Joining the "Droid Army"

Okay... right off, I know the post title is punny - but I had to go for it...

Anyways - my wife comes to me and prefaces our conversation asking how much the data plan is for my phone. This leads me to the shocking revelation from her that she wants to try one!

Over the summer she has been doing a lot of e-bay-ing in her free time and she frequently calls her mom to look stuff up on the computer, but if she had a droid she could look it up her self, so she thinks she'd like to try one, so can we get her an Eris. Uh-oh... sorry honey... OH WAIT!! /insert evil giggling....

YOU ARE due for a free upgrade... so how about we do this: I use your upgrade and you take my Eris? Oh, yeah, that's fine, we can do that!

HELLO DROID X!! Yep - been in love with that monster since I saw it in the Verizon Store demo kiosk. Now, in about 2 weeks I'll be moving up to a big screen Droid experience. I'm going to miss the UI that I have, but I think I can cope .

I think I'm feeling evil for this - but has anyone else moved on from the Eris to something else? What am I going to be losing by upgrading to the Moto line?

Congrats on the upgrade! I too have had some serious "X" lust after playing with their demo model at a verizon booth. I was actually thinking of starting a thread about what people miss if they've moved onto a different phone or what they think they will miss about the eris when they switch phones. I'm assuming there will be a lot of "absolutely nothing" or "i certainly won't miss the lag", etc. I personally will miss the smart dialer function where you can type in a contact's name on the number pad. I'm also a (rare?) fan of the Sense UI, but those re-sizable widgets on the Droid X look pretty sweet. This is my first smart phone so it's amazing having a GPS and internet on my phone. With my next phone I might be hesitant to buy a phone with any special UI due to the delays they cause receiving updates. Anybody else gonna miss anything about their Eris?

Sense UI is about all you are losing, and thats not that big of a deal... I haven't used sense in 4 months

I will say that I for one will miss the dialer that was predictive, and maybe the looks of the little guy, other than that, not much else I can think of. At least the dialer on the droid (although not predictive) actually works.lol

I moved from the Eris to the Incredible so I did not miss anything... Exact same situation with my wife getting my old Eris. Within a week of her getting my eris, it started to have some force close issues. I knew a Factory Reset wld do the trick but I took it into verizon. They replaced her phone on the spot with a new one (not a refurb). That was best case scenario because she could no longer give me a guilt trip for using her upgrade and giving her a used phone.

I'm very torn on this issue... I've been very lucky with my Eris. I love the look, the feel, the size and it was my first smartphone so I still think it's the best thing ever. Besides minor issues like lag, etc I've had no issues.
Of couse it would be great to have a faster, brighter, newer phone, but I really don't know if I would like the feel of the newer phones out there. The all look so big and flashy and unnessesary. I doubt they would fit in my jeans and my cell phone pocket in my purse... haha...
And I still torment my iPhone-toting co-worker with things my DROID can do that his can't. I don't need the latest and greatest to do that .
But of course there will be new phones out in the near future that might tempt me, I'm sure of that. I really, really wish they could make an Eris 2. OMG. I would pay full retail for one of those, fo sho.

I don't mean to burst your bubble or anything but I heard that the Droid X was un-rootable and any attempts would certainly brick it. Might want to browse around the X forums before taking the plunge, at least I would anyways.

It's rootable, but you can't flash custom ROMs on to it. Not sure if the same applies for kernels. But if not, you can overclock it and still be fine with it. I find ROMs to be a waste of time anyway, save for a virgin 2.2 from CM. Then just OC it.

But, to my knowledge, you can't do this on the Droid X or the upcoming D2.

Our business got 2 Droid X, one of which was for my brother which he did not like as a replacement for his iphone, so I took it and tried it for a couple days to play with before sending it back since I really thought I wanted one to replace my current eris. No question it was quicker than my eris and the screen size is really nice but after a couple of days I was just not that excited about replacing my eris with it. I am going to wait and check out the Samsung Fascinate as I played with one of those in Best buy (the Captivate) and loved the slightly smaller screen and overall size than the X as I like to just carry my phone in my pocket and not in a case and like the way it fit in my hand...the screen display was spectacular and like the X the phone was very fast compared to the eris....don't know much about samsung phones though....

Try Dialer One it does the predictive dialing too.
