Tips for a first time HTC Evo user

Sorry if this is a useless thread.
Im gonna get my HTC Evo tonight and I was wondering if you all could kinda just give me a "what to do" type of thing.

Stuff such as battery life, setting home screen, where to get apps and what apps to get, what accessories to buy, or other things you think might help me. I've never before used android or even a smartphone so this is kinda a big jump for me.

Biggest and best tip in my opinion is to set up your contacts as google contacts. This will sync them with your gmail account. The advantage of this is that if you get a new android phone or have to do a factory reset on your current phone you will still have all of your contacts!

For starters do the update to 2.2 Froyo.

To do this Hit the Physical Menu Button -> Settings -> System Updates then hit "HTC Software Update". It should find it. Depending if your in a 4G area or not this can take some time. Its roughly 85Mb in size.

I did it via 3G and it took 5 or 6 min to download.
Wifi is roughly a minute and 4G is around the 1 min to 2 min mark or so I hear.

The actual installation will take anywhere from 10 min like myself or 45 mintues like others. Its very inconsistent with the times people are getting for the update. But trust me when i say its well worth it. It makes it much snappier.

Let it download and install. During this time your phone will be unusable. It sucks because its the shiny new toy but let it be. Otherwise you risk breaking it.


After the install is complete Go back into the System updates area and update your profile then update PRL.

This will add another 2 to 3 minutes to do.

Once those 3 things are done the EVO is yours to toy with.

Just like the rest of us that got our new Evo we went to the market and just started downloading and taking recommendations on Apps.

Some are great tools, others are novelty apps that once you use them youll delete them.

Also, I recommend searching for "AppBrain" on the market. This is very similar to the market but whats nice is it will back up all your apps that you did have on your phone just in case you break it or it gets lost or stole you wont need to remember what you did and didnt have.

After a week or 2 and you get the apps you like and the set up you prefer i recommend getting Mybackup Pro. Its 5 dollars in the market but it will back up your entire phone on the web or onto your SD card. This way if your phone breaks/ lost/ stolen and you get a replacement it will not take forever to get everything back.

There you have it. Its a ton to read but thats what i would do.

So how do I do this? I set as google contacts on the actual handset? Because I'm only 17 years old so I have a lot more contacts than emails, and I don't know if there is a way to like sync facebook, numbers, and emails all together?

Okay, about how long would you say it would take an above average but not expert computer user to master the evo?

welcome and thanks for joining the forum.

the best thing for your to do is read the Sticky threads and read over your owners manual to get a feel of the handset and what it can do.

there has been a new 2.2 update and your phone does not yet have this update. you can read up on it to see if you want to take advantage of it or hold off until later.. choice is yours and your phone will work great either way.

there is a lot of info out on this device. if you feel overwhelmed, then by all means send me a PM and i will help you get the info you need.
