Which Apps install on SD card?

Is there a way to tell if an app will install on the SD card before downloading?

I am running out of memory (internal) on my Droid. I was very happy to learn that with 2.2, we would be able to store apps on the SD card. I was very unhappy to find out that very few apps are configured to be stored on the SD card. Is there a way (without rooting) to force apps to the SD card? ...or to be able to have them downloaded directly to the SD card when installed?

Go to Manage Apps in the usual place where you would normally uninstall an app, and click on an app. If the App can successfully be moved, you should see an option at the top of the screen that says move to SD Card. On the other hand, it will be grayed out if the App can not be moved.

One other tip I can suggest would be not to turn on auto updates for apps just yet so you can see as they update and get them moved over. I wish google earth would goto SDCard that frickin app is 22MB. Didn't know about the install direct to SD lets hope some other devs take that idea and run with it.

Download the free SDMove application from the Market.

It will identify all applications you have installed that can be moved to the SD card.

Older applications need to be updated by the developers to support to be installed to the SD card, so if you see any applications not listed in SDMove, that means that it's not compatible to move.

Titanium backup is a free app that lets you force move almost any app to the sd card, although it might require that your phone is rooted can't remember.

Well, without rooting, no, but there is a setting that can be used if you're rooted.

Download the free SDMove application from the Market.

It will identify all applications you have installed that can be moved to the SD card.

Older applications need to be updated by the developers to support to be installed to the SD card, so if you see any applications not listed in SDMove, that means that it's not compatible to move.

Excellent news. I wonder if we can also export the list so we can all start reporting what can and cannot be moved to other folks?

I know 5-8 apps recently that all of a sudden support Apps2SD that did not before have been updated in the last couple of weeks...

Yes, but that can cause massive problems if you just go willy-nilly and start moving apps to the SDCard.

I a,lso cannoot find this app i.e. SDMove. Titanium Backup requires rooring and that may make warranty on my phone void.

As for rooting voiding your warranty, if you ever need warranty service, you can always flash back to stock, using http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-droid/136508-guide-all-things-root-related.html

Load TiBu. At the top click the Backup/Restore button. Pick an app you want to force to the SDCard and long press it. Enjoy the menu that pops up.

BTW, if you are considering moving apps to the SDCard when they do not natively support it, you really need to read this:

App Install Location | Android Developers

Another thing - if you are going to force apps to the SDCard, do one at a time and reboot every time

Otherwise you may put your phone into a boot loop / FC loop and not be able to do anything with it.

As always, make a current Nandroid backup before starting anything like this.
