I want to get the Froyo update when it is release by HTC not someone on the Internet. I would need to unroot to do this correct? I could care less about losing data. I can get it all back. I do want Android 2.2 on my phone. The "real" version of it.

Once I do update to Android 2.2 can I then reroot using the Unrevoked tool?

Thanks for your help!!

Yes, your phone has to be unrooted (if you're rooted), in order to get OTA from VRW. But, it was said before, if you applied the OTA from VRW, you may not be able to re-root until a new root method comes out.

I'm guessing it wouldn't take very long for the devs to figure out to root android 2.2. I really do want the update so chances are when VZW does release the update I will unroot, apply the update, and then go with a phone without root for a while.

How about you? Is your phone rooted? What is your plan as far as the Froyo update is concerned?

According to the folks over at XDA, based on the EVO 2.2 update, all their exploits to root have been patched so you may not be able to root after the official 2.2 update.

Yes, my phone is rooted and has been running Froyo for a while now. The current ROM that I'm using is almost perfect, its got everything and stable, so I don't plan to update it when VRW does come out with the OTA.

I will just sit back and wait for the devs to work their magic, then I'll decide. :)

I'm rooted and currently running the leaked 2.2 (which I'm loving, despite the minor inconveniences that the bugs cause). I had never planned on accepting the official OTA because I like the freedoms beeing rooted grants me and don't want to chance losing that.

Which ROM are you running? Like I said, I'm running the Leaked 2.2 with most of the VZW bloat removed.

Can you list out some of the bugs?

Here are some of the ones that I've experienced;

1) Occasionally the phone will not connect to the data network upon boot.
Usually this is fixed by toggling airplane mode on and off.

2) Wireless tether does not work in AP mode
Had to revert to the AD Hoc apk

3) Swype will occasionally die where it can only be used in tap mode
Usually switching to the stock keyboard then back fixes that

4) G-Mail corruption
Fixed with the G-Mail apk from the EVO 2.2

5) Market not recognizing the fingerprint
Fixed by Adrynalyne by making it give a EVO 2.2 fingerprint

Other than that, I've not had any major issues. It flies - I average mid 1200s on Quadrant and consistently get 35 - 40 Mflop scores on linpack.

If you like Sense, give it a try, there are also a couple of modified ROMS by Adrynalyne:

and

I do not see any of those issues with the most recent leak of Froyo with Sense fully working. I installed, and was able to root instantly. I have 2.2 Froyo rooted and everything works perfectly.

EDIT: This is the ROM that is working perfectly http://androidforums.com/roms-incredible/134868-rom-leaked-stock-2-2-sense-everything-works.html

EDIT2: I installed the leaked radio update as well, as the directions on that page show. Everything works perfectly, it truly is an upgrade :)

I thought you could install the OTA from VZW if you're rooted on stock 2.1 without the leaked ota radio update but once you installed VZW offical OTA you would lose root until a new exploit was found (if ever).

I currently dont have any issues or bugs with android 2.1... it wouldnt be worth it to me personally to deal with all those things.... would seem more like a downgrade if its going to cause me to get pissed

That's the ROM I'm currently running minus most of the VZW bloat.

Can you list some of the freedoms?

Since I have had root I think the only thing I've used, other than Titanium Backup, is ShootMe. Maybe I'm just not using my phone right.

P.S. - I'm not even being an ass, I'm honestly asking.

The biggest one for me is the ability to modify the phone. For example, trying new roms and kernels, removing those nasty bloatware apps VZW forces on us, etc. It is less about the root only apps and more about getting into the inner workings of the phone. This is one of the reasons I prefer Linux to Windows (too bad the rest of my family doesn't agree) on my computers.

I prefer Windows, but I've got Ubuntu installed on the PC next to me. That is beside the point, though.

Have you changed your cache sizes or locations? Have you fooled with memory management on the phone? What inner workings are you getting in to? Sure I moved some of the junk I don't use (Skype, Amazon MP3, Stocks), but it was just stuff that I ignored before and without utilizing any of the extra space... what was the point? None of that stuff ran most of the time anyway.

Again, I'm not being an ass. I have read several of your post and you are quite helpful and seem fairly knowledgeable. I was hoping you could expand on that a little. If you'd like you could PM me, so that we don't railroad this thread.

I rooted my 2.1 Droid X. My battery isn't bad but not running as good as I would like. Could this be caused by Rooting or just my usage of the phone? If I bring it back to VZW I need to Unroot it for them to look at the battery right?

Please let me know

Can't speak to the Droid X as I only have the Incredible. My experience has been that the battery life on my phone decreased after I rooted, but it was like when I first got the phone. I was using it much more heavily, thus draining the battery faster.

As far a taking the phone back to VZW - my understanding is that once you rooted, you voided your warranty. VZW is under no obligation to give you support or honor any warranty should your activity be discovered. One never knows how good the CSR or Tech one ends up dealing with is so if it was me, I'd revert to stock.

well wireless tethering is a big deal for me because I live in the finished attic of my house and have been too lazy to run some cat5 up there so I wouldn't have internet in my room if it wasn't for verizon's awesome 3G network and the wireless tethering abilities of my phone.

also, I watch a T.V. show called Bleach on my phone which is only possible with the flash 10.1 apk which only works with froyo.

overclocking your processor while you're using it and way underclocking it when the screen is off is also a nice advantage of a rooted phone.

then of course there's all the root only apps in the market.

root explorer is pretty awesome. opens up your phone like a computer. you can access all the folders and all the files move them delete them rename them.
