So I have the latest 2.1 firmware installed on my Hero with the latest anti-root update (unfortunately). I am fed up with the lag and slowness of my phone and want to do something about it. Well I dont know ANYTHING about root, I need some help.

Basically, I want to keep the stock 2.1 Sense UI, except with overclocked CPU, and some stock bloatware apps removed. I dont want custom ROMs. Is this possible? If so, can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

You'll need to run the RUU to get back to the 2.1 from before the update. You will have to set everything up on your phone again, except your contacts, as long as they are "Google" contacts.

See this for details:Read post #1 and #2. http://androidforums.com/all-things...2-1-rooted-do-not-install-6-4-ota-update.html

Then, I would suggest this rom.

[ROM] Sprint 2.27.651.6 STOCK Deoxed w/A2SD 2.7.5_pf4a |7/31/2010| - xda-developers

This is basically Sprint 2.1 (with the update), but rooted. It has a very good reputation.

[GUIDE] How to Root Sprint 2.1 Release for CDMA Hero - xda-developers

I think this one page has just about everything you need to know on it, good luck.

Hmm that does look very helpful, thanks. But where can I find what to do after I root? Like how to remove bloatware apps, overclock the CPU, etc? Thanks in advance and sorry for my ignorance...

That ROM does look very nice, but I'd much rather just stay with the original stock 2.1 Sense UI if possible. Can I stay with it and just overclock the CPU and remove bloatware apps? Is that possible? Thanks

You do know there are stickies at the top here right :) ? If you look through the guide/faq, you will find a link to how to remove sprint bloatware, etc. I would suggest you do some research and reading :)

As for OC'n the Stock kernel, not really gonna happen if I recall correctly.

Yes, I did look over the stickies above as well as the threads at the XDA forums. But they didnt answer my questions, so I started a new thread.

Where can I get info for how to flash a custom ROM? I am thinking about "Sprint 2.27.651.6 STOCK Deoxed" because it looks closest to the stock Sense UI. And how does flashing custom ROM's work, is it like hard-resetting your phone each time you load a custom ROM where you have to recustomize everything? If so, wouldn't it be a little difficult for those who flash like every ROM just to try it out? Does it have to do with what's called a "Nandroid backup", which I am also unfamiliar with? The above "Custom ROM" sticky doesnt explain that, just discusses about the different custom ROMs that are available.

And also, how do I go about overclocking after installing that ROM?

Nevermind. I watched some quick videos on YouTube about rooting 2.1 Sprint Hero, and it cleared a lot up about rooting and custom ROMs. Now I have just a couple of more questions that I would appreciate if someone helps me out with:

1) My contacts are phone contacts, not Google contacts. If I backup my contacts onto my computer via HTC Sync, can I transfer them back onto my custom ROM via HTC sync as well?

2) If I do a Nandroid backup before I load the custom ROM, will I be able to reload the Nandroid backup and basically return to the stock 2.1 SenseUI ROM with all my previous settings to get what I had before I flashed the custom ROM?

3) If I ever decide to get rid of all custom ROM/rootness, can I just run the original official 2.1 RUU and get my phone back to what it was before all rooting?

Thanks!

Yes I feel like I'm quickly getting the hang of it! Which I wouldn't be able to do with out yall's help!

But just a few more questions...

1) How do we flash in extra things on top of custom roms (i.e. custom lockscreens, etc) that don't originally come with the custom ROM? Do you just flash it the same way you flash a custom ROM and it get's applied over the current ROM?
2) Whenever a ROM developer updates their ROM (i.e. to fix a previous bug or issue) how do you apply that updated ROM? Do you just have to trash your previous ROM and flash the updated one like your applying a brand new custom ROM? Or is there a different technique to add just the new updates and changes?

Again, thanks so much you guys!

1- yes, you'd generally just flash these on top of the rom unless the dev says otherwise so just make sure to read everything about it first.

2- when some roms get updated to a new version you can just flash it over the old one without wiping which wont erase any user info. Though this is OK sometimes, its still always best to do a full wipe, data and dalvik, before doing this to get the cleanest possible flash and avoid bugs.

If you have a custom ROM, do a full wipe, then never load a new ROM, what happens when you just load the phone up normally? Are you just given the stock UI that comes with the phone?

On a side note, the main issue that compelled me to really consider rooting was the SMS keyboard lag while texting. It has gotten REALLY irritating. Is there a specific effective way to target this problem? Will overclocked ROMs fix this?
