Alright guys i am a new android user and i love my evo so far. I am really trying to get into this thing but it seems liek there really sin't a lot of good info for new users. I have 2.2 as i downloaded it this morning and it is running really good. I am looking to root so that i can use wifi tether along with some over clocking to begin with. Then once i learn more and more i will try other things. Can anyone point me in the right direction or give me some directions here. Is wifi tethering even possible on 2.2 yet? thanks for the help guys

Unfortunately, since you got 2.2 already you can not root. Someday you will be able to, but no one knows when. For now, use your non-rooted time to read :) There is amazing info, and the teams developing things are impressive too. Enjoy your phone.

So:
Overclocking=no.
Wifi tethering=call Sprint and add the option to your account.

the ability to "upload" ROMs is an ability of a rooted phone. Once you are rooted, you can flash anything you want, including a ROM that takes away your root powers (in case you need to take advantage of your warranty).

Currently, the methods to root your phone only exist for Android 2.1. No one has figured out to break into a 2.2 OS, but like others have said, it's just a matter of time.

im new to the root thing also. i have just upgraded to 2.2 version .3 and wanted to be able to root and get some extra features like teh 30fps break and wifi hotspot

would i need to do this
HTC OTA Froyo 2.2, *FINAL*, build 3.36.651.6 (Rooted) Odexed - xda-developers

it says its for 2.2 unless im reading it wrong

Yeah, this is confusing for a lot of people. The ROM is stock, and it's been modified so that it is rooted. But unless you are ALREADY rooted, you can't flash ROMs. And since you are already on 2.2, there's no method yet to break into your phone to get root access.

So how would someone flash the rooted 2.2 stock rom? They root while they are on the stock 2.1 build. There are known ways to break into a 2.1 build to get root access (unrevoked, simpleroot, toast's method, etc). Once rooted, you can flash the rooted 2.2 stock rom. This option is not available for you, unfortunately because you are already on a stock 2.2.

But I'm sure someone will figure out how to exploit 2.2, since a lot of people are now on the OTA 2.2, and I'd imagine that soon, new Evos fresh out of stores will come with 2.2 already installed, so there will be a demand for a 2.2 root exploit.

Absolutely well presented.
