* Multiple New Hero Copy & Paste Questions! *

All:

I've already read all the copy & paste threads, and nothing addresses my questions, so here we go....

Background:

I'm having a TON of problems with copy and paste, and have had it from day one on my Hero. I can long-press and bring up the copy and paste menus, but selecting text properly is a BITCH AND A HALF. I can almost never get the press-and-drag method of highlighting text to work well.

Also, the trackball-controlled arrow BARELY moves a pixel or two if I try using the arrow selection method.

In contrast, the cut/copy-and-paste features on my g/f's Droid Incredible on Verizon are AMAZINGLY cool and easy! On the Incredible, you simply slide around these large, and obvious start and end markers to easily select ANY text you want. It even magnifies the text while you're selecting it. Then it has a little pop-up horizontal Android icon menu to let you look up the text's definition, search Wikipedia for it, or even share it using the standard Android share button.

It's SO easy and cool I want to steal my g/f's phone and leave a note with my Hero in its place...LOL.

So here are My Questions:

1. Is anybody else having the problem with the trackball arrow cut-and-paste method? Is the text selection arrow moving properly for ANYONE using the trackball??

2. Is there an app or add-on for BETTER copy and paste to make the Hero work like cut/copy-and-paste works on the Droid Incredible as I describe above? Is that an Android 2.1 or 2.2 thing? Why don't we have that on the Hero with 2.1??? Is it a Verizon customization or did HTC just make ti better on the Incredible that on the Hero as part of Sense?

Yes, it's tough, unless you are using Swype, which makes selecting/copying/cutting text quite easy.

Hmm...I thought Swype was just used during text entry. Does it have decent cut/copy/paste functionality from any app? Can you long press to bring it up within anything?

In fact...how do you even GET Swype for the Hero??? I don't think it's available unless you try getting on to a rooted phone somehow??

You can get it from here. I don't think you need to be rooted to get it.

Yes, Swype is only useful when you can edit a field. I use it all the time in emails and getting pieces of URLs.

No, you don't need to be rooted, you just have to sign up from Swype's webpage.

Not finding it man...all I see on their web page are details about how to use it on the devices it already comes with. If you try to register for the beta testing for new devices, it says the "beta testing" is CLOSED to new users....

Don't know if this helps but here is what I do when I want to C&P some text, type in a phrase in your text box, then at the end of the phrase, roll the track ball to the left as if you want to skip the last 2 words of that phrase, then long press the track ball and scroll to select text and hit the trackball again, then scroll your track ball to the left until you have all you want to be highlighted, then hit the trackball again and hit copy, and then the rest you know what to do from there. If this is not what you were looking for than sorry and ignore this post, hope that helped

This makes sense, but another facet of my problem is that my trackball doesn't seem to work properly when the phone is in C&P mode....the arrow/cursor just sits there and doesn't move! Maybe a pixel or two at most....something's wrong.

Any ideas anyone? Has anyone yet found a way to adjust the trackball sensitivity??

Go to a Sprint repair store and they will replace the trackball, they did on my first Hero

I'll give it a shot...

Question, though....the trackball seems to work fine in other applications/uses. It's ONLY during copy and paste that it basically takes 1000 rolls to move two pixels. Does that change your mind? ;O)

By the way, I did some Googling and found a possible Copy/Paste alternative for people running ROOTED phones (sigh...I'm not a rooter). It's called "Copy Paste It":

OK, so I took it in to the Sprint repair location in Silver Spring, MD today. I showed the "check in guy" the issue and he wrote it up correctly on the receipt. They told me to come back in two hours...

....two hours later...

I pick up the phone and they say "it's fixed" then I try it and there's NO DIFFERENCE. Cursor not moving in response to trackball more than a pixel or two during text copy. The tech left a note on the slip saying "...you're supposed to use your fingers to copy text...just do that..."

So I asked to talk with the tech and had to show him the problem personally and explain how it's SUPPOSED to work. I tried to show them on another phone, but the only Hero they had ALSO had the same issue...sigh. It sounded like they didn't even BOTHER trying to fix it, but the manager claims the tech misspoke and that they DID change it. Yeah, right.

Again...am I crazy here? Aren't the white arrow and vertical line supposed to move smoothly with the trackball during text copy if you don't want to use the finger method??

Am I the only one having this problem where the cursor moves about ONE PIXEL for every thousand spins on the trackball??

I tried this on two Heros at two different Sprint retail stores and it seemed to work fine on THOSE units.

Did something happen in 2.1 that messed this up?

Also, now that I think of it, is there supposed to be a white arrow cursor if one moves the trackball around on any internet page? It just occurs to me that I've never seen one....moving the trackball while on a web page just jumps from link to link, highlighting each one with a green border in turn.

Yes it has always done that once on the web page, if you in the browser and use the scroll it does not do that, only once the page has opened

Does which? SHOWS the cursor or just jumps from green-bordered link to green-bordered link? I'm not sure which you meant...

In any case, I NEVER see an arrow or cursor on my Hero except when I'm in a copy and paste operation...and even then, it doesn't move at all. Just changes to a vertical selection line if I click the trackball.

IE: If I open up Opera, then click on a bookmark, and open the page, then use my tracker ball I get the arrow curser, and anywhere I scroll the tracker ball over any link the links highlight

Ah...ok. Nope...I definitely never see the cursor the way I'm supposed to...never really have since day one.

When's the Galaxy/Epic arriving on Sprint?

Sigh...
