Help High standby data usage "solution"

Hi,
I've noticed a few people have complained about high standby data usage.. ie when you leave the phone on a desk, with nothing streaming, you still manage to use up 1-2mb per hour (as I was!). This is a big problem for people moving from something like a blackberry where it was hard to use up a lot of data even if you tried.

I tried disabling as much as possible to see what was causing the problem (NetSentry was great for tracking usage but of course can't tell you which programs/services are using it up), and after exhausting all ideas I tried deleting the two non-GMail email accounts I had. On was set up as push Exchange, and the other a 15-minute polling POP account. I have to assume it was the Exchange that was the problem, but I can't be sure. In any case, my usage dropped from about 4MB over 3 hours to about 12kB for the last 3 hours since I disabled the accounts.

In conclusion, email can be more of a problem than you think! I'm going to forward my other accounts through my GMail to see if that works better.

It should work better ... I'm able to transfer roughly 100 MB per month with sync turned on and some mild Google maps usage. I'm only using one Gmail account with calendar and contact sync.

I'm guessing the exchange account doesn't only download headers and downloads the whole message so that could be the problem. I don't really know since I don't use any exchange accounts.

BTW, APNdroid might help you limit the data usage. When you don't need data transfer simply disable it with this free app.

how are you checking your data useage? I have found that it differs a lot depending on what app i am using ( still trying to decide which is more reliable).

i know the dogwatch one was really bad....pretty much tells me i used 30 mb in 3 days or something

net counter gave me a number of around 20

and data counter widget said something around 10 mb

Ha, guess I'm not talking to too many Canadians on here :)

My plan (voice/data combo) is $50 CDN (32 GBP) including 500MB. An upgrade to 1GB from 500MB is $15 CDN (9.75 GBP).

I've been using NetSentry to watch my data usage which lines up perfectly with what I'm seeing on telusmobility.com in my account. An interesting note for those in Canada, the online billing system uses Greenwich Mean Time, so it rolls over to the next day at 7:00PM EST.

theres a map on wind's site that shows the area it covers..its actually not bad.. it covers pretty much all the major cities. and the phone still works if its not in the covered area..you just dont get your 'unlimited whatever'.

but even thenn..wind only supports the1700 mhz band..which isnt all that popular with the good phones out nowadays.

I'm using the SIM Toolkit that comes with my SIM card. I can simply select an option from the menu and my service provider texts me the statistics for call and data usage (roaming and native).
I also get the statistics for each call and data transfer made at the end of each month.

Just out of curosity, what kind of data plans are you guys on? On a high usage month, how much data do you guys use?

I'm on a basic data plan SiMobil (Vodafone for Slovenia)... unlimited free calls and text + 100 MB free data usage.
I usually search for free WiFi points when I'm not at home and rarely use other types of transfer. When I must I switch on APN and surf away.

EDIT: I forgot ... the above costs me 10

Hi All,

I'm experiencing extremely high data usage 20+ MB per day after I installed Froyo. Before my daily max was 6 MB.

Has anyone experienced this behavior?

Can you suggest a data monitoring app that tells me data usage app by app? I have watchdog, and Netcounter and Netmonitor, but they are general, and cant tell me what app is doing all the mischief.

I have an unrooted HTC Desire with OTA Froyo

Here are my apps:

kozjegyzo's Apps on the HTC Desire

I live in Hungary and unlimited plans have been abolished years ago, so I'm stuck with a caped one (500MB) that gets very expensive if I overrun.

All help would be appreciated greatly...

Thanks

Geee, you Canadians pay a lot for data plans!

...ya, but we get free health care to even it out:D

...I'm also a sad Telus/Canuck on the same 500Mb plan as most of you. I'm finding it's making me paranoid and constantly stressed out worrying about my usage. I downloaded The Weather Network app 'cause I thought it'd be cool, but later erased it...draining too much data for the amount I was actually using it.

I started a "Telus Milestone Users" group on Facebook. Join up, and we can bitch on there as well:rolleyes:

Luckily i don't have to worry about data anymore

400 minutes
Unlimited text
Voicemail + Caller id
6 gb Data ( In Canada )
Evenings And Weekends After 9pm
Price = 90.80 $

I avg about 30 - 40 mb per day. On a day where i go somewhere and im bored i normally use about 100 - 150 because i watch alot of youtube. If i leave my phone alone for a day it usually uses 2 - 3 mb from Twitter, Facebook and Gmail sync
