Is 1gb per month enough for HTC Desire?

Hello,

I am new to the forum. I have searched for a similar topic so apologies if this has already been tackled elsewhere.

I have just purchased an unlocked HTC Desire which I should take delivery of next week. I didn't want to get tied to an 18 or 24 month contract so opted for the unlocked phone. I am interested in the

this depends solely on how much you plan to do on the internet.......if you plan to stream music all the time or youtube a lot....... d/l a lot of things etc ......... then no 1Gb isnt gonna stretch very far......... its all a matter of your personal useage habits

for instance my wife never streams anything...... she only d/l things occassionally..... and she uses her browser moderately.......... she averages about 50Mb a month

I on the other hand use mine what I consider average or slightly above average........ I probably hit youtube once or twice a month...... I rarely stream...... I surf a lot ..... and I d/l a few movies now and then....... my billing cycle is about 2weeks in right now and Im already at 1.8Gb....... last month I ended at I think 2.9Gb (d/l movies uses a lot of data).....

you have to bare in mind as well that every app you have syncing in the background is constantly using data........ so if you have weatherbug set to update every 15 mins....... then every 15 mins youre going use a stream of data..... even if you only physically check weatherbug once a week..........

your best bet is to use your phone exactly how you intend to for a full month...... then check to see what your useage was

So they allow you to go over 1GB a month? I thought with the fair usage policy they monitor usage and then start restricting you if you go over.

I have a Nexus one so pretty similar phones. I wouldn't worry about stuff syncing that will be pittance compared to anything else you might be doing. I use the internet moderately and stream music for about an hour every weekday on my way home from work. I get up to about 700mb per month. IMO a GB is fine, as long as you download anything big, e.g. movies on your pc and copy it to your phone or use a wireless connection while you download big things.

I dont use the same service you are describing......... I have unlmited data

I was simply trying to give you some examples of useage for different people......... I know some people that use 5-6Gb a month or more with their unlimited.......

the point being that its a matter of your own personal use......... only you can determine how much you will use in a month........

for me 1Gb would never be enough........ for my wife 1Gb would be enough for a year

How do you get unilmited data? I thought no-one did that anymore or is it still on older contracts?

i am also with t-mobile and have 1gb fair usage policy.

it does depend on what you use the internet for.

i have mine syncing, facebook =1hr, news = 4hrs, weather =3hr
then there google and emails.

i use the internet moderately but when i am at home i am connected using wifi.

i have used total 56mb so far since 7th july so i can say that syncing doesn't use much at all.

download 3g watchdog and it will monitor the usage for you.

Ahh, that sounds similar to how I intend to use it and reassuring. You have touched on some points I was going to make in another post. So it is therefore possible to save on your monthly 3g usage by switching to Wifi and downloading via that? Also, I assume one could also use a VPN at work and save data that way also.

Thanks, again more reassurance! :) So sorry to be dumb, but I have never owned a smartphone before. You can turn off the 3g connection and switch to wifi instead thus saving on your 3g use for when you are truly mobile.

Just want to say if your going with t mobile get the 3gb cap because they throttle the data speed on the 1gb cap. I was getting a shocking 357kb per sec. So I confronted t mobile about this and a long story short I'm now getting a pretty steady 2mb after going up to the 3gb cap. T mobile are ****s for ripping off there 1gb users. Just a heads up for people thinking of joining t mobile

The only reason I'm with T-Mobile is because they were the first to get the Desire and I'm impatient.
As soon as my contract ends I'm going with someone else.

Terry_Gardener (or anyone)

You say that you have FB syncing every hour. Do you actually receive any form of notification from FB of new postings/actions?

I don't receive anything. No "F" icon on the top bar, no mails. Nothing. The only way to check if there is anything new, is to go into the FB app.

I DO have FB set up to sync every hour too.

Cheers

i think the answer to the original question really depends on your usage.

i got my phone a month ago and was worried about how much data i would use, i use the maps app daily for drives of up to 200 miles, i have been new user curious and install/uninstalled all sorts of stuff. i have had a look at the you tube app a few times etc. I am not really interested in streaming video as i have a real nice TV and watching anything on a 4 inch screen isnt my idea of great.

after a month i have used 194mb of data, i was expecting a lot more.

Yepp - If only there was such a thing as unilmited Internet! It seems easier to find the Holy Grail these days. :(

Yeah agree that said you probably won't get through 1gb if your using WiFi at home but if you can get the 3gb booster or even better just get a contract with somebody else Vodafone give 1.5 mb speeds as standard and Orange give you 1.9mb so I hear maybe a myth.but it still better than t mobile will give. if you go for the 1gb cap

Thanks! Yet more reassurance. Obviously the proof will be in the pudding, but I am feeling more reassured that

yes it updates friend stream and facebook contacts.

there isn't a facebook indicator icon but there is a generic sync icon.
