Don't you think its pretty sad that some people find the need to apologize for asking a question on a forum? why did it get to the point where this has to happen?

Let me explain... It seems that on any forum community the people are quite hostile toward reposted questions. and now some people always think they have to apologize before they ask a question. It seems like almost every post says "Sorry if this is a repost... I did a search and didnt find anything..." Or "I looked it up on google but..."

I hate it when people post a response like " this was already answered in another thread" or "a simple google search would have helped you...". Do you ever stop to think that some people would rather get help from an actual person rather than an article? maybe they did look it up but ran into an issue along the way... Do you ever stop to think that that is what a forum is for... People to come together and help eachother...

I think its sad that people are so reluctant to help eachother and that people have to apologize when they need help...

Any way that's just one of my pet peeves. Sorry if this was already discussed...

Fortunately, here at AF the administrators and moderators are proactive when it comes to unwelcoming behavior by forum regulars (or anybody) toward newer members:

It can be an ongoing thing, and little fires need to be put out now and then (just use the report button

on the lower left of the posting area to alert staff to such posts).

yes that's one of my favorite things about this forum. And the majority of the people here are quite helpful! but I still see " sorry" posts here...

There needs to be a balance between tolerating repeat questions, and calling out people who don't bother to search. This board seems to strike a pretty good balance.

On some boards if somebody asks a question that was brought up one time 3 years ago in an obscure sub-forum, they'll get their head bitten off. What's even worse is that searching quickly becomes a waste of time there. Any search for a topic will return 5 pages of threads with nothing but "search noob, it's already been answered" but you'll never find the actual post that got answered.

On the other hand, some boards I go to have at times had 3 threads with the exact same question on the first page of that forum... I'm all for answering questions even if it's been answered before, but when a Google search using a copy/paste of the question being asked gives you a dozen links with the right answer, that's not right either...

That happens here from time to time.

I think that many users, old and n00b, do not pay attention to the box above the text field, which, once the new topic title is typed in and the user puts the cursor in the posting area to begin the first post, shows topic titles of threads with similar words as the one being started.

That feature is meant to lead the user to those other threads rather than begin yet another one, if the ones shown are in fact very close.
