Tingling sensation when touching my Desire if plugged in but not charging...

Anyone else noticed this!!

Running my finger along the side of the case I noticed a weird sensation that at first I though was the finish on the casing, but it registered as more than that, so I unplugged it and it went away!

Have since discovered that the sensation is only present when plugged in, but NOT charging - i.e. power light is GREEN.

I would definitely contact either HTC or the company you got the phone from. Better to be safe than electrocute yourself

^What he said. Don't take any risks if you suspect the product is faulty, and something definitely isn't right there.

I've got a new one since though so I'll let you know if it's the same.

I'm no expert, but maybe it's something to do with the way the device discards the electricity when the battery is fully charged to prevent overcharging?

Haven't noticed this on my Desire, I'll try it in the morning!

I too had this tingling issue, but it only happened with an after market charger brought from the Orange store, exchanged the charger and it still did it. Contacted Orange to see if phone needed to be returned but they said as it didn't happen with the official HTC charger problem must be a charger fault. Tried charger in a friends Desire and his worked fine....since then the charger has been fine with mine too.....Another Desire mystery !!!

Mine does it too but at 5v I'm not to worried about electrocuting myself

Mine does this using the charger supplied with my Desire. It is more noticeable along the top edge than anywhere else.

Yep mine has done it too, but not with the charger, mine happened when I plugged in a 3.5 mini jack in to my stereo. Its very small but can definitely feel it. Its because the brown part of the casing is made from metal so conducts ever so slightly, it doesnt seem to be a problem tho.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but that 'tingling' is the electricity supply earthing itself through you! It means the electricity in your house isn't earthed properly - I would get an electrician in straight away (or try a different plug socket?)

I know, because this happened to me last November. I was getting tingles from my laptop, and various other things in the house.

I agree with the suggestion to get your earthing tested. However, there IS another possibility bearing in mind that the chargers are "switched-mode" power supplies. It is possible to get residual voltages passed through to the low voltage side if there is a capacitor involved in the earth line smoothing. It's very poor design but it can happen. The voltage may be high but the current is minute, but enough to tingle.

Check with an electronics expert if your house wiring is confirmed OK.

I'm sure that can happen butGiven the number of people affected and that it still does it when charging from my laptop running on battery I'm gonna say unlikely in this case.

New wiring and new certificate issued, so its unlikely to be faulty house wiring...it also did it at my place of work....a fire station, once again brand new re-wire just completed.
Its probably a minor earth within the phone, but like my provider, Orange, its worth letting them know in case a fault develops later....

It's theoretically possible the transformer in the phone is inducing a small current in the metal case. Or it would be if it was AC, but it's DC by the time it gets to the phone, and I don't know much about DC transformers - But from what little I know of switched-mode transformers, at least some use induction circuits. So again, it's theoretically possible.

I first noticed this when I got it last year, but I've only just re-acknowledged this and it's interesting to see it's a normal occurence. I imagine like one guy said it's because the phone is earthing itself through you. This will be normal as you will see there is no conductive earth pin on the charger plug so it wouldn't be anything to do with a bad earth in your home electrical setup. My theory is this current is caused from leakage inside the phone to the chassis as all the innards are so tightly packed in there is going to be some transfer. The reason they probably don't earth the phone via the socket is probably because it would inhibit the phones radio transmission capability.
