to 4G but called Sprint tech support to check. I was told that sometime in the next week or so, the tether would cease to work and I would probably see an error 1012 on the device.

Once the dust settles on this Froyo update process, I will look into options for saving the $30.00/month hotspot fee. But either way, the $30.00 monthly service fee is not a deal breaker.

This is a misconception.

Unless you use something like PDAnet, the HTC built-in tethering is not free and not available unless you pay for the hotspot option. I believe there was a hole that let 4G users get it for free, but that's been plugged (or will be, Sprint tells us) so back to using a third-party app or rooting to get it from the OS.

I updated my Evo to the Froyo 2.2 on the 29th and lost my wireless tether/unrevoked3 so I stayed up most of the night messing with it trying to get any tether without the $30 fee.

After a few hours I finally got the USB Tether to work. I first went to Mobile Apps and Games for Blackberry, Windows Mobile, Android, Symbian, and Palm | Handango and purchase an app called Tether Plus for $6.99 one-time fee, dragged it onto my SD card via usb disk drive and install. Make sure to have Unknown Sources checked in your application settings so that this app will install. Follow the direction it gives you because you have to go to a link on your computer the download driver and .exe file. Unfortunately this will only work for computer that are 32-bit and lower. I have Windows 7, 64-bit.

Sooooo, I searched and searched and found a computer driver for an app called Easy Tether (didn't buy this one because it cost just a hair more $9.99, there's a free version but I found that it didn't load a lot of websites) which has both the 32-bit and 64-bit and downloaded the 64-bit...taa daa...it works. Here's the link Download EasyTether drivers

All you do after all of this is...open up the Launch tetherplus.exe on your computer...connect your Evo via USB and check Charge Only....right click on your tetherplus icon in your taskbar which actually says TP...and click connect via android (HT077HL03713). The #s in the parenthesis maybe different per each phone...not sure.

Anyways...there you have it. I am online now using my Tether Plus App through my USB charge only on my EVO and it's hella fast!! BTW...my USB tether is working with 3G...I don't have 4G in my area.

EasyTether probably didn't load a lot of websites bc it's the free version (no https sites).

Yeah, I figured as much but thought I could do better than the $9.99 for the full version of EasyTether. So I went to Handango and after the 15% discount, I paid $5.49 I think for Tether Plus. But I still have to use the application for EasyTether on my laptop because TetherPlus do not have a driver for 64-Bit processor.

True. I'm gonna have to see if it works with Mac. PDANET worked fine, but for $30, not sure if I want to spring for the full version.

i just installed froyo on my evo tonight and was trying to see what tether options i had available... and to my dissapointment no free wifi anymore and no free usb tether over 3g/4g...

so i turned wifi on my evo and then connected my evo to my pc and clicked usb tether... and BAM all of a sudden i got a connection on my pc... getting great speeds im actually connected on it now..

this is great for me... cause i tend to hook my pc up to my 42 inch tv in bedroom and there is no internet connection or wifi on pc.... and since i have a laptop and a wifi router now i can just hook up my evo to pc when in bedroom and have internet and everything!! i love hooking up my pc to tv since my pc has hdmi out and watching movies and dvds through pc is great!!

pc is pointless in room with no internet though... nut now that i found that i can do this.. i am stoked!!
ps..
was going to start a thread about this... but then thought let me search first.. dont want another kitten to die!! lol
