Question To Those Apple Users Not Owning Android

Just an open question really. I see quite a lot of this here. The question is:

Why do I see lots of members that have an iPhone (and no android phone) on this forum?

If you are one of them care to answer? Is it you are thinking about moving to android or something?

Btw anyone turning this into a flamefest will have their posts removed, and action taken, considering I've just made it clear it won't be tolerated.

Because it's an open and public forum, why not? :D

What should be more concerning is how many discussions here degrade into the following format, when I attempt to participate in them:

"ifail sux because it broke when dropped roflcakes" - Random person

"Actually, any phone dropped has the chance of breaking..ectect" - Me

"ur jus another dum brainwashed ifail ifanboy lololol" - Random person

It's really pathetic, the sheer number of members who conduct themselves in the above fashion. But it reveals that many members here either deeply resent or have a seething hatred towards Apple users, like myself, who are guilty of nothing more than preferring one brand name over another.

That's all.

I don't really see a large number of users on here acting in that way, although it happens, but that sort of thing is certainly not limited to users of Android phones.

It does beg the question of why you are here though. I don't buy many products based on brand alone. I judge them on their individual merits, although there are certainly brands I trust more than others. I don't own any Apple products, not because I dislike the brand, but because when weighing up the price versus what they offer and what alternatives there are, I have yet to be swayed into buying anything from Apple, but I don't browse or join Apple forums to see what owners of Apple products are saying about Android, Windows or whatever products I may own.

Some people may be swayed by fanboyism, tribalism, cognitive dissonance, conformation bias or whatever, but I don't see the point. I have no "seething hatred" towards anyone, certainly not people who buy a phone that doesn't run the same operating system as the one I own and I wouldn't want to browse an Apple forum just to see those kind of people talking shit about Android. It seems like a huge waste of time.

I think that people who are trolling non-Android phones should be warned and the threads should be locked, but it still leaves me wondering why you are here.

I've seen numerous cases of this happening, and that's just towards me. I try to be unbiased with both Android and iOS, but when I mention the downsides of Android, I'm attacked and called a fanboy. This contrasts with Apple fanboys however. Most radical Android fans run on optimism, which isn't a bad thing, but does make them over sensitive.

I joined these forums because I wanted to discuss the Captivate. Now I'm staying because I not only like the community, but because the evolution of Android is extremely interesting to me.

I've seen a ton less "Android sucks" posts here than "iOS sucks" at Apple forums. As I've mentioned before (and certainly not singling you out) many die hard Android fans are overly sensitive when it comes to giving Android a list of constructive criticism, and thus they label it as trolling. Then again, the old internet proverb "Different opinion? TROLL!" is true on any forum :D

I can't speak for the guy you initially replied to, but this is one Apple fan's response to your question. Hope that helps :)

I'm pretty sure it is. There can be other reasons, but this one is valid.
"Just because I can" is valid, although I doubt that there are many people out there that join forums just because they can as that makes them essentially as mindless as a spambot. If you join just because you can, why add the name of a competitor's phone to your profile and why respond to this thread at all? That negates Alieno's explanation.

@Intervenient - As much as I appreciate your response, it's unnecessary. I was only addressing my question to a person who gave their reason for joining this forum as "because it's a public and open forum, so why not?". That is NEVER the only reason.

I'm here because I'm a fan of Android and it's openness and when my iPhone contract runs out next summer, I WILL be ditching Apple and moving on to something else. And unless MeeGo turns out to be kick-ass, or something else comes along, I'll be moving to Android. I have my iPhone jailbroken and modded to hell and back, and the jailbreak itself takes quite a while to recover from and get it set up to how you want it, while my friend with a DInc can do the same things, and more, so much easier. That, and I just really don't like how Apple does business. When I was looking for my first smartphone last summer, I looked at everything out there at the time, and the iPhone 3Gs met everything I wanted. Android was still in version 1.5 or 1.6, and just wasn't there yet, and while the Palm Pre looked like nice hardware, the apps and stuff for it was sorely lacking. But since then, Android has grown by leaps and bounds, while Apple has made some small improvements that other phones already had (folders, "multitasking", front facing camera, camera flash) and then tried to make everyone think it was another "revolutionary gamechanger." It may have been before (even then, it was more marketing than reality), but with Android handsets doing what they are doing, it isn't anything special anymore, and it even has glaring flaws from them trying to rush too much newness into it. Frankly, I may not even make it to next summer, especially if I can get a sweet deal by switching to Verizon or Sprint. I know I can sell my 3Gs for a decent price (jailbroken on 3.1.3, SHSH blobs on Cydia all the way from to 3.0 to 4.0, unlocked, old baseband and bootrom, good stuff), so if I get a new phone now, I can sell this thing for enough to cover the Android handset and my ETF. Score! But no rush, so I'm waiting to see what's coming out next. But I gotta admit, the Samsung Captivate is looking mighty tasty! Dang, am I still typing? Sorry for the Wall of Words, but you asked!

I was an iPhone user, switched to Android, and now probably switching back to the iPhone 4. Just a personal preference really, but I'm still a big fan of Android and the community and would definitely like to stay a part of it, even if I don't own an Android phone.

thanks, i can understand that at least.

Because it's an open and public forum, why not? :D

I can't understand this though? Surely you want to join a forum where you have an interest, i wouldn't join a forum, and invest my time there just because i can. This seems like you are just trying to avoid my question..

Another answer, thanks :)

I'm about to delete a load of posts above this one, like i said, I don't want this to turn into a "which is the better device, I just want to understand certain peoples reasons for being here.

I've been a longtime lurker, but thought I'd chime in here. I have an iPhone 3G now, but I am eagerly looking forward to switching to Android when my contract runs out (at the end of this month). When I got my iPhone, I simply thought that it was the best phone out there, at the time. This was in August of 2008 (a few months before the T-Mobile G1 I believe...correct me if I'm wrong). It did take me a long time to swallow my pride and decide to get an iPhone (as I had always leaning towards the anti-Apple side before that). But looking back, after the (almost) two years, I still think I made the right decision then...that being said, there are still plenty of things that I hate about my iPhone.

I hate how even though the iTunes app store has so many apps, most of them are either completely pointless or copies of already existing apps. I hate that Apple is and probably always will be the only company to manufacture iPhone devices, as it means that when I switch, I'm going to lose all the apps I did pay for. I'm not particularly impressed with the iPhone 4, so because I don't want the hardware, I'll lose the software that I paid for. I like on Android, that after two years are up, I'll have a multitude of phones to choose out of. If I don't like one company's hardware, I'll just look into a different company. I really hate having iTunes installed on my computer, just sucking up resources while doing absolutely nothing of real value (especially because ever since updating to iOS4, my iPhone 3G hasn't synced properly anyway). Finally, even though it's a bit superficial of me, I hate being grouped together with all the people who buy Apple products just for the sake of it. Some of my non-tech savvy friends who didn't know my usual anti-Apple stance were absolutely astonished that I am planning on switching. They really unable to fathom that I wouldn't want to get the iPhone 4, as they are all drooling over it...even though none of them could tell me what made it different from the iPhone 3GS or the 3G aside from that "it looks nicer" and "it's probably faster"....and I couldn't stand that they thought I was one of them. I like to think of myself as a "power user" for most things technology related...and even though I'm probably the only one judging, I feel like I can't be that when locked into Apple (even with jailbreaking).

Sorry for the long rant. I'm just really excited about throwing my 3G up on eBay and making the switch to Android. Sorry to any iPhone users that I may have offended...I really did think it was a good phone...I just think that there are (many) better ones out there.

I don't need to use or own a Droid phone to have an interest in them.

it seems to me you arent very "interested" in android. maybe that was the original reason you joined, but I don't think that's the reason we keep seeing your posts. It seems like you are much more interested in starting some kind of conflict or argument any time you see the word apple in a post. Just from looking at your previous posts i can see thats ALL you ever discuss. Nothing about features of android, questions to previous apple users who switched, nothing at all that would make it seem like you are even remotely interested in making a switch. This is just my opinion and all, but I think you are doing nothing more than trolling... just my two cents :D

The last thing I want on these forums is an argument or a conflict, I would like to see rational and level headed discussions. Instead of this kind of nonsense: "IF IPHONE OWNERS DIED NO ONE WOULD CARE" or "ifail suxxors lol u r brainwashed" ect ect. You know, the kind of nonsense you would expect to see from an 11 year old. The sad thing is that I've received an AVALANCHE of mindless responses (and PM's) like that, and despite the fact that I -never- conduct myself like that or engage in name calling or anything of the sort, I am still erroneously called the troll.

Here's pretty much how it goes:

Me: "Actually, Apple's marketing is no different than any other major corporation and it shouldn't come as a surprise that they will vehemently defend their products."

Reply: "LOL UR AN IDIOT, IFAIL IS FOR !@$%#$ AND YOU ARE A MONKEY FOR BELIEVING THE LIES. WHAT U CHUG THE KOOL-AIDE?? HAHA GO MAKE LOVE TO STEVE JOBS U TROLL"

And I'm called the troll? Yeah, I think not.

Al, u seem to be a trouble maker to me. i'm not around enough to give you specifics but you irked me when you implied something about handicapped folk.

i get it. we get it. you don't need to stick up for the sheep, kool aiders, elite or whatever you think we all conjure up when we think of iphone. yes its out there and it goes both ways too, but why stir up emotions?

This isn't an iphone forum, its an android forum. So when the majority of your posts are defending Apple's archaic system, and putting down all else, how can you not expect backlash? Furthermore, a quick review of your post history will sow you haven't always been so leveled headed or "nice" yourself, so who are you to throw the first stone?

If one or a few of us trolled an apple/ios forum/website, I'm pretty sure we'd expect backlash and conflict, as any persn with common sense would.

So unless you lack common sense, you do expect conflict and backlash judging from your post history and demeanor, ergo, your here to start trouble because you know that's exactly what's going to happen.

Alieno.....

Really....the threads I seen u in that I posted in.....those responses are few, if at all. Its not like EVERY response is like u mentioned.

Actually....some folks responded to u civilized and u seem to ignore them .....and focus on other folks...

Maybe it was like that in the beginning when u first joined or I missed some stuff, I cant speak about PM's....but what u describe I havent seen alot of lately in threads.

And if u do get an avalanche of responses like that....then why subject yourself to it....if u dont have to......?

i like how you always quote the most extreme responses you can conjure up.... the fact of the matter is if you were here TRULY because you're interested in android you would be more focused on discussing android features not defending the iphone. Like IOWA mentioned, how can you not expect backlash in an android forum when the only input you offer is iphone vs. android banter. Seriously why are you still here? you're OBVIOUSLY not switching from iphone anytime soon, nor do you seem to have any inclination to do so, so your membership here seems moot to me

Exactly, it would be like going to a Yankees fan forum as a Red Soxs fan and only posting when something came up about the Soxs...

On topic tho, I visit some iphone forums, I don't really post much input just read on certain features and how they are working out.. I really don't have any interest in getting an iphone ever, I just like to see how the iphone is evolving. AND I always stay out of the Android iphone fights, its not worth it.. esp since both choices work well.. its really just preference.
