Samsung vibrant native email problems

I am trying to find an email app to meet my VERY simple requirements. So far I have found email on Androids to be awful and I mean awful. I am coming from a Blackberry and can't believe how truly terrible the email apps (or should I say header readers) are on Android.

No, I am not bashing Android. I love Android and EVERYTHING else on an Android is FAR better than my Blackberry.

Anyway, most the email apps (including k9 and maildroid) on Android are not email apps at all but email header readers that don't download a copy of the email to your phone, instead just showing you a list of email headers that when you click on them THEN downloads the email. This is horribly inefficient.

So my very simple needs are this:

1. an app that downloads a copy of the entire emails so that it is available as soon as you click on it in the inbox.

2. the ability to edit replies.

The native email on the Vibrant seems to do the first since once it shows the email in the inbox it is instantly available when you click on it.

BUT, there appears to be no way to edit replies. You can't get the cursor in the quoted text or get the keyboard to appear so as far as I can tell you can edit replies.

Has anyone found a way to edit replies on the Vibrant? Of course, the Gmail app has the same glaring problem.

A few comments. MailDroid supports editing the reply, but as you said I download only the headers. You may find this as an issue, but there are many users who would rather only download the mail when clicked on (you can't make everyone happy). K9 I believe as the other user posted here does the download of the email and the headers. It is a key difference between our applications.

I know that compared to my Cliq, the Vibrant sucks at email retrieval. I have mine set to scan every 10 minutes and it still doesn't push them through. No question about it, Blackberry was the king at email but it falls so short of everything that the iphone/android can do. I agree 100 % that email sucks for android though

Have you tried any of the third party apps? MailDroid or K9?

You're totally right! I had a CLIQ up until about 2 weeks ago when I upgraded to the Vibrant. I've been so disappointed by the default email program on the Vibrant. The one on my CLIQ was amazing. I have found that MailDroid is the best app for my phone. It has great features and the developers seem to really want their app to be a success. I definitely see this app being the most commonly used mail client on Android devices in the future.

The only thing that the cliq did extremely well was the email. It almost remided me of my blackberry with how great it worked but I am def going to give maildroid a try

Make everyone happy? You mean by coding a simple choice for users to decide if they want the header or the full email downloaded?

I think the vast majority of people would prefer not to have to wait for the email they have just clicked on.

I have tried K9 on several different occasions now and never found a setting to download the email. Even worse it was horribly buggy and had to update even the headers every time you went back to the inbox and sometimes it lost ones you had just seen in there. Very unprofessional product.

Like I said, my needs are VERY simple. So if your product can not even do the simple things I need, who are you making your product for? Yourself and your own needs?

By the way, in this forum we can't see each others faces but if we were sitting together you would see that I am conversational, not confrontational. It is just that I really wonder why not one email program can do very basic email need. Have integrated mail (inbox, sent and trash), push email (which all do thankfully), allow editing of replies and a choice to download headers or full email.

By the way, another thing you need to work on with your app is that it does not notify you of mail with a sound when the screen is not on. Perhaps this is a bug in the way it works on the Vibrant but if not it's a serious flaw since no sound alerts when your not looking at the phone makes them useless when you are. I would have to go pick up the phone and unlock the screen just to get the message that I have email.

Are you sure K9 doesn't download the emails? Right now I can view any email in my inbox and my wifi/3g is off so the entire email is already stored on my phone since my last sync.

Until deciding it was too buggy on my phone, I had tried k9 several times and not once was I able to find a way to download the entire email. If you know how, I would love to hear it and I could try downloading it again to see if I can get it working since that would bypass some of the bugs I was experiencing which had to do with reloading headers which it often lost.

Never tried it but Im going to give it a try fo sho...Thanks

One thing that can be said about Maildroid is that the developer is VERY active with both the product and those who use it. To see a developer come to a forum and offer general email advice is very impressive to me.

Unfortunately, there is not integrated mail (not even just the inbox) so with 8 accounts it makes dealing with mail mind numbing. And as I've stated, it only downloads heads so you have to wait for every single email to download. If you deal with a lot of email each day, this is again mind numbingly frustrating. If those two were solved it would be a pretty powerful app and easily the best one out there. Oh, and sound notifications that you have mail without having to pick up and unlock the phone.
